Wanted: Buying Advice on Laptop

I just sold my old beloved iBook and I raised enough money at Christmas to sum up about 1000$ for a laptop. I've been in and out over what I've been wanting to buy so far, was looking at netbooks and last few weeks I was looking at powerhouse laptops.

Wondering what might be a good laptop from every class of laptops. Just post your experience with a say, a budget laptop and why you choose that model. Trying to keep some money for other stuff (upgrade my desktop to a q6600), but I can raise money for that later if a 1000$ laptop is what's best.

Netbooks, <600$ laptops, Desktop Replacements, Portables, any kind of 'book.

For me, I was looking at the 900ha for a while, but it has the crappiest OSX86 support out of any of the netbooks. -_- So then UmaClocker hyped me over to the Dell9 and that got me thinking, "{censored} netbooks, if I have to buy a Dell for one that's crazy." So I strapped on my boots and headed over to NewEgg, TigerDirect, Amazon, and a few other sites. Found out that the best laptop for actual performance would probably be something like the System76 Pangolin Performance. The things a beast, it has a 2.16ghz Core2, 320GB HDD, 2GBs RAM, GeForce 9300 with 256MBs DDR, 1680x1050 WSXGA+ 15.4" display... With an 854$ price tag. Comes with Ubuntu 8.10, so I can skip Shista, er, Vista. Appealing. Or I can sacrifice performance and play around with an 8GB SSD on a Dell9 for 207$.

Those both seem the extremes to me. Budget vs Performance. Thinking of bridging something inbetween, but I want to maintain OSX86 support. The Pangolin is good because it runs OSX86 vanilla, just need to purchase a new Wireless card for it. (intel 5100) The Dell9 I would buy a 64GB SSD for and 2GBs of RAM. That pumps the price up to about 350$ or so, before shipping.

Anything in the 400-700$ range is astounding. There is so much {censored} to filter to find something that's OSX86 compatible, and doesn't kill all desire for it. I don't wanna have to run an X3100, I'd rather have the x4500 which isn't supported. That's why I'm posting.
