I hope that by creating this post us users with the 8400M GT can get a solution.

I have this card in a Sony Vaio VGN-AR520E and there are similar vaios that also carry this card.

You can get the card working but on External display ONLY. Use the NVinjectGO kext and it will detect it.

My specs are

T7100 dual core

PM965 chipset

2GB ram

NVIDIA 8400M GT

Other stuff doesnt matter

If you want to get the card working you can discard the drivers for it and use the computer in VESA mode.

I installed using Kalyway 10.5.2

I have the IATKOS dvd but it will not install on my machine.

I have scoured the internet and as of now the problem lies with the monitor as well as partially having to do with the drivers im sure.

Changing the NVCAP setting will NOT work. I have personally tried this several times and it will not work. I even tried copying the NVCAP from an 8400M GS and no go.

If you have a similar machine or are having trouble please post your experience here.

The NVCAP settings were defaulted to

04000000 00000300 0C000007 00000000

I tried these

Changing the three and the C to 1 and 2 so it would read

04000000 00000100 02000007 00000000

Then I tried changing the 3 and C to 2 and 3 with the same result which was that it boots but only with external source.

I did notice that when it was connected to my HDTV it recognized it as a samsung tv which it was.

I have vgn-ar61ZU

my 8600m gt 512 don t have internal screen with any nvinjecter ,diabolik.... etc

i ve tried efistudio efigfx but no qe/ci so i think there s a problem with gfxutil because it didn t show correct ram value with efigfx and suspect to don t show right input on vaio i ve tried many nvcap and no one enables output

Okay, I'm glad that somebody started this topic.

I also have 8400m GT (VGN-FZ190) and I'm willing to experiment with different NVCAP values... But first, I'd love to know what values to change in info.plist! I've read through different forums, and none of the examples helped.

Here's my dilemma:

Original lines:

<key>NVCAP</key>

<data>

BAEBAQ4AAQAOAAAAAAABCwAAAAA=

</data>

Do I change it to the following?

<key>NVCAP</key>

<data>04000000 00000100 02000000 00000007 00000000</data>

Thanks!

Hello all again.I have done alot of research and the problem is for sure not the NVCAP. The internal display itself is the culprit. Most monitors use whats called an EDID. Vaio laptops use a seperate type of connection and when you try to boot os 10.5 from it It is waiting for a signal from the monitor but seing how it uses a different connection type the signal will never be received so it will not work. The only way to fix this is to have a special driver made.I dont know why the monitor works in VESA mode but I know for a fact that changing the NVCAP will not fix the problem. Google search soft EDID for more information.I would make the driver myself but I am still learning so I dont have that ability. There are several other forums about these vaio notebooks you should check into. I dont like posting links but if you google search you can find them. If I can find a solution "doubtful" I will post it. To help me you could do research on EDID and laptopdisplay.kext If you insist on changing the NVCAP just to try follow this procedure.1. To change it download the developer tool for free called Plistedit pro.2. Navigate to /System/Library/Extensions and locate NVinjectGO.kext or NVinject.kext3. Drag the icon onto the desktop. Doing this will copy it.4. Once you have Plisteditor installed right click on the file you copied over and click "show package contents"5. double click on info.plist."side note" Some people are complaining that their NVCAP value is in letters not numbers. This is because you dont edit the actual text. There is a tree style menu above the text and you follow this, IOkitPersonalities,NVinject/entries to add/ then you will see on the left hand side the NVCAP. double click on the right side to edit the value.6. When you are done save the file and drag the entire package "1 file" back to where you pulled it from System/Library/Extensions. you will have to authenticate.7. When you are done it is very important you follow this next step or when you boot it will not be able to use the file!!!8. go to Applications/Utilities and click on Terminal. Type word for word with spaces this.sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/NVinject.kext "press enter" "or type NVinjectgo.kext whichever you havesudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/NVinject.kext "press enter"Now reboot and get mad because it wont fix the LCD.For those of you who get stuck with the internal display it is possible to boot in VESA mode without having to reset the entire machine. Doing this will of course deactivate the gfx drivers but it will help you to use the internal lcd.1. At startup press any key when the boot screen appears.Type -s and press enter. This stands for single user mode. When it is finished loading follow these commandsmount -uw / "press enter"/movevideodrivers "press enter"This will ask you 4 questions. Say yes to the NVinject only because if you remove the NVIDIA kexts you will have to reset the permissions for those files as well and it is a real pain. When it is finished type exit to start os with internal LCD!! No QE of course.I am not sure if this works for everyone so dont get mad if it doesnt.

