Voodoo 9.5 Kernel BETA 1

Please read the Test plan and debug procedure PDFs before proceeding with the beta test. Please understand that this is a beta test - it may break your system, and novices should not attempt to test the kernel!

Please report success on this thread. Please report failures on GoogleCode's Issues section.

Always attach log collected from debug Procedure 2, even for success reports! - this helps us mark off your setup as "working" on our internal testing chart.

The release marks the beginning of a unification of all kernels and setups, including sleep+speedstep, sse3+sse2 and intel+amd among other things.

Errata:

Page 1 of Test Plan PDF, 2nd last line: should say debug procedure 1 (kernel panic), not 0.

Page 2 of Test Plan PDF, tests 1 and 2 should refer to debug procedure 2, not 1.

These were last minute changes, sorry about that.

Thanks!

~VoodooLabs

OK, thanks. I may give it a shot. If something goes wrong, can I restore back my current kernel and system kext, if so how?

as MercurySquad already said in his first post, "novices should not attempt to test the kernel!" .. if you have to ask how to 'restore' the kernel, testing this is not for you.

Competent testers should already be able to move the kernel to / without issue, boot from it, test it, and boot back into their old kernel without having to ask how to do that.

Sorry, but I am testing this already. And yes, had no problems following the instructions. So far, so good. So I say anybody can test this, as long as you are willing to follow the instructions.

I've loaded it, and everything seems stable.

The only test which had an issue was shutting down (got a kp the first time I tried it), but that may have been the result of switching kexts, such as the System, AppleSMBIOS, and AppleSMBIOSEFI extensions in order to conform with the recommended platform. I haven't been able to repeat it, so I'm not opening an issue on it.

Great work.

I found an interesting issue. With the Beta kernel, Marvin's patcher won't even launch. However, it works fine on Alpha 13. Additionally, if you let Marvin run rampant and patch the beta kernel, it won't even boot.

Patch the...kernel? Why patch the kernel itself? Don't do it!

On the other hand if you are unable to boot on AMD with patched files, that's a bug - report it.

This kernel is a transition version for the cpuid patcher so some things might behave differently.

Beta 1 Kernel is working on my Athlon 64 X2 4400+ on ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe (nforce4). Small issues I've noticed so far: wrong cache size in System Profiler - should be 2M not 4M (1M per core). Alpha 13 reported 2M. Marvin's amd utility for patching files won't start on beta 1 - works fine on alpha 13.

oh jeez I'm going insane trying to figure out what value to export! When I make it per core someone complains it should be total, when I make it total, someone else complains it should be per core :)

Can someone confirm which way it should be?

As for Marvin's -- can you please start it in a terminal and maybe get some sort of log info etc. ?

Or could someone hook me up with a copy of Marvin's utility.

System is Stable ;) and all programs run fine.

Sleep : sometimes

Gateway from my Sig sleeps with issues if linux FS driver is loaded.

other then that all programs seem to launch and run Great, I included all the logging info and the syslog cuts around working sleep and Crashed sleep,

udmarket Causes the crash on wakeup:

{

udmarket:

Description: Userspace Driver Market

Location: /Library/StartupItems/udmarket

Provides: udmarket

Enabled: Yes

Requires: Resolver, mDNSResponder, Core Services

}

this kernel will do both, depending on if I have Ext loaded, and that is not often.

Shutdown : Yes

Audio/Video : Good

Xd : Yes

TSC : seems ok, will test more later. (1 second off)

Keep up the Great work.

sorry for my stupid question, but HOW DO YOU RESUME after putting your hackintosh to sleep?!?!?

LOL. Read the included PDF! To resume you press the power button on desktops/laptops, or put the lid up on laptops. Unless I'm totally missing the question?

WOW, you were not missing the question! :D

Since I could sleep-resume so easily with my macbook pro, I assumed it would be impossible to do the same with a normal hackintosh! :) BTW it works perfect with beta1 voodoo.

WOW!!!!!!!!!! :P:blink:

@B612 just hit your power button to turn it back on (or open the lid if you're using a laptop)

I just wanted to do an official success report:

Tests 1-5 passed

Test 6 N/A

Test 7 Not Attempted

All programs are working properly (including programs such as parallels).

The only issue was not being able to run Marvin's, but using the patcher_opts=0 boot flag, Marvin's is working just fine.

I've attached my system report. My spec summary is in my signature.

I had initial problems with kernel panic caused by using a kextcache in the efi-boot partition - long story. That was resolved by removing the mkext file and adding the Extensions folder used to build it. The only residual that I see so far is that I must use the -f kernel flag to boot. I didn't need it with the alpha kernel.

Test 1 Sleep/Resume Passed: [X] Yes [_] No [_] With issues

first time it ever worked on my system

Test 2 Shutdown Passed: [X] Yes [_] No [_] With issues

Test 3 Audio/Video performance Passed: [X] Yes [_] No [_] With issues

used iTunes while running other apps - no skipping etc..
used VLC to play dvd rip stored on a NAS server - no skip or video problems

Test 4 eXecute Disable bit Passed: [X] Yes [_] No [_] With issues
