as device support is often contingent on support for the chipset on the device, why not organize items so that they can be merged together through linked lists by the chipsets they contain. The current system of treating devices like motherboards, or laptops(which currently have no designated space, another glaring omission) which are made up of several components which have varying support and single component devices like expansion cards and USB devices is a severe limitation of the database. Some distinction must be made here. I understand the need for the less technicaly inclined to be able to compare a box in the store with an item in the database. My proposal can be built on top of the curent system by simply cross-refrencing current database items with a new category of components.

 

Why have 10 pages and differing instructions for the 10 different branded wireless cards that all use the same broadcom chipset when you can have a single page that lists every brand that makes a card using the chipset and have one set of instructions to get any of the cards working. A Jmicron raid controller will work the same if it is attached to a motherboard, on a pci card, or embedded in a laptop expansion card. Any cases where support differs will be exceptions to the rule and can easily be taken care of through addiotional device notes.
