I had a similar problem on my pc, needed correct gfx drivers to boot login, does it boot to a grey screen.

If i remember it had something to do with changing the driver part in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to vesa, i know for nvidia owners its "nv" to "vesa" that you change, as its booting in use the keys to match <Ctrl><Alt>F2, not sure how that works on a mac, but that should get you to a terminal window to sudo pco the above config

Make sure your system time is correct and maybe the font installation got corrupt during the install process. You might also try to reconfigure the xserver.

log in with CTRL+ALT+F1 then do the following:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

The default answers are usually correct, but you might want to try other options. Do take notes so you don't repete the same options.

What might be the problem with Mac and Ubuntu is that Alsa is started during the boot stage and again another sound server during user login. I personally have never had a problem with how the sound server starts under PC dual but it looks like Mac users do. Just follow link declan posted.