Hello again. In case you all vaio users out there are having trouble with your audio. I have a solution. This solution is for models, VGN-AR520E, and VGN-AR51M. Use this file with Tarugas AppleHDA patcher and it will work!!Another Quick Fix!! Want to have your internal lcd display 1440x900?? Heres how!!Download the developer tool PlisteditproNavigate to /Library/Preferences/Systemconfiguration/Drag com.apple.boot.plist to the desktop and open it.Notice the line <key>Kernel Flags</key> Then right below<string></string>In between these tags insert this"Graphics Mode"="1440x900x32"Save and replace. Aliomattux, are you currently running OS X with an external monitor with video card fully working, or just using VESA 3.0 driver on your laptop lcd screen? Also, is there any way that I can look into the VESA 3.0 driver so that I can figure out how it's recognizing the laptop screen? I'm not sure which kext file to look at (if it uses it at all). Like you're suspecting, I'm very curious as to why the VESA 3.0 can communicate with the SONY laptop screen, while none of the 3rd party drivers (natit, nvinject, nvinjectgo) can.

This is driving me nuts. It looks like Sony Vaio users can't run any decent applications or watch movies on their laptop screen, since they crash upon opening. Does anybody know how to watch movies/run iWork or any other software on their laptop screen?

The only way to make the internal screen work is to remove any 3rd party driver (natit, nvinjectgo, or nvinject). Any help would be much appreciated!

Otherwise, OS X is NOT worth using it on any of the Vaios (Laptops are meant to be portable where external monitors are not readily available).

To give an update for everyone, there is currently no solution. I have a few ideas left but they are running short. Everything that I know is stuff that I learned from other people and if nobody knows how to fix the EDID issue then of course I wont either. There are several theoretical fixes which include, 1. Waiting for new drivers to come out that support soft EDID detection, 2. Force osx into thinking there is a display connected, or 3. "not sure if this will work" Hybriding the Vesa kext with the NVinject or Nvidia kexts. I would say three is the most hopefull one. I have also learned that the macvidia drivers for tiger were actual drivers wheres the nviject are not. However I am most certain that they will not work because only up until 10.5.2 were nvidia8xxx cards supported.

If people want to help me then people working with vaio models in th AR series and the FZ series can help. Figure out your monitors EDID and NVCAP values and post them on this topic. If we can gather enough models and data it will help me and the masters of makers of NVinject to solve this problem.

People working with models that have the hdmi, svideo, and vga out would be preferable. Right now I dont know how to get the EDID but I will post it when I figure it out.

NVCAP can be gotten by dumping your VGA bios and then using NVCAP maker you can get the correct values. NVCAP maker can be downloaded via google search. To dump your vga bios however I am not sure. There is one user UK_RULES something like that, that I know did do it and I asked him but he hasnt responded. I would try to find a bios update for the entire computer and then work from there. Asking experts is always a good thing to know you are doing it right.

As per questions, I am using my VGN-AR520E with vanilla kernel currently. I do use my awsome 42"lcd occasionally to test the gfx card itself but I switch back and forth by moving the NVinjectgo driver out of my extensions folder. I also tried using dic definitions from the laptopdisplay.kext but of course no results. If some expert could at least post a hypothesis on here I would try it.

aliomattux,

I've a VGN-FZ17 with 8400M GT card, running kalyway 10.5.2 Vanilla Kernel.

At first I get blank screen on my internal LCD and using commands mount -uw/ works good but only vesa mode exactly like you. I'm looking for solution for months but nobody got it.

Kalyway 10.5.2 vanilla kernel

usb - working

Marvell Yukon ethernet - working with known kext manually modification

wifi intel 3945 - not working, waitting for iwidarwing project

bluetooth - working

sound - working output with AppleHDAPatcherv1.20& Sigmatel 7662 txt

mouse & keyboard - working

video nvidia 8400M GT - working without QE

Card reader - not working

motion eye - not working

Hi Guys,

Yeah I am stuck in your group too with this Sony internal lcd issue (such a shame with this beautiful 17"). My model is an AR710 with an 8400M GT. Hopefully we can find a fix to this issue. As soon as i get around to it I will post my edid and nvcap.

