Aver also announced a ATSC/QAM version of the Volar Max/Mac tuner a week later for North American and other TV markets. The hardware itself is generally identical in appearance to Hauppauge's HVR 800 and 900 (and ElGato's earlier EyeTV Hybrid) and likely based on the same OEM hardware and rather generic USB/tuner/decoder chipsets.

 

So that only leaves the AVer TV forMac PVR software to distinguish the Volar hybrid tuner for OSX. See this Apple-Mac TV Tuner Blog for some screenshots of AverMedia's TV tuner product and software pics.

 

It's tough to see how AverMedia can even begin to compete against ElGato's Eye TV and Equinux's TheTube DVR programs which are already mature programs. Maybe there is room for a 3rd player in the Mac's ever-increasing market-share growth - but without big sales numbers, the software will never get the investment and resources to become a really great Mac app.
