Media Center using Boot Camp

Apple states that only XP Home and Pro could be installed with Boot Camp. I don't see why one cannot install Media Center Edition (MCE)? For a starter MCE sometimes come on a single DVD or worst case scenario the installer could be copied to windows partition and MCE could be installed from the HDD (the later would take installing XP first and then installing MCE over it). So anybody has any luck installing MCE with Boot Camp and if so what method did you use?

Also, Apple doesn't list IR driver in a list of Boot Camp drivers. Would IR work with Boot Camp drivers? If there is an IR driver and IR/Apple Remote would work under Windows, could it be used to control MCE?

(I know Apple Remote doesn't have enough buttons, but what it got should be enough for basic MCE use)

Please use this thread to post your experiences with MCE installed with Boot Camp.

I would assume that the only reson you can't install an upgrade or MCE is because you can't eject the CD to put in the second CD during Windows XP Installation. I would assume that you could install upgrade versions, MCE and ect. if you burned all of the files on the same CD/DVD. Like have the win98 directory from a Windows 98 CD and the i386 directory from the XP CD on one disc and it should work when it checks for files on a previous OS CD. Linux ditros put on one DVD should work like this too, at least theoretically they should. This means media center should run with full sopport. If you would want a TV tuner that woruld work, you can even get one from here:

Windows MCE IS XP Pro. That's what I have been running on my 20" iMac since XoM was released, and what I will be installing when I get home tonight to give Boot Camp a go.

I don't see why it wouldn't run, and if I can remember, I'll post back my results here.

I'm sure someone can/will hack together a driver/hack for the use of the remote.

It would be pretty cool to ue the Apple Remote in either XP or OS X. Anyone feel up to the challenge? :)

back in my carputer days, people were using some generic IR-serial software to receive the signals and another called Girder to translate those signals to Windows events (like volume up/down, next track, etc.) within certain tools (like WinAMP). I actually built an IR to serial device that I had working like this with my machine, with an IR receiver from Radio Shack (couple of bucks).

It might take something like this to get the receiver working until Apple releases a driver (probably in the next update of Boot Camp).

I would imagine it's simply not "offcially" supported because of the lack of ATI "MCE" drivers...

I don't think that that is a reason. I use MCE with the regular ATI drivers and it works just fine.

MCE DVD is available, and without the remote the TV won't work, though thats not gonna be a problem, though would be nice to use the hauppauge usb pvr 150 with it.

The TV should work without the remote. I used the TV part of my custom built MCE machine without a remote until I bought one about a month ago. It worked just fine using the onscreen controlls and the +/- keys on the keyboard.

Yeah, MCE works great. I am typing from within MCE right now. I did notice, by the way, that the computer crashes and reboots when I try to adjust the brightness using the taskbar icon installed by the Boot Camp drivers CD. I don't think it has anything to do with MCE specifically, so can anyone else verify that this is also happening?

Also, Internet Explorer functions rediculously slowly and locks up for bits at a time when I go to Windows Update. It seems to work fine though, for other sites. I wonder if it has something to do with the CSM installed as part of Boot Camp interfering with WU reading the software/driver list.

My install doesn't have any of those problems. I did install Firefox and install the TPM driver however.

I've installed mce used boot camp, my mce remote is working fine :-)

Shame the dvb tuner isn't. Get an error saying "tuner not found", Am using a Terratec T2 usb dvb (came with eyetv for mac), using the terratec software can use the tuner and get a pic + sound, it's just mce that doesn't like it.

Will be getting my old Hauppage WinTV Nova-T back in the next few days from a friend, I knwo for sure that works in mce so will try that one instead.
