I have been trying all day to get my iMac 17" to dual boot and have re-installed and read these forums over and over. The problem I kept having was the list of partitions during the actual XP installation. I followed the instructions to the key...and still got a weird list of choices....and the EFI was always listed as C:\. I tried to install XP under the no-named 2nd partition (was done as MS-DOS originally in Disk Utility)....it would seem to install and then reboot. I then got the upside down Windows logo everytime and couldn't get past this during the reboot phase. Out of curiousity, I rebooted into OS X...then rebooted again with the XP install CD still in and went back into the Windows logo. Setup started again from scratch as if nothing had happened before....BUT THIS TIME I HAD A C:\ FAT32 partition listed for the 2nd choice and the EFI was now F: (or something). I ran the install on the C:\ partition again and this time it rebooted and entered the second phase just fine.....and I was able to go through the installation procedure (entering serial #....name....etc). It got to the end of the install and stuck on a blue background with cursor....I waited for 2 minutes and then held power button until shut off. I restarted and pressed F2.....chose Windows logo again....and the 'Welcome to XP' installation finisher is now on my screen. Can't wait to load drivers!!! COOL....hope this helps. I will give this a shot when I get home tonight, but during the boot process into the XP installation, does your log state that the MS-DOS partitions that are found are ERASED? If so, how does the installer then find an appropriate MS-DOS partition, since the xom.efi tool actually erases it again? ohiomothball Posted March 22, 2006 Author Share Posted March 22, 2006 I kept seeing C: as EFI 200mb...over and over until I tried this......it just worked....I also made the partition (ms-dos)...only 30GB....so XP installer had to use FAT32 as a choice. You can re-open OS X and re-bless the existing xom file using the terminal.....then reboot with XP cd in drive and try install again. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
chiefsalami Posted March 22, 2006 Share Posted March 22, 2006 I'm trying this right now, and it seems to work as far as selecting the correct partition to be the C: one. Incidentally, I created 3 partitions during the OSX setup process (one MS-DOS for Windows, and 2 HFS+ for OSX and Swap). As part of your first step, I had to delete the last HFS+ partition because the Windows installer complained the maximum partitions were being used. But when I rebooted, the correct C: partition was identified, and both HFS+ partitions seemed to still be shown. That's good. We'll see how the rest of the installation goes in a little while.... I kept getting the upside-down Windows logo after my 1st installation (1st unpartioned space). I rebooted using the slipstreamed CD and reinstalled. This time the correct partion (C:/, Partion 2) showed up, formatted it FAT32, and installed perfectly. Rebooted and finished install. Works perfect so far.
