HINT for ACRONIS True Image Users

Arconis True Image is an very good clone tool for low level osx HD/Partition clones.

Ready for reinstall without OSX preinstall from DVD, because it clones sector by sector, so FDISK Part Table , MBR_OSX86, darwin or EFI booter ... are also saved. Thats not in filebyfile Mode of clone tools.

Acronsis support compression of the cloned images.

This works much, much better and faster if you erase (overwrite) the free (actually not used for data) hd space with ZEROS.

You can use the function in disk utility / Erase / Overwrite freespace with ... ZEROs (one time is enough!). This function is normaly used to overwrite data for security.

Your existing OS X data will NOT erased, only the freespace (HFS+ directory says: here is now a free place for data , old data can overwriten) !

After that, it take only a few minutes, Arconis will not anymore compress unused space, but with data bytes which are bad compressable, in an time + space consuming way.

It will compress the found zeros (00000000000000000....) of freespace blocks much faster+with much better compression than free space like (89012t21390931239ß0jkadsa90ß) without that zeroing before the Arconsis cloning.

My OSX Partition, 50 GB , 27 GB used / 23 GB "free" Arconsis clone gone from 28 GB (freespace not zeroed ) Imagesize to only 17 GB Imagesize (with zeros at freespace , same compression level normal!).

Also the compression time is 20% faster.

The size is a bit over my CarbonCopyCloner (CCC) , which is 13 GB (saves in FilebyFile Mode, not sector by sector, FDISK Part Table , MBR , EFI NOT saved, needs OS X to reclone).

For normal / more often usage i prefer CCC or better superduper to clone in an image or backup incremental way.

But sometimes (1 to 3 times / year) an sectorbysector Arconsis Image clone is very good.

too bad you dont explain if it works with guid partition table, then this would be the best method. But from what you are saying it seems like its guid compatible because it does sector for sector copying.
