What chip to buy? - PPC to Intel transition

OK, I have a comparison question for those of you who migrated from PPC to Intel.

I use a Power Mac G5 1.8GHz DP (rev. 2) as my main machine. I have 3GHz RAM and use it for photo editing, light video editing and some webpage work. Personal, not work.

My brother has a DualCore 2 1.8GHz on his windows PC. I do notice it is slower when making a DVD out of a Divx file. He thinks a bump up to a 2.2 would be at least equivalent power. Please suggest options.

When I choose a mobo (no $ yet) I will be looking at something which can use a faster chip later but would be ok with something equivalent to begin with. My use would be to make a replacement machine to be readly for end of PPC support :(

I want to know how much my CPU expense might be, in case a suitable mobo at a good price is mentioned in a forum thread.

thanks

Intel Core 2 Duo's are faster per ghz than G5's. A cheap Pentium dual core E5200 @ 2.5ghz ($60)

should be significantly faster than a 1.8ghz Dual G5. They overclock really amazingly well too.

It's a great time to be a consumer.

There are many motherboards which work well with OS X, check the Wiki & the Forum. I can recommend some for you if you like. You can then upgrade it to a Quad core later for a speed boost. Price range is $50-$120.

What end of support? Leopard should work well & be supported for a long time to come still. Almost all the applications will be universal, only a few will be Intel only. The main reason to switch to Intel should be a speed boost.

--Great to know the switch would be a good speed boost, since I want to build a replacement machine and not a 2nd " hobby machine ". I will have to wait on a recommendation untill I actually have the money at least for the motherboard & CPU. This way I can get timely recommendations of what is available.

--Bad wording on my part  . I meant to say that my G5's speed is being left behind for some of the newer apps. I feel it makes more sense to go ahead and do a chip switch and not just upgrade my G5 with the last of the G5 quads. The new iLife has some stuff limited to Intel only I believe.

Anyway, thanks for the speed info. I will keep reading the forum while i save up the money.
