A complete beginners guide to install Mac OS X on a Sony Vaio SZ7

First of all I will start off with: Thank you Mac Community and Insanely Mac! Different files that I will talk about are all work of others, I am just putting the whole thing together, as I don’t think that everybody should be researching as hard as I was.

Please don’t hold me responsible for any issues you may encounter!

Now my laptop is a Vaio SZ780 Configured:

2.50 Ghz

4 GB Ram DDR2

….

Step 1: Partitioning of the HDD

Well you could select any partitioning program, however know this: all your DATA will be lost, if you don’t back up. I used Disk Utility that came with the Installer Disk.

Make sure one of the Partitions is formatted in HFS+ (Journaled)

Step 2: The Image

Now this step is important. Because the only image to use is Leo4All 10.5.2. I have tried several others, but always the same problem: The Screen goes black as the internal LCD is not recognized.

Step 3: Installation

Ok this process is important as this requires a lot of patience. Seclect continue and then just before it says install hit Customised. Try to select minimal drivers. Keep the DEFAULT kernel that is selected. Don’t select any chipset or Ethernet or Sound Drivers. In fact the only drivers you have to select are the Nvidia ones to make the internal screen work. Select 10.5.2 KEXTs and NvidiaGo. Those two and no more.

Step 4: Errors

Mode: SEEPD

Looking out for errors when the computer reboots. Do that by adding –v to the booting option. Everything should boot up fine.

Step 5: Customize

I know the first issue you will have to deal with is the resolution and there is a really easy way to fix it.

Simply add a <String>"Graphics Mode"="1280x800x60"</String> under Kernel Flags in com.apple.Boot.plist in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

Then go to Disk Utility and repair Permissions. This will fix the issue with resolution in SPEED Mode

Note: Resolutions in Stamina Mode will always be smaller.

Step 6: Various Drivers

How do we get Stamina Mode working? This is very easy. Go to /System/Library/Extensions and delete the IntelGMA* kexts.

Now your able to boot into Stamina mode with 64 MB shared memory but no QE/CI.

Ethernet: I got this working because of a member called Titan and his Kext. Thank You! Simply use kext helper to install the provided kext

IONetworkingFamily.kext.zip

Sound: SigmaTel_STAC9872AK.txt Simply drag it into HDAPATCHER 1.16 and then drag the HDAEnabler.kext into Kext Helper!

Step 7: Important

If you choose to use Nvinject then the internal screen is gone.

You cannot mute the sound entirly!

Step 8: Help Me!

As it took me a while to figure everything out as i am quite new to the scene (7 days). now could you please help me to fined QE/CI support for the X3100? without the screen going all weird. And the Nvidia 8400m gs? anyoen got that working?

Then one more request: anyone got any further with the the Wireless Lan?

Cheers

Hope this guide helps evveryone who wants to install MacOs X on such a beautiful laptop! hehe

I have a VAIO SZ250PC and have successfully installed retail 10.5.4 with Boot-132. The only challenge is the internal LCD doesn't work nor the trackpad on install, so I hooked up to an external LCD and USB keyboard/mouse. You could creat a custom boot-132 with the right kexts, and it would then work fine I assume. AFter install I used EFI v9 + Chameleon as the bootloader.

After install, I have used a modified intel 950 kext, so the resolution works great, as does QE acceleration. Network, sound, battery meter, trackpad (no scrolling) all work great. Also thing I can't get to work is sleep (it doesn't sleep, but doesn't wake back up!). I also updated to stock 10.5.5 with no issues, but 10.5.6 is a disaster that I can't solve! I also don't believe its possible to use the SPEED mode (nvidia 8400) successfully. But who knows!

hello

well i have a question to ask you here,

do you have QE/CI in speed mode?

if so i will try your method.

And i'm also glad to hear that you also be able to use my kext to make your ethernet to work.

And last, for the x3100. I have helped some people via PM already.

It's kinda tricky. But well, it's work.

This is the copy of one of my personal message.

First sorry for my english because I'm not an English native user.

Well get to the point, I grab the X3100 kext somewhere in this forum.

I will find that kext for you at the end of the message. Let talk about how I did this first.

I used Kalyway 10.5.2 to install the system, then after reboot I boot to single user mode to

removed all the kext that associate with X3100.

Then I install Leopard Graphic Update (can be found on Apple Download).

After reboot I boot to single user mode again to remove the same kext as the last time I removed.

Then I download the switchresx control panel to adjust my monitor setting. Well it's not quite done yet.

I used jas 10.5.3 combo update. After reboot I removed the X3100 yet again. Then after it boot up I finally place all

the modified kext to Extensions folder. Do not reboot yet go to switchresx control panel to apply change exactly as the

picture I attached.

Picture1-3.png

Then reboot and you should have a working monitor with QE/CI.

Grab the kext here.

All thanks goes to AJ.Allen.

