MacBook Pro RAM Upgrade

Accoding to Crucial.com's Memory Advisor tool, my MacBook Pro can be upgraded to 4GB of RAM. For some reason it will only find 3.3 GB (which is a known limitation for other chipsets). Does anyone have any ideas why this would be the case? I was under the impression that 17" MBPs could be upgraded to 4GB without any problems.

My MacBook was sold in January of 08, so it is of the generation immediately before the one currently available (making that Apple link somewhat half-useful).
