Grown On Trees Posted March 17, 2006 Share Posted March 17, 2006 On the IRC channel last night (and this morning in fact) thesman has suggested installing Fink (a set of ported Unix tools I think) and using mkisofs to create the ISO. I'm not sure if anyone has been successful with a disk done this way and so have been reluctant to go through the rigmarole of installing Xcode and the SDK in order to compile the preliminary Intel build of Fink and then wrestle with Terminal (it still scares me!) in order to try it out. If someone can confirm they've done it then I'll give it a go (although a handy-dandy fools guide of how to go from downloading Fink through to finished disk would be hugely appreciated if anyone's feeling generous). Darwinian Dude Posted March 17, 2006 Share Posted March 17, 2006 What about installing XP and Nero inside Virtual PC on a FAT vpc image, on your mac in order to burn the image to an iso inside the virtual XP, then using networking get that burnt created image out of the virtual xp onto the mac, burn it using toast? or just too hard? should work though Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

ClamXavMan Posted March 20, 2006 Share Posted March 20, 2006 Unfortunately, Nero won't install under VirtualPC as it requires DirectX for some obscure reason. When trying to set it up initially, I cobbled together an install disc by taking an original XP CD and slipstreaming it with the SP2 download from M$'s website. I did that within VPC and then dragged the folder onto my OS X desktop. I then manually copied the XOM stuff into the relevant places. Then, I followed the instructions to use mkisofs to build the ISO which I subsequently burned using Disk Utility. When booting up my mini, it found the CD and recognised it as an install disc, but didn't go any further, presumably because of the OEM XP -> SP2 step. I suspect I should maybe have slipstreamed it to SP1 first then SP2. If it weren't for that, I suspect it would've worked. Sadly, I didn't realise that was the problem until after I had asked my soon-to-be-brother-in-law to do the necessary for me on his windoze box. His Nero-burned copy worked first time. Not sure if that's any help to you but I hope it was worth my sharing it. I'm trying to install mkisofs but Fink can't find that package! There is no cdrtools package too. Go to the FinkCommander menu -> Preferences and then look through the available options (I'm afraid I don't have it on this machine, sorry) 'till you find something about "stable packages". Basically, you want to be able to install unstable packages - of which mkisofs is one. One problem I came across whilst doing the mkisofs phase is that the instructions tell you to set isolevel to 4, but the standardised levels are only 1 to 3!
