Core Duo

I had heard rumors that Apple wasn't going to support the Core Duo like from the original Intel Mac Mini or the original MacBook Pro (which I have). Well I tested it and it works just fine. I don't notice any problems at all. Of course, I just got it running not even 15 minutes ago, so I haven't put it through the ringer, but it's working great.

That would make more sense if it is. Even more when I just read this post in the "Is leopard a real 64bit OS?" topic.

AFAIK Leopard kernel boots up standardly in 32-bit mode.

It enables EM64T as a kind of extension (if possible with CPU...).

Snow Leopard on the other hand has an mach_kernel Universal Binary which also contains x86_64...

So from the boot up it is fully 64-bit...

I was curious about the Core Duos. Glad to see those aren't completely left in the dust. We have a tonne of them at my work. We may not move to Snow Leopard right away but you know how demanding designers can be :-)

I don't think core duos are 32bit only. My pentium dual-core is basically a core duo and it supports 64bit

Well.. i think you guys are complicating a simple matter! If your processor can understand 64 bit instructions (has em64t/x86_64), it can run Snow in 64 bit mode. If not, it will run it in 32 bit. Simple :P

I'm not a experienced computer user but, afaik all Intel processors newer than Pentium D (including) understand 64 bit instructions.

That's all i can post about Snow on this site, as i'm not a Mac user... :)

yeah.. i believe you Embio. I know that there are exceptions, just don't know who they are.

One thing i was sure.. someone would correct me ;)

Just to clear up confusion here, all of the CD and C2D line of processors are full 64bit architectures. Run fine in -x32 and -x64 bit versions of snow. Working quite well too

Stop the bickering -_-

Core Duo's in that first "Select Processor" drop down list do not have the EM64T option, neither do Core Solo's, nor Core 2 Solo's.

Very useful utility..

For more reference specifically on EM64T.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64

Definitive proof.. Embio is correct.
