ASUS P5xx E-SATA (JMicron) experiences

I just thought that I'd share my experiences with my ASUS P5B DeLuxe when it comes to e-sata (this board has an e-sata port on board).

 

I have all my HD:s working perfectly thanx to the IOATAFamily.kext (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=88335).

I currently have four built in SATA disks in my case, but I needed one more, and I thought that the e-sata port would work out of the box.

Well, it kind of did, but the disk froze from time to time (trying to copy a large file was really quick at first, but then nothing for a while until it started going at it again). I tried reinstalling the kexts and repairing permissions, but to no prevail.

My SATA controllers are marked as "Serial-ATA BUS" in system preferences, and the disks perform well when tested in XBench.

The e-sata was however marked as "Generic AHCI controller" with the drive visible underneath.

 

Accouring to this thread (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=108479&hl=jmicron+sata) both the e-sata and one of the onboard controllers are JMicron 363's (both are the same model). I tried the solution posted there, but my system wouldn't boot until I deleted that specific plist-file.

 

However - when I purchased my e-sata enclosure I found a PCI backplate that had an e-sata on the outside and a regular SATA cable on the inside, so I tried hooking up the disk using this one instead. Voila - the disk performs flawlessly and no more halts (even tho it's on the black JMicron connector which as stated above should be the same as the onboard e-sata port). Go figure!

The enclosure also has USB 2.0 onboard, but the e-sata clearly outperforms that.

 

I hope this helps some of you to a quicker sollution! :P
