Determining how "Definitive" a guide should be for Genius Bar

i put together a guide on how to Manually update to 10.4.6 from a fully working 10.4.5 system, on mostly compatible hardware.

despite a couple of 100% succesful updates using the guide, people are having various issues. i can see those problems being fixed and incorporated in my guide, but at this time it's definitely beta. :D i've had it moved to the PC Forum/OSx86 Installation for now.

eventually, my guide will work 100% on certain configurations.

but here's the thing, though my guide might eventually be "finished" and 100% working for some systems, it may never be broad and inclusive enough for everyone, even with highly similar hardware.

should guides like that be included in the Genius Bar area, my guide in particular?

i should add that i don't want to have to check this guide for the rest of my life, and answer questions. :D

Hmm... Valid point...

But then, how do you know if something works for all hardware or not? How do you know when something will work on Intel's, but not AMD's for instance...

I think that as long as you write a guide, it should have a larger success rate than failure.

Also, if, as you say, your guide only works on certain configurations, you would mention so at the beginning of the guide. That way, you remove the possibility of failure (well, not completely, but it helps...). If, theoretically, it should work on all systems, then you shouldn't do so.

It's a fine line to discuss.

Installing OS X86 on VMWare, should theoretically work on all systems, since the hardware is emulated, so it's all the same. However, this is proven wrong... Many people have problems, whether it be their hardware or their own mistakes...

My conclusion:

I think that the Genius Bar is good as it is. The only problem I have with the Genius Bar is that too many people are posting questions there... No one reads the stickies...

Good thoughts, both of you! quixos, feel free to post whatever you've got in the Genius Bar - even if it just helps most people, it's worth it.

SABR, I agree about the posting of questions - we do our best to watch questions getting placed in there but they happen so often we sometimes miss them! Perhaps we need a dedicated Genius Bar cleaner?

Is there a space available? :(

Frankly, I think the Genius Bar should just be locked. If someone has a new guide for it they should post it elsewhere and then request it be moved to the Genius Bar.

I thought IPB hase a topic vote if it was helpful or not. Better yet, the topic poster should also add a poll to the top to see how helpful the tut is. If the admin or mods deside it belongs in the G Bar, they they move it. I agree, the G Bar should be closed to prevent to new people from post questions in it. Hell, I might even post some favorite recipes I make my cook, cook for me :)

with all respect, domino, i don't think a "vote" to determine whether something is included in the Genius Bar is a good idea. popularity does not guarantee quality or value, think "President Bush". no really, he was voted into office! there isn't enough room on this page to contain my rant on "the curse of populism, downfall of democracy and ascendance of infantilism", so i'll leave it at that. :)

a hint or tutorial that only one person finds useful, and is definitive, should be given equal space with one that interests thousands.

locking down the Genius Bar, with requests for inclusion is a great idea, for a perfect world. ;) use me as an example, my guide wasn't ready for inclusion. it worked for me, not for all, it wasn't definitive. many people will request inclusion into the Bar before their guide is completely tested. not all will ask for their guides to be removed if faulty. the moderators certainly can't test each one.

i requested that my guide be moved out of the genius bar until it had been completely tested. others might not, and questions would be strewn from one end of the forums to the other if my guide had been locked. clutter and confusion. blech! :)

i've thought about this, and posted on the situation of clutter in the Genius Bar before. my suggestion is, if it's a question, delete it, don't move it. you are told twice, and the information is obvious and well placed.

"The Genius Bar (Learn Here)" and "THIS FORUM ISN'T FOR QUESTION THREADS"

no ones feelings are hurt by a silent deletion, unless they are mentally ill or too sensitive to live. it will free our moderators for more important work.

I understand what you're saying q, the problem is, when it cames to hardware, there is no definative how-to. I put together a tut for installing apache, mysql, php. That pretty much get most of the people, even working on 10.3 version. But if you put together a tut for P4, C Dou, notebooks, agp, storage media, et al.. None of the how-to's will ever make in that forum . What's worse is the orignal poster carries the task of being the thread's technical support.

In other words, I reery don't know what to say about the G Bar :D.
