HD4870 on install...

Hey.

Firstly I'd like to apologise if this has been covered before, I did a quick search while at college and couldn't find an answer to my question...

Basically my motherboard is an abit fatal1ty fp-in1, which is reported to be compatable with Kalyway 10.5.2, which I downloaded at college today.

I've had 10.5.1 for months and had never got it to work, and I had given up on the OSx86 scene due to the countless hours I spent getting my complex HDD configuration working again to boot into Windows Vista/7.

With 10.5.1 I managed to track down the issue to the nForce 650i chipset, anyway since 10.5.2 is reported to work I decided to try it out.

However, my graphics card is a HD4870 (I used to have a x1950pro), and reading the forum and wiki articles I've learnt that the card isn't "compatable", although there are fixes which are to be run after install.

The problem there is that, my motherboard doesn't have an onboard display socket, which means I have no choice but to install using the HD4870.

Everything I've read so far refers to getting the card working after install, and I don't have an alternate card to use for install.

The question that I have is, will my HD4870 allow Kalyway 10.5.2 to install fine without causing problems, or is there anything I can slipstream into the ISO to get it working for install?

Many thanks,

Rob Jackson.

You should be able to install Kalyway without choosing any graphical drivers during install and then (after updating to 10.5.6) install Netkas drivers for HD4870. I have been able to do it with my HD4850 installing iDeneb and also Retail (both 10.5.6) but haven't tried with Kalyway simply 'cause I didn't wanted to wait for updates to download. As far as I recall Netkas drivers will not work on less than 10.5.5.

EDIT: When there are no drivers loaded for graphic card, OSX uses the card in VESA mode, both for installation or operation. Therefore, graphic card should create no problems during installation. You would simply have no graphic acceleration.

Thanks for replying, I had just tried it and it has installed fine. ;)

Now I have been met with another issue, due to how my PC was originally setup, my BCD is on my IDE drive, and my Windows 7 is on my SATA drive, along with my OSX partition.

The problem then is, I cannot get the OSX to boot from my BCD, I presumed that the darwin bootloader was installed onto my SATA drive, so if I skip the IDE drive and go straight onto my SATA drive I get a message about a HFS+ Parition Error.

I have no clue how I should go about booting my new found hackintosh, help would be much appreciated.

Try setting your SATA drive as primary boot drive to see if you can get to Darwin or boot into OSX. Also check operating mode of your SATA controller. As far as I know newer Leo versions only work if SATA controller is set to AHCI mode. I'm not sure if that is a case with 10.5.2 (if you have installed Kalyway as you have planed). Check your BIOS settings for SATA controller and try changing it to AHCI.

One warning: To be able to use your SATA drive in Vista/7 in AHCI mode you have to install appropriate AHCI controller driver. Therefore, before changing SATA controller to AHCI first boot into Vista and/or 7 and install AHCI driver and reboot after driver installation, with controller set to AHCI, to verify Windows Vista/7 booting. If everything goes OK try to boot into OSX.
