Is there a resolution limitation with a Hackintosh?

I have been having problems with my Nvidia 8400 GS card since I installed Kalyway 10.5.2 using PCWIZ guide here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...0&start=820

The problem that I'm having is that although I'm using a 1920x1200 monitor (Benq FP241W connected via DVI) the only resolution option is 1024x768.

With this resolutio it works great. But I want to run it at my monitor's native resolution of 1920x1200. I can't seem to get it to work and no matter what I try (Punk92, several version of NVInstaller) it always get me a black screen after boot and I must restore my system from a SuperDuper back up.

I've been researching for the last 15 days and can't seem to get it to work. But I have been taking a loo at people who said they have got the cards to work (not only 8400 but also 8600 and 8800) and most of them are working with lower resolutions. Now it might be just that they are suing lower resolution monitors, but I thought maybe my card is working as it should for this hack and there's a resolution limitation with these drivers? I just thought I would ask before I go crazy over this.

It looks like this under my system info:

Display:

Type: Display

Bus: PCIe

PCIe Lane Width: x16

VRAM (Total): 32 MB

Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

Device ID: 0x0422

Revision ID: 0x00a1

Displays:

Display:

Resolution: 1024 x 768

Depth: 32-bit Color

Core Image: Software

Main Display: Yes

Mirror: Off

Online: Yes

Quartz Extreme: Not Supported

Thanks in advance.

I have that same Display... Love it btw. Anyways, It works fine. You will be able to run at 1920x1200 as soon as you can get your graphics card working.

I can see that your injector isn't working correctly because your system profiler reports 32mb ram. I'd recommend using a GFX String. Or maybe give nvkush a go. Make sure you repair permissions after playing with your kexts.

I'm glad I found another Benq FP241W user.

So you have yours working with your system? Are you running Leopard? What install, Kalyway? Could you point me to a GFX String? I downloaded nvkush and will give it a try.

Thanks.

If NVkush doesn't work. (You have to remove NVInject, and/or any other injecters you have installed before you install this) Try Aqua-mac's gfx string guide here:

http://aquamac.proboards106.com/index.cgi?...&thread=509

You have to have PC EFI V8 for his guide to work.

I'm running my own custom 10.5.3 install with PC EFI V8. But that's irrelevant anyways, yours should work fine.

Thanks. I'm running Kalyway 10.5.2 installed using this guide: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...0&start=820

I'm not sure the guide's package install any injecters.

I know I skipped the graphics card driver because the guide said to do so if you had a Nvidia 8xxx series.

If you skip graphics driver you can't get resolution

Type: Display

Bus: PCIe

PCIe Lane Width: x16

VRAM (Total): 32 MB

Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

Quartz Extreme: Not Supported

This is absent of result.

I tried NVkush and it didn't work. I kept getting the screen which says I must restart my computer after I re-booted from the NVkush install. I didn't find any NVinjectors in my Extensions folders, so I didn't delete anything there before re-booting, because there was nothing. Any ideas? Am doing something wrong here? No driver installer seems to work, yet they work for other people. I have tried NVinject, Punk92, NVkush now and nothing.

My installation is:

Kalyway 10.5.1

Kalyway 10.5.2 Combo Update

Kalyway Kernels package

Then I try to install the drive. But I have also tried after installing leopard graphics update and it also didn't work. Any help much appreciated. This Mac thing is totally new to me. I have been a Windows user for my whole life and have finally decided to give OSX a try but it is not working for me. My plans is/was to buy a Mac in the near future if I get along with OSX and it's applications.

Thanks in advance.

  • 2 weeks later...

hi everyone,

i have the same nvidia geforce 8400 gs graphics card, which i think has worked great.

however, the same kalyway leopard that you guys have, i haven't been able to run dual monitors with mac, one 17inch (vga) and one 22inch (dvi).

at first, i could only up my resolution to 1280x780, on my 17inch (vga), with the 22 inch dvi not working at all..

however, after installing nvkush, i was able to get the resolution up to 1680x1050 on my 17inch (vga), but still no dice on getting the 22 to work, or getting dual monitors running!

any ideas?

thanks guys