Regards,

Titan

I think that will do.

And for the trackpad, just go and have a look in tutorial forum. There is a topic about it.

Edit the plist in that topic for the accept threshold for 100. And you will be all fine.

But I have some issues with my trackpad. Sometime it just reverse itself. Effect even in Windows.

But seem like other people doesn't have this issue so I assume that I have a faulty trackpad.

For the wireless, I swap the 4965agn out and put the Broadcom 4321 draft n in.

No need for software modification at all.

All the best,

Titan

Internal Microphone:

I' ve managed to get the internal mic working on my Sony Vaio SZ71XN :D I checked my Linux codec dump manually and found that one node value used by AppleHDAPatcher was wrong. Four nodes are listed for the internal mic. In my config the values were:

8, 9, 21, 12

I changed the last value (12) to 20, rebooted and voila the internal mic worked :)

Trackpad prefpane:

The second thing I noticed was that the trackpad configuration option wasn' t there. After searching the forums I found a simple solution here http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=142466

Nvidia 8400M GS:

Full hardware acceleration works with the 8400M GS using NVinject v0.2.2. Only problem though is that the internal screen stays black. Using a external display (connected before boot) does work however....

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS:

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS

Type: Display

Bus: PCIe

PCIe Lane Width: x16

VRAM (Total): 128 MB

Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

Device ID: 0x0427

Revision ID: 0x00a1

ROM Revision: NVinject 0.2.2

Displays:

Display Connector:

Status: No display connected

AL2016W:

Resolution: 1680 x 1050 @ 60 Hz

Depth: 32-bit Color

Core Image: Hardware Accelerated

Main Display: Yes

Mirror: Off

Online: Yes

Quartz Extreme: Supported

Rotation: Supported

QuartzGL: Supported

Just to tell you guys im trying to get QE/CI working in both speed and stamina modes (btw ive got a Vaio SZ79GN), already working in stamina mode using sony vaio nr160 x3100 drivers and SwitchResX.  going to see if NVKush will enable QE/CI in speed mode (GeForce 8400M GS graphics in my case), then we can just switch graphics on the fly to save battery life.

thebigdog123,

Which Boot 132 disk are you using?

I have a SZ150PC running Kalyway. I seemed to successfully install using my custom Boot 132 disk I created copying extensions from the same SZ. I posted to New modified Boot 132 thread before I saw your post. Link for reference http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1187789

GMA X3100

10.5.7 (iATKOS v7).

1. Installed Leopard without selecting any of the video drivers

2. Booted in safe mode (-x)

3. Adjusted the display timings ( see titans post)

4. Rebooted

No need to install the kexts anymore :)

Download SwitchResX or DisplayConfigX and add a custom timing with the properties from Titans post (see the image). That's all, reboot and enjoy :thumbsup_anim: Haven't found a solution for the powermanagement and batterymeter though. Both the voodoo kexts aren't working for me.

It means that we can now use iATKOS v7 instead of Leo4All 10.5.2 as written in the tutoral ?

You probably could ;) I currently have the following devices working:

Bluetooth

Network ()

Sleep (Out of the box)

Display ( Using the timing mod)

Sound (Microphone and Jack sensing are not working yet)

My Sony (71XN) with BIOS R122S5 didn't have VT and AHCI enabled, but the functionality is there. I've enabled the functions by modding the BIOS. It isn't that difficult to perform :P I'll try to post a quick howto on that subject soon.

This is getting more interesting. I have decided not sticking with leopard any more as it gave me strange fdisk errors, which were pretty awful as I had to reset my whole MBR. This occurred several times, but only after the computer hung up and I had to manually switch it off.

Simply ran too unstable...

how is the 10.5.7? I am thinking of giving it another shot.

another important issue however was the sound, which was distorted and had some issues. did it change?

thanks guys

alright I installed it the new V7 on my sz7,

it is not to difficult to do.

the only packages I would advise you to select

are the first Trackpad Driver, the Intel X3100. the

sound is selected by default so leave it.

however do NOT select the battery manager, because

this will crash your system.

now I have several issues to deal with:

first of all my camera doesn't work, i don't have

any drivers, but it would be cool if someone

gave my instructions on how to fix it.

most important of all, my headphone jack doesn't

work which is annoying!

two-finger scrolling?

the battery indicator. did anyone have success?

apart from the issues above I am overall quite pleased

with the performance of the system. It runs smooth and

is really good to work with.

off topic: before I installed it, I had a dual boot between xp

and windows 7. I decided it would be cool to have mac

and windows 7 on the same machine.

I used disk util to clear my XP hard drive partition and then installed

mac on top of it. My boot loader is Chameleon 2 and W7 is recognized,

but it simply wont boot because it gives me the error message: NTLDR is missing!!

what did I do wrong. Is there some way to fix this MBR issue?

Thanks guys

mm
