I just bought a Zotac 9300-ITX WiFi from Newegg a few days ago, and in finally came in the mail today

I originally bought it for a Vista HTPC, to replace my Atom build, but now that I'm looking into it, it looks like it might make a nice Hackintosh

Chipset/Video: MCP7A/nVidia 9300

Ethernet: It seems to be an nVidia ethernet. I Googled the Vendor and Device ID (10DE:0AB0), and it looks like it's the same as the new Macbooks

Audio: 10EC:0662, which seems to be ALC883. Did a forum search, and it seems to be working with 10.5.6

WiFi: I see nothing about it being compatable. It's based on VIA's VT6656. The source is available here, but I doubt anyone would go through the trouble of making it work

Esentially it's like all the other 9300/9400 boards that are out, only half the size :)

Anyone else buying or looking at this board? I was planning on waiting for the new Chameleon before I put OS X on it, that way I have time to figure out exactly what I need to make it work perfectly. That being said, if any of you are interested, and want me to try something on my board before you buy it, let me know, and I'll test it out

I was also looking at this board but I'm not well-versed enough in the art-of-hack to make a call on it. I'd really be amped if they can get it working though. It has a lot going for it, esata port, nvidia 9300 graphics and 8 gigs of ram on a m-itx board

I'm thinking quad core cube :thumbsup_anim:

would work fine, take a look @ the gigabyte and asus threads based on the mcp79/730i chipset.

i'm actually thinking of picking up this board and putting it into another mac G4 cube.

altho im waiting for the xfx version.

That Lian Li PC Q7 case is pretty slick looking. In all honesty if you priced everything legitimately, the Mac Mini is priced extremely competitively. I do wish 2GB came as standard for the $599 one.

- Extremely small form factor

- Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHZ

- Nvidia 9400m Graphics

- Mac OS X Leopard

- iLife 09

- Airport Extreme Wireless N

- Bluetooth

- Gigabit Ethernet

- Mini Display Port & Mini DVI

- Analog/Digital Out

- Firewire 800

You can't build a machine with those specs and size for the same price. If you could build it for a similar price you'd be coming really close to $600. Plus you can upgrade the ram yourself and save some cash, no biggie. Also, I think it'd be hard to build a machine similar to this in size that looks as good. Good luck finding a PC case that looks as sleek as a Mac Mini. It won't happen.

Sure, if you try making the smallest system possible, and matching the exact components of the Mac Mini, you might come close to 600, but why do that? Can you even do that? I'm not so sure they even sell Core 2 Duos at 2GHz anymore, haha. Besides, if you're going to spend 600 dollars, go above and beyond what the Mac Mini offers

This is just a quick throw together of stuff on Newegg. I'm sure if you shopped around, you could find something better/cheaper

Motherboard - Zotac 9300-ITX: 145

Case: Aopen S135 (from Amazon): 88

CPU - E7400: 120

HDD - WD 250GB: 40

Optical - LITE-ON Slim 8X DVD Burner: 40

Memory - Patriot 2GB: 19

OS X/iLife/iWork Box Set (from eBay, new): 115

Total: 567

Bonus if you bring your own parts to the party like me (The only thing I bought, was the mobo), or already have an OS X license

I'm sure you can add in Bluetooth and WiFi for around 30 bucks. Plus, if you don't care about using the smallest components, you can use a slightly larger case that takes a full size DVD-ROM instead of slim, and you'll save yourself about 50 bucks. Put that towards the processsor and RAM, and you can get a nice quad core/4GB system that would crush the Mac Mini. The only thing you're really missing, is a firewire port, which isn't much. You do gain HDMI/VGA/Optical/Coaxial/eSATA ports with the Zotac, which the Mac Mini doesn't have, and you get a bonus copy of iWork :)

That just confirms my point. Apple has a very specific product here that a OSx86 build can't touch. Like you said, once you start adding Wifi, Bluetooth and even FW800(400), this system can't be had for less than $600. Even after spending what you said above, you still have hours of fiddling to get it to work properly. Also I'd rather have a mini display port and min dvi than the display ports on the Zotac. Also the Mini has Optical out via the same stereo port.

I agree though, yes for $600 you could build a quad core rig in an ugly case.

Sure you can, just not with the components I listed. I just made it a point to keep the price the same as the base Mac Mini. You can get a smaller HDD, less RAM, and a slower CPU and lose a hundred dollars.

All of Apple's computers are like that. The iMac and the Mac Mini use mobile parts, and the Mac Pro uses server parts. There just isn't a market for manufacturers to sell similar components to PC builders. It's pretty much always going to be the case, until Apple offers a mid-sized tower system

...in an ugly case.

Well now we're getting into opinions. I would rather be able to use my own case than Apple's. I'm not a fan of white. I'm sad they got rid of the "Blackbook"

@ DiaboliK

Would it be possible to give specific link(s) info on the mcp79/730i chipset links?

I am having trouble with the search function on this forum even though I am signed in ... Have nForce 730i chipset MOBO on pc I built running 10.5.6 and your NVKush and runs great. Also have used your Converter Page for the Vista Registry verbs ... thanks for great work ...

Still only getting Azalia audio to work on this system in spite of trying 'hundreds' of methods of getting full AppleHDA working with more input output options ...

this board has the same memory mapping problems as the gigabyte 730i mobo has, so if you are wanting to run >2Gb you may want to get a different mobo.

