ero
So does this mean that instead of SSE3 it uses the x86-64 instruction set? What are advantages?
Shaithis
So does this mean that instead of SSE3 it uses the x86-64 instruction set? What are advantages? I guess it means it utilises 64bit instructions where possible. SSE3 and x64 are not mutually exclusive. Switching from 32 to 64 bit should not effect whether or not SSE is used, unless any of the hacks we use have utilised sse3 in their coding. But I thought that leopard was 64bit and there was no separate 32 bit version, hence it making use of all 4 gigs of my ram, etc.
Synaesthesia
Leopard has 64-bit libraries and can run 64-bit Applications and allows addressing of more than 4 gigs ram but the kernel itself isn't 64-bit.
ero
ah but if it runs more than 4 gigs, uses 64 bit libs, what would a 64 bit kernel benefit?

(MoC)
Ok I need some clarification. Is this just Leopard running with a 64 bit kernel or is it actually the Snow Leopard dev preview on a PC? It says "Snow kitty" so... It's another kernel that's for sure, so it might be Snow Leopard. It says Kernel 10.0.someothernumber which leads me to believe that simply because we are currently using kernels in the 9.x.x family.
