Hi Folks,

I wonder if you could help with this.

I gave my old 10.5.2 iATKOS based hackintosh to a colleague as I moved to the dark side and bought a proper 24" iMac.

Despite me repeatedly warning him against it, he accidentally installed the 10.5.4 combo updater. I have since replaced the kernel and added relevant kexts, and the machine now boots.

However, the GUI never launches.

The video controller is an ATI Radeon 2600 Pro (PCIe). I have installed the latest drivers from lastExile and they definitely include the correct PCI ID string.

If I boot in single user mode, the Radeon kext loads without errors from the command line.

Any ideas apart from a reinstall? Is there a way of turning debugging on so I can see what is happening when the kexts are being loaded during a normal boot?

Thanks,

Steve

What happens if it should launch the GUI? Sitting at white screen, kernel panic?

Did you clear the .kext cache after re installing the ATI driver maybe tried:

update -v -x

at boot prompt? You should give the rig back to your mate with the install DVD, so that he learns not to use combo updates on H4ckint0shes. Maybe you won't have to re install it at 10.5.5, 10.5.6 ... releases then...
