Dell BIOS Hacking...Please Help!

I am in need of some extertise with BIOS hacks. I surrently own a Dell Inspiron 6000 w/ x300 video card. I would like to change that card to the x1400 from the Inspiron 6400/E1505. The card physically fits perfectly, but the BIOS of the I6000 does not recognize the x1400.

Is it possible to hack the I6000's BIOS into recognizining the new card? If so, how would I (or someone who knows what they're doing) go about this. This forum seemed to have some very knowledgable people on it, so hopefully I can find an answer here.

Thanks!

Kevin

hi

i'm wondering why the BIOS doesn't accept the x1400 card....

I never had a dell computer but one from HP and I changed the graphic card for several times without any problem.

an other option is to update your BIOS to a newer version...may be the BIOS verion from the other computer...but I thing that wont work.

but with the wrong BIOS update it's possible that you ruin your computer... ;)

best you tell us what definitely happens when the x1400 card is mounted... (doesn't boot, black screen...something like that)

that's sometihing i'd try when I were at your position... :D

sry for my english.. :D it isn't my mother tongue :D

I'm not to sure what you mean by BIOS not recognizing your video card, but assuming you're getting past POST, what does windows recognize the card as? and have you tried updating (if there is any updates) the firmware on the video card? I don't think the computer's BIOS has anything to do with your video card not being recognized.

I'm not entirely sure why the BIOS doesn't recognize the card. I am jsut passing information on from someone else who tested this. From what I understood, the computer would boot fine, there would just be no video output with the x1400. The BIOS for the I6000 was made well before the I6400 was released, but that still doesn't answer why the BIOS isn't recognizing the card.

This is the original thread on this topic if anyone needs to read it...

yeah that doesn' make sense unless dell write the bios to lock out upgrading parts on the motherboard.. they user verified that video card still works on the other computer? you never know. he could have shorted it out.

i know its an ancient thread but..

maybe flash with the bios from the 6400 to get it to work, and make sure the laptops use the same amount of power.. reminds me of people hacking inspiron 9300 to make them XPS machines..

good luck.. and let me know how it goes..

I just tested this. My girlfriend just got a I6400 with the x1400 card and let me give it a shot. Assuming it would work, I didn't do any research for swapping it into my I6000. Like was already said on this thread, it seems to boot, but there's no video output. Just for {censored} and giggles, I tried my X300 in the I6400 and the thing doesn't even POST. I really wish I could upgrade to the better card as it would save me about $1000 in not having to get a new laptop sometime in the next year...

any new info on this?

The suggestions of trying the I6400 BIOS on the I6000 are a bad idea in my opinion, but there's gotta be a way of getting this thing to work.

This is really a great idea. I read the thread over at notebookforums.com and am really hoping that someone can get this to work. It would be nice if Dell would allow their customers to actually upgrade rather than dishing out $1500+ for a new notebook. If anyone has any updates it would be greatly appreciated by myself and many many others.
