Hello.

Im a music addicted and a producer (wanna be).

I use windows xp with, LOGIC 5 and ABLETON LIVE, with a lot of vst's.

Actually i can run Leopard (by kaliway) in my machine (AMD 3000+ / MSI neo fis2r / 1.5GB / ATI 9600XT 500GB...)

I just installed osx86 to use LOGIC STUDIO, and it works, but with a lot of troubles...

I will buy a new machine, and i want your opinion about some hardware.

About 2 months i started searching for best hardware, but there are milions of diferent configuration, hope you could help me choosing good stuff.

My dealer just have ASUS Motherboards (I'm from Porto/Portugal), and i don't know what grafic card i should choose! So i tought about this configuration...

- ASUS P5W DH DELUXE WIFI

- INTEL PENTIUM CORE2 QUAD Q6600 2,4Mhz 775 FSB1066 2x4MB

- DDR2 Hyper X 2GB 800MHz CL5 ( KIT de 2 X 1GB )

- MAXTOR 500GB SATA II (16MB CACHE)

- CHIEFTEC 400W / ATX 2.0

- GF 8600GT Magic 512Mb TV-OUT;DVI what about grafic? i'm lost... :thumbsdown_anim:

I don't play games, "it's all about music"

Thanks!

ps: Sorry about my english

You're best off getting an actual mac if you exclusively want Logic Pro, and it has the upside of being able to run Windows through Bootcamp aswell

That´s not true lots of people running Logic Pro on hacks I´m one of them (got a paid for leagal version) check out the benchmarkthread we´re getting really good scores. The old G5 Mac does´nt even come close to our scores but the new mac pro is ofcourse way better but only if you have the really expensive double quadcore version. You can go really far with a hackmac based on a q6600 cpu when it comes to logic pro.

What's your hardware specifications?

I just don't buy a mac pro because i have no money available, i'm just a music lover, and i don't make money with it. If i get addicted to mac and osx, of course, i'll buy one ;)

Please tell me if the hardware that i choose is good, or for that price range i can buy something better...

Thanks ;)

Apple does not provide a good piece of hardware in the middle range for audio production like would be ideal for using Logic. A dual quad mac Pro will cost a fortune. An iMac is just not quite enough juice. A hack is a great way to go if you're willing to spend the time tweaking it. I have been able to run Logic without problems on my GA-P35-DS4 with Q6600 cpu, overclocked to 3.2ghz. Runs like a dream actually. My benchmark results are great If Apple would provide a machine in this price/performance range, I would definitely get one and avoid the hassles. but until they do I will keep using my hack.

I totally agree I´ve got a GA p35ds3r mobo (oh man I must have typed this a least 20 times by now hehe) a q6600 cpu (no OC on it yet), kalys leo 10.5.1, a 660w powersuply, 8 gig memory, an old IDE harddrive 7200 rpm, a GA 7300gs videocard dual displays working with the NVinject kext, a really cheap box that I payed round 30 USD for, a Focusrite Saffire Pro 10i/o soundcard. Just installed the OS no big problems even tried to just moved over my old HD from my last build with the OS installed and it fired right up. Only "problem" I have is the powersuplly stays on from time to time so I have to use the button but it´s no big deal.

Gteles I think the Asus mobo and the rest of the gear you´re thinking to buy is OK but check it out for sure before you buy or you can check out what stuff people use over in the Benchmark thread. I also have an old Asus P4p800SE mobo with a P4 singelcore 3Ghz running kalys leo 10.5.1 on and Logic Pro (can´t squeze so many tracks out of that one but it works for sure) so Asus gear should work OK. Be sure to get a PCI to Firewire card with Texas Instruments chipset if your planning to get a FW soundcard, this is important. Good luck man.

Thanks for all the support, i've searched all the benchmark treat, and i liked the results. What do you think about Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4, there's a lot o people usin that. I never used Gigabyte, just asus, and msi...

And about graphic card? I was thinking about GF 8600... For dual monitor, just a question, i can use 2 monitors with logic? Like a split...

Rock on!!

yeah you can use dual monitors with logic, i used a 6600 and a 7200gs on my old system (p4 3.2)

all was good

though i recommend one drive for the system, one for sample libraries, and one for your audio projects (or if budget is tight, use the same drive for samples and audio projects)

Coollllll

I thought about using 2 discs, one to Operating System, and other to Samples/Library/Projects...

In the beginnig i will use a 200GB Maxtor Sata to O.S. and a 500GB Samsung to other stuff, actually i don´t use many samples, just a couple, to use with the "sampler" of live, OMG, i can make crazy things, eheheh...

Just another question, is easy to use an scsi drive? Like WD Raptor, i always tought about buying one of this, but in realtime, it worth the money? Comparing 7400rpm to 10000rpm is "just a little bit" faster....

The GA-P35-DS4 works great with kalyway. Its known as one of the more supported boards. that is what I use. One thing you should know is that there is an issue that has been identifed with the BIOS whereby on XP when using the DPC latency checker, some DPC latency spikes have been identified. Since then, Gigabyte has issued directly to users that asked for it, a beta bios that seems to fix this issue. to my knowledge, there is no way to test for the DPC latency when running OSX, but I would imagine that whatever they fixed in the BIOS would impact OSX users as well. Its a very small thing and most likely you wont' even know you're missing it, but I would reccomend you find a wya to run the DPC latency checker under XP and then when you verify that you have these spikes, track down the correct beta bios (I am using beta bios 13b for the GA-P35-DS4 rev 2.0). It eliminates the DPC latency spike and one would hope, makes sure everything in the hardware is performing as expected.

I wonder if there is any kind of OSX equivelent of the DPC latency checker. Does anyone know?

As far as HD's, I don't think yuo need tthe Raptor. But WD is making the quietest drives at the moment and 7200rpm whould be fine. Get SATA2. I put the 7200rpm WD's into my machine and they benchmark at over 100MB/sec. The bottleneck is not the drive at this point.

Well,In my asus P5w dh deluxe logic is running fine, check my signature, BUT....BUT the plugin VIRUS CONTROL (i think all of you producers know what is it a VIRUS TI keyboard/rack/synth and the VIRUS CONTROL), well this plugin and this keyboard arent working fine on Hacks mac. What isnt working? Well is the sync, midi sync sux, i tried it in all my 3 hackintosh (toshiba a100, asrock conroe 1333, asus p5wdh deluxe) and i had always the same problem, when i use the usb out the virus plugin sounds ok in the sync arpeg, but is a bit desync with the midi, when i use the analog outs, midi is ok but the arpeg is out of sync.U cant go out from this.... i tested it in 3 hacks... and with Vanilla kernel...For the rest: logic pro is running very nice in my asus, and i wanna see some benchmarks from a 3 Ghz quad core macpros..compared to a quadE6600 not overclocked...like mine. Another tip, i can use the PCI slots, im running one UAD PCI where i cant in a real mac (PCI-e needs)Anyway i want to know if somebody here is getting a real mac and is using a virus TI plugin control.. i want to know if this toy gives the same problems in a real mac.

my disk setup:250 GB maxtor 7200 rpm for the osx500 GB 7200 rpm for the samples libraries500 GB 7200 rpm for the streaming audio

Sorry but you dont considerated the mac pro quad.I was really think to buy it 2nd hand for run logic and virus TI without troubles.

I SOLVED THE PROBLEM... never use ps2 mouse and keyboard, use USB mouse and keyboard and no more desync probs.
