Numberzz
10.5.3 is finally available as a downloadable update. The update itself weighs in at a hefty 420MB. As with most Apple updates, it wasn't very descriptive, stating only: The 10.5.3 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac. As with all updates, DON'T INSTALL, unless you have a vanilla kernel, or until some more testing has been done. There aren't many visual changes with this update, but now you have the opinion to backup or not when you are on a laptop with Time Machine. Here are all the General fixes, all the others can be found in the read link at the bottom of the article. -Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras -Addresses an issue with stuttering video and audio playback in certain USB devices -Improves 802.1X (Wifi) behavior and reliability and when using Time Machine -Includes fixes for Time Machine compatibility with Time Capsule -Fixes a font issue that could result in Helvetica Narrow being used in applications instead of Helvetica. -Resolves stability issues with Word of the Day, iTunes Artwork, and Slideshow screen savers. -Fixes an issue in which certain attached hard drives may not show up in the Finder. -Addresses an issue with .Mac syncing of Dashboard widgets over multiple Macs that use different screen resolutions. -Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras. -Improves the accuracy of the Software Update progress bar indicator. -Addresses an issue in which Finder may not be available if the computer name is blank in Sharing preferences. agrafuese
Hey Numberzz, not sure if you saw this: http://netkas.org/?p=65 which leads to: http://netkas.org/?p=50 (it's the same tutorial from 10.5.2, just with a new title). Should be fine for those of us running vanilla kernel, but those with a hacked kernel probably want to wait for some more news.

J Arcane
So how would I go about telling which kernel I'm running? I used the Kalyway 10.5.2 disc, but it's been over a month and I can't for the life of me remember which I used. Plus I installed that NVInstaller thing that was supposed to fix vid card sleep . . . Maybe I'll just wait until there's a 10.5.3 disc and reinstall. Need to do that soon anyway.

NPPraxis
I'm on a vanilla kernel, but is it safe to just straight out install the update, or should I be worrying about it breaking anything?
finetuned
Hi I just want to report that I successfully updated my T60 from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3, following Netkas' method. This is the same method that applied to updating to 10.5.2. You can find it on his website. Had to re-apply the mod to ATIRadeonX1000.kext's contents and I had to restore my old IO80211Family.kext to get the wireless back up. I can;t find the Time Machine option to backup when on battery though? Anyway, System Profiler shows I'm up-to-date: edit: I had to restore my powermanagement.bundle for Leopard to detect I'm on a laptop, and the new Tiome Machine feature is there now. finetuned
I was running a vanilla kernel with 10.5.2, did the update and had a kernel panic during the installation process. Now i can't reboot at all You probably forgot to remove AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext as soon as it was created. It rebuilt the kextcache, loading the installed kext, and crashed your system. Perhaps you can try to recover by booting with -s, follow the instructions for mounting your hard drive as read/write, then type: rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext rm -R /System/InstallAtStartup reboot now I can't garatuee that this will work, though. aasimbeck01
I'm going to wait till someone writes a guide in understandable english....No offense to netkas, but I can barely understand his guides - I'm not going to risk it. I am also in this situation. It would be nice for someone to rewrite his tut, it look like its rock solid but i can seem to understand alot of it. I will extrapolate here on some of were my problems are in the guide. I have highlighted in Red And Bold where my misunderstanding is. ---START--- Open Terminal/Finder/etc, go to System/Library/Extensions. start installing update. What goes where etc is? Monitor System/Library/Extensions folder, once AppleIntelCPUPowermanagement.kext appears there - remove it immideatly. u can use this little script for it, run as root, before starting upgrade while sleep 1 ; do rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext ; done While in sleep 1? What does this mean? Do i run this script before, after, or as soon as i see the file appear? once update finished, press ctrl-c in terminal window, to stop script, don’t press restart ! after it, open this file in textedit - /System/InstallAtStartup/scripts/1 find there string /System/Library/Extensions/Dont Steal Mac OS X.kext and replace with this string /System/Library/Extensions/dsmos.kext or r3d3 if u use r3d3. then save it. This just means replace a file path, right?. how do i know if i use r3d3? now u can recover ur applesmbios/applehda/etc (didn;’t u forget to make backups b4 running update ?) and finaly press restart. How do i recover it? on first start it will do smth, without booting to gui, then it will reboot, it can take about 3-4 mins, then it shuld boot normaly, if u didn;t forget smth. smth? Huh? Whats that? of course it’s all for intel core 2 based cpus and intel mobos. and pc_efi. other users can use 10.5.1 kernel/system.kext with 10.5.2 system (like amd users or pentium-d) I have a pentium 4 processor, 2.66 Ghz, Will it work? What do i have to do special? ---END--- I know for a fact that I would like a more descriptive tutorial. Other than that the tutorial is great, and the feedback on it looks good too. LioNEXT
For people with QE/CI problem and giving a futile retry with NVInstaller.41: You have to use Pacifist to force replace those kexts and framework. Apparently, NVinstaller does not force delete the newest versions of kexts and framework and replace them with old ones. In pacifist, authorize yourself, then when asked, apply replace to all (choose the dont ask ask again for this installation option from the pop up window). Everything will work fine and dandy now. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=761801

