Went out and picked up a second wifi card for my laptop but if doesn't seem to be working correct.

It is a Atheros AR5BXB72 does anyone know exactly what i need to do to get this card working?

I still have my dell 1490 and it works just fine. I'm running iAktos v4 on a Dell Latitude D830

any help would be greatly appreciated. I've seen a few people say that they have gotten the

5008 series working I beleive this is what card I have but I've tried to steal the IO80211Family.kext

from 10.4.6, as well as Kalway 10.5.2 neither worked. Please help!

PS this is what I get from dmesg:

start [/sourceCache/AirPortDriverAtheros5424/AirPortDriverAtheros5424-311.32.2/src/driver/AtherosController.cpp:481] loaded unsuccessfully

Using any OS provided kexts from 10.4.x in 10.5.x isn't recommended.

So you have an AR5BXB72 wifi card but unfortunately there are several versions of this card and you have not identified the card or your OS so helping you will be difficult, I do however wish you luck in finding a solution to your problem.

Yeah I know I've heard that as well I have a spare drive I'm testing this on. One my main drive i just realized that it doesn't give me the load unsuccessfully message.

The device id that I have is 168c:0024 as DCPI Manager has told me. I am running Leopard 10.5.4 from the iAktos v4 DVD, any other info that someone might need let me know and I'll try my hardest to get it to you. Thanks for the heads up on what is need to help BuildSmart. Hopefully you or someone else can help me!

Hallo

Look inside system > library > extensions > IO80211Family.kext right click "Show Package Contents" >Contents > Plugins > AirPortAtheros.kext > right click "Show Package Contents"

> Contents > Info.plist > Root > IOKitPersonalities > Atheros Wireless LAN PCI > IONameMatch

there has to be a string pci168c,24

if it isnt there, edit an existing string

Good luck

Sorry for my english

OK, before people direct you to do things that will make your situation worse here are some instructions, find the PCIUtils v3.0.0 (look in XLabs) and install it.

Provide the output of the following command

lspci -d 168c:0024 -vv -nn

I just bought a AR5BXB72 card and it works just fine.. Getting 300Mb/s on my dual band linksys. I had a broadcom 4311 in previously. When I first installed the broadcom card, I had to add in an airport connection under system prefs/network. When I switched to the AR5BXB72, it just worked. Didn't have to do anything. The AR5BXB72 I bought is a authentic Apple wifi card, so it should work. Where did you get your card and is it a wifi card from Apple?

Yeah it is a legit Apple wifi card, picked it up off of ebay. Tested it in Linux and Windows and it works fine there just not in OSX. I'm also running both cards in the laptop at the same time, don't know maybe if that is a cause of the error or not because I've removed just the broadcom card and it still does not see the atheros card....What kinda of laptop do you have that you are running this card in??

HP Pavilion DV9500t. AR5BXB72 in place of the Intel 4965. I had to patch the whitelist in the BIOS to allow any wifi card.

No, the line I was interested in was the second line which contains the vendor information however this line is missing form your output so either you did not installs the software I suggested or you missed a line when you copied the output.

Anway, it looks like an authentic apple card and provided your laptop vendor doesn't whitelist the wireless adapter it should b working without any modifications.

You have 2 miniPCIe slots in your laptop?

Buldsmart, I installed the PCI Utils and ran it. I checked with my Dell Card and it output on the second line is:

subsystem: Dell Device [1028:0007]

But when I run it for my Atheros card it just doesn't display the subsystem. Hmmm.

Yeah I have 2 mini-PCIe slots under the keyboard. One is suppose to be for a WWAN but that is the one that I'm currently running the dell card in. Which is working. I even took out the the dell card and reinstalled lastnight with just the Atheros card and it still didn't pick it up at all. I'm checking to see if Dell Whitelist Atheros but not seeing anything about that...

OK you claim you have 2 miniPCIe slots and one is dedicated to the wifi, was the test performed using this slot?

Have you tested the card in windows and linux and confirmed it works?

Since it's a genuine apple card, the only possible reason it doesn't work is that

  1. Dell white-lists the adapter preventing it from working (this would be global not just OS X specific)
  2. the card is defective.
  3. the wireless drivers are missing or corrupted.
  4. the drivers are incorrect for the installed OS.

I do have several new genuine Dell 802.11a/b/g/n miniPCIe (Broadcom based) wifi card, it's the one Dell sells for $89.99, the card works without any modifications and is recognized as a third party airport card, it can be easily rebranded to apple subsystem ID's and is essentially the same Broadcom card that apple uses, perhaps this is the card you should have bought, rebranded it to apple subsystem ID's and if it stopped working you could restore the Dell subsystem ID's and it would be useable.

I do suspect that Dell white-lists the wifi adapter but I can't confirm this because I don't own one or have any intentions of buying one since I see no real advantage to owning a laptop.

