somusque Posted March 18, 2006 Share Posted March 18, 2006 Hi, I already had created three partitions when I got the Intel iMac. I had put OS X on the first partition. Do I really need to move it to the second? I want to avoid having to re-install it. If I need to move it, how is it done best, without losing hard links such as those on the desktop? I tried the XP installation but it said it could not install XP to this partition (the second one). I had previously erased it with Disk Utility and specified FAT32 as file system. I did not try if the XP installer would have been willing to install on the first partition, so I don't know if it's the partition number or something else that prevented the installation. The Viking Posted March 18, 2006 Share Posted March 18, 2006 I hadn't read the instructions too carefully, and made OSX my first partition, and left a 15GB partition for Windows as my 2nd partition. The EFI module that Blanka wrote seems pretty smart, since I'm booting fine to Windows, on my 2nd partition. No matter WHAT you do, XP is going to want to reformat the FAT partition you gave it. THAT'S OKAY! But DO NOT partition it using the Windows utility. In short, XP is fine on the 2nd partition. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It is now a Mac OS volume, and it fails when it is asked to erase it in any other format. So what do I do? Can I edit the MBR with a disk utility and change the partition's type to FAT32?