Blurn
Hey Numberzz, not sure if you saw this: http://netkas.org/?p=65 which leads to: http://netkas.org/?p=50 (it's the same tutorial from 10.5.2, just with a new title). Should be fine for those of us running vanilla kernel, but those with a hacked kernel probably want to wait for some more news. This update disabled QE/CI for me. Fix below: Update: I installed the NATIT_gfnvidia (attached) package off of the Kalyway DVD to get QE/CI back on both monitors. I got rid of NVinject completely. 1-Try removing NVinject by going to terminal and typing: -->sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/NVinject.kext 2-And then installing this package (Natit Installer) reboot. If you have QE/CI back then you are done. If not try this method: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...mp;#entry761801 This method worked for me. Backup/Replace AppleSMBIOS.kext with the one you had that was working before. Specs are in signature. Screen shot: Natit Installer (worked on my 10.5.3 to get QE/CI back)

Hi The purpose of that script is to monitor the folder for you, and as soon as it 'sees' the file in question, it will remove it. I'm going into the complete working of all of the parameters of the script. Note that on your Pentium 4, this guide will probably not work. Please wait for other P4 users to come up with a guide for you. What you'll probably need to do, is use Pacifist to remove System.kext and mach_kernel from the install package, and then run it (using the guide below). Can't promise anything though! For Core2Duo users: 0. Always backup your /System/Library/Extensions folder first. 1. Download the 10.5.3 Combo Update from the Apple website 2. run Terminal and type: sudo su then type your password then paste while sleep 1; do rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext; done and hit enter (nothing seems to happen but it is now monitoring your Extensions folder for the AppleInterCPUPowerManagement.kext file (folder)) You can, for safety, open a Finder window in the folder /System/Library/Extensions and look for that file (sort by filename of course), and you willl see it'll be removed automatically within a few seconds after it's created in step 3. 3. Run the MacOSXUpd10.5.3.pkg file in the MacOSXUpd10.5.3.dmg you just downloaded, and follow the instructions, but do not reboot at the end. 4. When the installation finishes, do not press reboot. Go back to your terminal window and hit ctrl+c. This will stop the script from running. In my case, there was some kind of error, but that's okay. 5. type nano /System/InstallAtStartup/scripts/1 A very simple text editor within Terminal will appear. Note you can't use your mouse to click to a certain line/point. 'Walk down' using your arrow keys to the line that contains "/System/Library/Extensions/Dont Steal Mac OS X.kext" In this line, replace Dont Steal Mac OS X.kext with dsmos.kext Now hit ctrl+o, enter, ctrl+x (this first saves the file, confirms it, then closes the editor). Type exit and close Terminal. 6. Return to the installer window and click reboot. If you need to restore some kexts, you can do that before or after rebooting, doesn't really matter. I recommend doing it after rebooting, to see which things still work (so you have the latest drivers for those). It will reboot, right up until the point that the screen would usually turn blue, then reboot again, and all should be well. I guess it has to reboot twice to execute the commands within the /System/InstallAtStartup/scripts/1 file we just edited, and has to reboot again after that. Hope this clears it up a little. LioNEXT
It looks multiple threads for 10.5.3 are growing up and makes things confusing. Please close this thread for responses or use only to discuss peripheral issues for this update. Instead, its better to use the 10.5.3 thread below to keep consistency (and avoid redundancy): http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=107340 Proper directions are also provided in that tutorial. rtomek
aasimbeck01: a: use either terminal or finder, or etc. means your favorite file browser b: 'while sleep 1' is a command that waits a second, then performs what is after the semicolon every second. You should open terminal and run this script before you update. c: that means edit the file, and change that one line of the file. You do not use r3d3. d: make a backup copy of your applesmbios, applehda, whatever other drivers you feel are important and put them back where you got them in case they were overwritten. e: smth is something. If you didn't forget to do something it will boot. f: if you have a P4 processor you are not using the vanilla kernel, so you have to wait for a hacked kernel and cannot use this process. starobrno1
It´s kind of cool you guys having troubles understanding us non English speakers this is something we experience all the time. And the really funny thing is it´s pretty much only cause of all the TV shows, movies, lyrics from songs etc. you´ve been bombarding us with throughout the years and ofcourse our schools teaching us english and lately the internet that we can have this conversation at all. Payback time looks like the English language is up for an adjustment towards how the international community needs it to function. Yeah it´s a pain in the but having to be able to understand and write in multiple languages, welcome to our reality .