Description:

Using Kaliway 10.5.3 (from her 10.5.2)

Marvell Yukon 88E88055 - not working

Intel 4965 wifi - not working

Sigmatel Audio - not working (although mostly my fault for not having tried the Tarugas guide, need to do a little more research)

Eye Motion Cam - seems to work out of box (don't really know why)

I have an idea.I want to combine parts from the VESA kext to the nvinject or nvidia kext. I figure that the kext is basically an instruction manual for the hardware so if I could add the extra instructions it would work. The problem is that I dont know what kext leopard uses to start in VESA mode. It might be more than one. If someone can tell me what they are ill get to work. Also on an unrelated issue Who all has their spdif out working? I combined two different dumps and was able to get it detected in osx and I can turn it on but it says there arent any controls for it so it still needs work. Again on another unrelated note I was able to get the Marvell Yukon ethernet working. All I did was change one 2 to a 3 and it worked. kind of silly. To be more specific on my hardware I useMarvell Yukon 88E8053Sigmatel Codec 7664 "hard to find but posted above"Anyone get their PCMCIA card readers to work? I dont think mine will ever work. It freezes in linux and I have to force stop detection just to boot knoppix. Had alot of screaming over that one. ha. Tried the patch but it made my computer get stuck in a boot loop. I have TI PCI-8x 8039.Havent got the camera to work yet but really havent tried.

I think the VESA driver should be in the darwin open source packages by Apple http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/Current/
This is the source code not the kext so I cant use this. Besides I need to know the name of the kext it uses.

What I write are all assumptions:

About a VESA "Kext": I don't think that there is any kernel extension for vesa since it's in the kernel itself. This should be one of the functions that communicates with the graphics card: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/D...positePage.html

On the wikipedia page ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_BIOS_Extensions )about VESA itself it states that VBE is "made available through the video adapter's BIOS, which installs interrupt vectors pointing at itself". This pointing at itself is the problem. A driver like all the NV kexts (not the Injecters) will not use the Vesa interrupt but wait for a signal from the card. On Vaio laptops this signal is diferetn from other platforms. I don't know why.

For the EDID information: There's plenty of information over at the NvInject forums:

http://nvinject.free.fr/forums/viewtopic.php?t=125

http://nvinject.free.fr/forums/viewtopic.php?t=302

http://nvinject.free.fr/forums/viewtopic.php?p=2480#2480

Hope I can help. BTW: I can't dump my card's bios since it will crash the computer.

Just to clarify things. Were you able to get quartz gl on your laptop (internal screen)? Could you be a little clearer if you did get it to work? For example, could you provide steps and such?

It would be VERY nice to see it working.

Thanks!!!

He talks about a tool named osx86 tool. Website: http://######.com/osx86tools/

It's unclear if he succeded but it's worth a try.

EDIT: Tested it, does really enable Quartz Gl (but only this). I haven't seen any performance improvements

On your laptop screen? Can you watch movies and open up iWork applications? Previously on VESA, I was unable to do so.

I haven't tested this but it's enabled on the internal monitor but as I said it's only Quartz GL and not Quartz Extreme (2d not 3d acceleration as I think)

Quartz GL is enabled by default, so you are in VESA (that's why laptop screen works).

I had to enable Quartz GL using the OSX86 tool. In fact, the program states that it is turned OFF by default. After turning it on, I am now able to play movies without crashing.

Only thing now is getting some applications to run. iWork works fine with an external monitor and nvinject, but on VESA with Quartz GL on, it crashes/hangs. Does anyone have a fix for this?

I read somewhere that another guy with a VAIO was able to just use integrated graphics (GMA 950) instead of 7400m GO and was able to enable Quartz Extreme. I lost the link... It can be found on google though if you look hard enough. It looks like his "SZ3xp" has dual graphics... Not sure about my laptop though.

I own a Sony VAIO VGN-FZ190. Currently, I'm using VESA with Quartz GL turned on, which allows me to watch movies. But I can't run any useful programs like 'Keynote' in iWork. I'll post the results tonight on whether movies skip frames or not when viewed in full screen mode.

I'm going to try to install X3100 (GMA 965) drivers tonight on the OSX86.

A couple of people got X3100 graphics to work (but not on a VAIO) and I know that FZ190 has GM965 chipset. On the spec sheet, it says "GMA X3100 or nVidia 8400m GT." I'm going to assume that my laptop has both.

Also, does anyone know if there is "Advanced BIOS Settings" for VAIO laptops? Pressing F2 at startup opens up the BIOS settings, but it's only basic ones... I'm wondering if there's a way to uncover or open advanced settings.

*UPDATE: Didn't notice any frames skipping while watching movies in full screen mode (using Quicktime Player). X3100 drivers didn't recognize any VGA controllers other than nVidia.

what codecs do u use?? I use perian codecs and while playing movies in full screen mode I can see a noticeable drop in frames

thx

I'm not sure. I downloaded the divx codec by following links from the apple site... But frankly, I'm about to get rid of os x and install windows xp instead. os x is useless without quartz extreme (since you can't run any good applications without it)... i don't think any solutions to vaio lcd screens will come up anytime soon. it's a sad day.
