Upgrading HD - cannot clone from old drive properly

I bought myself a nice 320gb hard drive as an upgrade for my MSI Wind Hackintosh. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to do the clone and they do appear to be the same (based on file size of each drive) but when I put the new hard drive into the machine it does not boot. It shows the MSI screen (where you get the opportunity to go into BIOS settings etc) but then the screen goes black with a flashing underline cursor.

I have tried wiping the new drive using disk utility, partitioning it as GUID and also as Master Boot Record before running a clone operation on to the new drive, but neither type seems to work.

I would think that a few others have done a similar thing upgrading the HD, so I'd like to know whether

1) I'm not doing the clone operation properly

2) I need to tinker with some master boot record in some other way

I did wonder if I should try doing a backup (create a disk image) using Disk Utility running off the Kalyway install disk and then restoring from that instead. Would this take care of any very low level settings, e.g. MBR settings, or do I still need to go in and manually hack at something?

Your help will be greatly appreciated :-)

I had to reinstall PCEFI_V9 on the target drive after the clone is finished

Erm, I'm afraid I have no idea what that means or how I do it! My install was along the lines of Kalyway 10.5.2 plus successive OS updates, but do not remember applying anything matching this ...

Can you point me in the direction of a how-to? Thanks for the reply on this, anyway - at least it suggests there's light at the end of the tunnel :-)
