How does this setup look?

Hi Guys!

I'm pretty new to the world of OSX86, and I've only been lurking here a little while. Anyway, my Macbook Pro is starting to die and I'm now looking to replace it with a desktop Hackintosh. I've assembled a list of components that I hope will do the job and be compatible, but before I went and dropped the cash on them I thought I would double check with the experts around here to see if this setup looks reasonable. FWIW, I"m in the UK and will be buying all this stuff from Scan next week unless I get any recommendations to the contrary. Ideally I'd like to be able to clock the CPU to 3.0Ghz and have the whole system run fairly quietly.

- Intel Core2Quad Q6600 G0 SLACR

- Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R motherboard

- 4gb Corsair TwinX XMS2 6400 RAM

- 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD

- Gigabyte NX88T512HP NVidia 8800 GT 512mb GPU

- Optiarc AD-7200S-0B sata Optical drive

- Akasa Nero AK-967 CPU cooler

- Antec Sonata Designer 500w Case+PSU

This comes to around £660 including VAT and carriage. Any comments or feedback would be hugely appreciated, including any hints or tips for getting all this stuff working together and advice on what installation method is most likely to yield the best results.

Thanks in advance for your time.

It seems perfect but try changing the CPU to a Q8200 or q8300 if you want to overclock becouse they overclock great and it's going out of sale the q6600 so if it's sold out they are a good choice

Hi, thanks so much for the reply!

I just took a look at the Q8200, and it's almost exactly the same price as the Q6600. While it's based on a 45nm process rather than the 65nm of the Q6600, it does seem to only have half the L2 cache of the 6600. It also has a 7x multiplier compared to the 6600's 9x. I know on paper that makes the 6600 look like the better chip to me, but in practical terms, would you favour the 8200? I can pretty much secure myself a 6600 at the same price, and I'm not wanting to run crazy overclocks (3ghz would be fine for me - of course if I could get more off air while staying relatively quiet that would be ideal!)

Thanks again :)