Guess I jumped the gun a little. The Atheros 5008 driver provided by the installer more or less works with my AR5BMB5 wireless nic. My current problem is that I can't connect to my own WPA protected network. I can however connect to a barely in-range open wireless network. If anyone knows how to get around the WPA issue, I'd appreciate some pointers. Thanks.

Try keeping your posts in it's respective thread, this one is for AR5BXB72 and you have been posting in just about all the other Atheros threads trying to get help, we get it, your card doesn't work but since you can't seem to post in a relevant thread, I, like many others, have chosen to ignore you because in one thread you state you have it working but in another you correct yourself and say it doesn't.

In the original AR5BMB5 I state this card has connectivity issues but you seem to think that someone can magically make this card work for you, this I find doubtful and I'm not about to spend the time writing a driver like I did for the AR5001 because it's not cost effective so if the firmware in your card doesn't like WPA and you can't configure your AP for WPA2 or some other security method that does work then you're S.O.L. with your card but not necessarily everyone's AR5BMB5 will be like yours so theirs might work where yours doesn't.

BuildSmart yeah I can use both cards in Windows and Linux(BT3), windows required me to download drivers for it but BT3 seen both fine. I can connect with both cards just fine in either of those OS's. I'm currently trying a new install to see if I can get the Atheros card working going to try the Boot 132 method with a retail DVD to see maybe if that will help out or not. I would rather have the Atheros card working since it is a N capable card.

Basically you have confirmed that your card is not white-listed in BIOS cause if it was it wouldn't work in windows either.

I suspect that the installed driver is the problem, if it's been substituted or modified it might have been done incorrectly and this is why it doesn't work.

Wanna try something useful without doing an install?

BootSwap the retail DVD, in the task bar will be an airport icon, if you can see any AP's that broadcast their SSID then the card works with the proper driver, if it doesn't then I suspect something may be wrong with it.

Okay I've searched here and on google what is BootSwap? The only one that I run across on google is for the iPhone. Sorry never heard of that before.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, ROFLMAO.

BootSwap... it's a process not a thing, you boot a CD and then swap it for the apple DVD.

You suggested the process to perform the vanilla installation, I was just telling you you don't need to perform the installation to see if the wireless card works.

I hope you get it figured out cause you have narrowed it down to two possibilities, bad card, bad drivers., I believe the latter which shouldn't be too hard to validate.

Thank you for your feedback BuildSmart. As you undoubtedly have observed, I am very new to the InsanelyMac forums. My past experiences with similar forums is that people tend to only follow their own threads - hence my posting in multiple threads. I already have admitted that I posted on my issue prematurely and I expect that other members of this forum are mature enough to appreciate my admission. I have attempted to post response messages in my posts asking for help stating my discoveries. If this degree of redundancy annoys major contributors such as yourself, perhaps we could use a more obvious means of marking particular threads as redundant or defunct.

Your reply inspired feelings of embarassment and resentment in me. Perhaps this was warranted, to some degree. I'm responding with the assumption that there is a general desire to help less experienced users become valuable contributors to the community. In the future, I will make a distinct effort to post only once I've completely exhausted my feasible options. Please reciprocate positively. Thanks for the feedback.

Also, for what it's worth. I switched my wireless security from WPA2 to WPA1 and it didn't help (when using the wireless tool on the Menu bar) - I can't change my wireless security that much as I've got several other people who use it and small changes make them noisey. I am kind of curious why the Atheros driver reportedly for the 5008 card works with my AR5BMB5 - but obviously, I don't know too much about Atheros cards. Thanks

Keep your issues in your own thread, refrain form posting in this one, embarrassed, good, maybe it will help you realize you are hindering results for someone else cause they have to read through this {censored} to get to something that might be of value.

Resentment, how do you think I feel seeing this kind of {censored} because your problem cause you to act without consideration of others out of desperation to get it resolved because you want it fixed now, pleae refrain from further cluttering this thread, if you must respond, respond in your thread, I'm sure I'll eventually come across it when I have time to help someone else.

Any more news on this? I have tried putting an Apple b/g MiniPCIe card (AR5BXB6) in my Inspiron 640m, but get the same AtherosController.cpp message. The card works fine in Windows and Linux, and in OSX on a MacBook and on my Acer Aspire. I'm using a Dell 1390 right now, but the range is nowhere near as good as the Atheros or even the OEM Intel 3945. Also aircrack-ng and other interesting tools for Linux work better with the Atheros card.

bump!

anyone make progress on this error? I really would like to use my Atheros card instead of the broadcom garbage... Every time i want to use linux i have to open my laptop and swap the MiniPCIe cards. (Yes, I know there's the wl driver for broadcom/linux, but it's useless, you can't even do iwlist eth1 scan.)
