windows + mac networks

Here's the problem:

I have a network of a couple of windows boxes, nothing special, in particular, they are not on any sort of domain. So, just your plain-vanilla winboxes. In this network, I brought my new macbook pro. On this one, I have enabled windows file sharing, or what's it called. Now:

- from any of the winboxes, I can ping by name any of the other boxes, including the mac.

- from the mac, I can NOT ping the winboxes by name, however, if I do (Finder)->Go->Connect to Server, I can use the winboxes' names allright. In fact, nmblookup works fine.

Of course, I couldn't care less for ping, the problem is when I'm trying to use utilities such as vnc from the macbook, it's a pain in the rear to figure out what the ip is of the box I wanna connect to.

To elliminate this out of the way: yes, tried having the macbook on the same workgroup as some of the winboxes, anyway, even they are not on the same workgroups! So that should not matter.

I've done some investigation, and I think it all has to do with the fact that there is no samba-aware lookupd agent. The only way things might work is if there were a dedicated wins server... but I don't want that. I want the exact kind of behavior you get on a windows box.

Does anyone know anything about this? Worse come to worse, I'll write the goddamn lookupd agent... are there guidelines for doing this, I found none.

Thanks!
