Jailbreak iPod Touch 2.0

OK so I'm buying an 8GB iPod Touch (Jan 2008 Software Update) and it ships with 1.1.5 firmware. What I want to do is jailbreak it and update it to the latest firmware. I'm planning to use Pwnage Tool to jailbreak, so what do I do? First update to 2.0 and then jailbreak or can I just take the ipsw created by Pwnage Tool, restore it, and have Jailbreak + latest firmware at the same time?

Thanks

From what I know you should be able to just install the custom firmware. Once you have put on the custom firmware update your ipod to 2.0.2 then use quickpwn to jailbreak it again. Check inside Cydia for more updates on the update.

Wow, where do you guys get your info on how to jailbreak? LOL

Don't listen to these guys, ~pcwiz. I will help you.

My choice is PwnageTool for Mac. The way it works is simple: You get the latest firmware (2.0.2 (5C1), and load it into PwnageTool. It has a nice UI to help guide you and make it an easy process. If you aren't familiar with advance stuffs, just keep PwnageTool in easy mode, not expert.

Yopu'll go through the steps, and it will create your custom IPSW. It will then tell you to put your device into DFU mode, and it will guide you on how to do so. Then, through iTunes, restore with your custom firmware, and there you are. Jailbroken iPod touch 8GB.

iPoco, QuickPwn does NOT require the iPod to be previously jailbroken. There would no use for QuickPwn at that point. Whoever told you that is wrong. It works quite similarly to how ZiPhone worked (which works with 1.1.5 as well still). Here is a link showing the similarities and differences on how ZiPhone and QuickPwn work: http://linuxoniphone.blogspot.com/2008/08/...es-between.html

Now, if you want to use QuickPwn, it's pretty much the same, except you wont be installing a custom firmware through iTunes. You need to be on 2.0.2 unjailbroken. You will load the 2.0.2 firmware into QuickPwn, and it will create a ramdisk which contains all the patches which it then uploads to the device (during which you will actually see the pwnapple logo on the iPod touch). When al is said and done, your device will be jailbroken with Installer and Cydia.

I hope that clears things up. Also, if you get ANY errors with iTunes, make sure your device is in DFU mode. This is where the PwnageTool and QuickPwn methods lie with an exploit found in DFU and #####.

Thanks for the explanation Hara Taiki. One question, how do I get it out of DFU mode once the jailbreak is done? Will it automatically go back into the normal mode after restoring the custom firmware or what?

EDIT: And does that mean I can go directly to 2.0,2 without first updating from 1.1.5?

To answer the first question, yes. You will enter DFU mode either restore to your custom firmware you built with PwnageTool or enter DFU to use QuickPwn, both of which will puut the device into Normal mode (as if you first turned it on out of the box where you see the Connect to iTunes logo and the header battery), and iTunes will "activate" and bring you to the lockscreen.

To answer the second question, yes. You can go directly to 2.0.2. You can download 2.0.2 for free here, where it get's downloaded off of Apple's servers directly, since they didn't protect it as they did 2.0. So no, you don't need to purchase it either.

Feel free to ask anything else.

I grabbed 2.0.2 5C1 from Demonoid :D 242.24MB file size, its original firmware. This all looks good. One quick thing I have to verify, do you turn the iPod on and plug it in before the Pwnage process and then turn it off and put it into DFU mode when it says to?