Well {censored}.

It would still make a real nice HTPC though.

Thanks @DiaboliK

BTW ... on the 730i Have you been able to get AppleHDA Audio to work or are you aware of a method that has ?

what about HDMI and/or SPDIF out ? (Have nForce 730i Mobo, 9300 etc. Supposedly ALC888 audio from linux dump codec etc. and from Vista run on same MOBO)

The only way that works for me (audio) is Azalia, the usual, only HD line out working

try and use the frodokenny applehda.kext in the asus 730i thread i linked to earlier (the udfah tutorial is what you want)

that enables line out and digital out, as for hdmi audio thats on its own codec thru an nvidia chip so that is still being worked on.

Thanks, read both threads last night ... for quite a long long time ....

planning to try you suggestion re frodokenny applehda.kext, dl'd it last pm while reading ... sounds promising

:):) IT WORKS IT WORKS ..... DIGITAL OUT ONLY .... ON SPDIF (COAXIAL REAR CONNECTOR, NOT ON OPTICAL CONNECTOR ON MY SYSTEM ... SEE JUST BELOW ... I GUESS THEY REALLY ARE THE 'SAME' DATA BEING SPLIT AND SENT OFF TO EITHER OPTICAL OUT OR COAX OUT on my Nforce 730i MOBO ....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE: THANK YOU DIABOLIK, FRODOKENNY FIX YOU SUGGESTED WORKS .... DIGITAL AUDIO OUT, ONLY

THIS IS GREAT FIRST TIME ON THE 730i THAT i get this to work.

this written AFTER all stuff below, but leaving in just in case someone may have use or other thoughts/comments on info below or on Vista Registry info from my NForce 730i 9300 MOBO ..

line out, mic in (front) do not work with frodokenny fix on this system, but Digital Out is best so far (only thing worked in past was Azalia THANKS THANKS THANKS ... Great work guys ..

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a Vista (and also linux dump) pinconfig registry hive saved which has '2 sections' 0000 and 0007 with pinconfigs etc. for verb generation, and have used YOUR pastbin page several times with the 0007 (888 codec )

The other Verbs.... fewer verbs ... is for the 0000 segment .... does that imply that is for the HDMI 'Hardware' level portion (I guess the 'INTERNAL' codec ...) on the 730i???

see this link to a series of posts - with data if you wish ... for Vista REgistry Hive

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...0941&st=140 actually post 147 or

see below in codebox ....

Would this set of verbs be required also TO GET HDMI working . or just the longer set (for the 888 with identical end verbs to the Manual method of converting a CODEC to a verb list ..) ???

Should one have to try BOTH sets of VERBS SOMEWHERE in the plist files? What about addresses, should the addresses of BOTH THE alc888/1200 codec as well as the hardware address of the HDMI both be patched in somewhere?

My mobo BIOS also has the Enable EXT, Enable INT, or Enable BOTH, or Disable BOTH in the Audio device enable/desable settings

Have tried both ways different number of sound assertion errors at bootup in -v mode or in logs

Have posted a lot of questions and gotten a lot of suggestions in tmongkol's thread on the 889 ...

Thanks for your help ...

My problem is that I get good listing in System Profiler, with manual or using your pastebin and Vista Verbs from same system, and get audio 'POP's only when I click on the Sound slider, or when I empty the trash, etc. but no 'real audio. no matter what I do. Have tried both the line out rear, the headphone front, and SPDIF Coaxial out (canot try the optical out on MOBO) BUT no luck ...

What is funny, even when I 'plug in' a headphone in the front connector, if I do this while I am looking at the Output panel (tab 2) in System config, Audio segment, the name of the output changes from Speaker to Headphone or something like that, and when I remove it goes back to the default name. So the autosensing function is working

I have tried so many different codec versions, manual, pastebin portions, addresses in the fields in the plist files, etc. etc. that it is not funny...

try and use the frodokenny applehda.kext in the asus 730i thread i linked to earlier (the udfah tutorial is what you want)

that enables line out and digital out, as for hdmi audio thats on its own codec thru an nvidia chip so that is still being worked on.

DiaboliK,

I have this new Zotac 9300 ITX board. I followed Ufdah's guide for the Asus P5N7A-VM exactly (except I used a retail 10.5.6). I used the 2-core DSDT you provided for the Asus (I have an Intel E2140 - does that matter?). AHCI is on, USB is set to low-speed. But no go. It freezes early during bootup every time. Safe mode doesn't work either. Both just stop at this point:

I have installed iPC 10.5.6 on it successfully, but couldn't get QE/CI or the audio to work, even with the frodokenny fix.

Any tips? Thanks!

you are NOT supposed to use the asus dsdt on this!!!

you must create a fixed dsdt for this board, you cannot mix and match dsdt's cause obviously it wont work.

Based on the Zotac and review photos it looked like that WiFi was just connected to a USB header as it was using a wire going to the header, not a slot. There's a version of the board without WiFi and it's a usb header in that location as well. They could have two versions of the board but doubt it.

This board shares the same award bios as the Gigabyte E7AUM-DS2H which is why I passed it over. Sleep issue with Ethernet/Audio and the >2Gig of ram issue should be expected.
