for the first step try install without any geforce kext. if system is boot then try to use gfx-string to activate CI/QE.
of course you must edit whole of geforce kext with you Id card before boot GUI and rebuild extensions cache. you can do it in installation with terminal.

Make sure you don't have the monitor cable connected to VGA port if you've got two connectors on your video card. Connect it to the ADC connector if possible.

you need to use EFI Studio to add your card's info to your com.apple.boot.plist.  I have the same card and this is how I got it working.  You'll have to use the power of google to track down a copy of EFI studio (it won't be hard).

It took me about 12+ hours of trial and error to figure out the exact NVCAP for this and two other cards, and my last two hours have been in the wee hours of the morning, but persistence has paid off well.  All of the instructions on forming NVCAP out there do not take into consideration that there are some poorly designed cards which do not follow standards very well, and 8400 GS seems to be a case in point, because it has a reversed configuration. I think a lot of us, especially those who aren't inclined to use injectors, at least in the beginning, do not seem to understand that the model number DOES NOT matter, because video configuration has everything to do with the sequence of output ports. Of course, this sequence happens to be pretty regular for most of you out there simply due to the popularity of some models from some specific vendors. Anyway, I will stop stuffing into this post and share my details, assuming you already know how to form NVCAP.

N.B.: If you are manually entering NVCAP, you need to get rid of injectors (i.e. NVkush, NVinject, NVDarwin, etc.) and use "vanilla" kexts for Ge* and NVDA* under /System/Library/Extensions folder. There is absolutely no need to modify any of the kexts if you have a right NVCAP value for each of your video cards.

I have PCIe & PCI configuration with (BFG) GeForce 8800 GT OC & (PNY) GeForce 8400 GS, and 8400 has (from bottom up) DVI, S-video (Tv-out), and VGA on top, and it has a device ID of 0x06e4 and BIOS version of 62.98.20.00.51.

NVCAP for 8400 GS was 0400 0000  0000 0c00  0100 0000  0000 000x 0000 0000  (x=0 for PCI, x=7 for PCIe)

This is just wacky, because it's hardwired in reverse from the standard, and that's why so many people are thrown off with this card.

And just for others who may be looking for possible NVCAPs on 8800 GT and 6200:
8800 GT OC (BFG; 62.92.1f.00.65; from bottom up, DVI, DVI, Tv-out)
0400 0000  0000 0300  0c00 0000  0000 000x 0000 0000

6200 (PNY; 05.44.A2.10.51; from bottom up, VGA, DVI, Tv-out)
0400 0000  0000 0900  0600 0000  0000 000x 0000 0000

I've come to be much more aware of that "x" value while playing with multiple card (2) configurations.

Hope this can spare some people much wasted hours.

UPDATE (2/7/09): I just found out that 8400 GS had compatibility issues with this system (Removes Suspend feature, and shutdown doesn't work properly--Acer Aspire M5630 system w/ modified BIOS). Mine MAY be an isolated case, but let me know if it works for you.

UPDATE (2/8/09): Works perfectly with BFG 8400 GS version. The previous one was from PNY.

I have a PNY GeForce 8400 GS VCG8400SXEB 256MB PCIe Idevice id 0x0422) and have been having fits trying to get it to work.. it has the same port order you mention, so maybe that is why.

When you talk about not using any injector where/how are you using the NVCAP value?

EDIT:  I tried editting
GeForce.kext
NVDANV50Hal.kext
NVDAResman.kext

but I get

Quote

NVDANV50HAL  loaded and registered

display: family specific matching fails

Is the 0xfff.. section card specific or just a set of mask bits? (and if so, no harm in setting to 0xffffffff ?)

thanks,
Mike

Not created by me but ima add one extra step. This worked for me! Also on install i did not select any Video graphic drivers!!!! Very important! I only selected Graphics update.

http://www.insanelym...hp/t100912.html

follow link for the parts you need to download.

1) You need to download NVinstaller v41

2) Double click on the NVInstallerV.41.pkg installer package and select:

* Latest kext and framework (90 Mb)
* 256 Mb vanilla (36 kb)
* Netkas 10.5.2 kernel (if you are using patched kernel with your leopard)

3) When installer finish, DONT RESTART, go to /System/Library/Extensions and delete or backup your NVinject.kext.

4) Download this EDITED NVinject.kext:

5) Unzip and copy NVinject.kext in /System/Library/Extensions

6) Open Terminal and type
(you can use Kext Helper too instead of type this commands in terminal)

sudo -s press enter and type your password

Repair NVinject.kext permissions:

chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/NVinject.kext
chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/NVinject.kext

do not close console yet

7) Delete Extensions.mkext from /System/Library

8) type restart into console and save your changes

This worked for me! Also on install i did not select any drivers!!!! Very important!

This should get you back booting properly as well

http://www.infinitem...1756/page3.html

Here's what I want you to do. You're going to delete the video kexts so the system uses a generic driver. Then we will adjust it as necessary later.

I know you didn't install any video drivers/kexts/EFI strings in this latest install but the system still installs its generic variants of them.

boot with -s

Code:
/sbin/mount -uw /
cd /System/Library/Extensions/
rm -Rf GeForce*
rm -Rf NVDA*
rm -Rf ATI*
rm -Rf NVinject*
rm -Rf AppleIntelGMA*
cd ..
rm -Rf Extensions.mkext
rebootnow it should boot normally (not in safe mode) but without proper graphics, this is an issue we will fix shortly. Let me know how it is coming along.
