D-Link WUA-1340 works at first then "no device" problem

I have a D-link WUA-1340 usb 2.0 wireless-g adapter and am using kalyway 10.5.2 osx86 install.

I tried using the ralink.dmg file to install and run the driver for this device. It worked execpt for sometimes I had to unplug and replugin the adapter after restarts.

Unfortunately I had to reinstall OSX, and seeing that D-link had its own drivers for OSX for this adapter, I decided to try them (others on the forum seemed to like them better). Well, I installed the d-link driver, restart when the installer said to, and upon restart, it worked amazing and was just plain awesome.

However, when I restarted the computer again, the dlink software could not find the adapter and only reported "no device" as its status.

I tried repluging it in, reinstalling the driver, but nothing helped.

Finally, I just reinstalled my kalyway osx. Again, the driver worked upon the first restart after installation, but after another restart, the adapter was not found just as before.

I checked the system profiler, and it reported the device as being connected under the "usb" section. So OSX sees it, but the driver doesn't detect it.

I have tried different verisons of the ralink drivers, but nothing fixes the problem.

One thing that caused it to work only for one restart was to delete the file found at /system/library/extensions.mkext

this made the device work after a restart but not after another restart, so still need a fix.

My system is a p35-ds3P, q6600, 2 gb ram, 8600gt,

trying to use a d-link wua-1340 wireless g usb adapter.

If you need more info on my system or my question, just ask in a reply-thanks

If I can get this to work, my OSX86 / XP dual boot will be complete!

So please, any help or suggestions you can give me are welcome..... I'm desperate to fix this.

Thanks

*Update*

I did another reinstall of OSX. I installed the ralink.dmg (which is "RT71W_Ralink_Installer"). It worked fine after restarting the system. But then as before, after another restart, it can no longer detect the device.

--ALSO-- I noticed that now, half the time I start OSX, my usb drives will not mount. But if the drive is already connected to the computer when the computer starts up, the drives will mount.

--Could this be a part of my problem?(but the usb wirelss-g adapter simply can't be found no matter what I do)

Thanks again for any help.

*Update-2*

So i found this thread ( http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...33896&st=80 ), and tried some of the suggestions in it. Booting the system with the "-f" switch does make the wireless function. But once I restart the computer again (this time without that -f switch), the "no device" problem is again present. I am not sure what -f does.

If someone knows and can tell me why it would fix my problem, that would be helpful. Also, if this ends up being the only way for me to get the wireless to work...

1) how do I make OSX always boot with the "-f" switch?

2) will booting with -f everytime cause other problems? like does it reset every driver or something?

I hope there is a better solution than this, but at least now I know something works. again thanks for any help.

*Update-3*

Ok, so i figured out how to add the -f boot flag so that the system always loads with it. This does work and has solved my problem. But there must be a way to get this adapter to work with out that flag. ---for now though, it works.

I am going to try a fresh install of OSX with each of the drivers that I have found online for my WUA-1340. I will see if each has the same problem and if the -f flag fixes it.

Once I have firgured out the best driver and install method for my adapter, I will come back here and write up my method and some sort of guide. I noticed a lot of people with the same problem as me in the thread I mentioned before. (-f flag was only solution found so far). I'd like to thank the programmers and posters in that thread for providing so much information. I just wish there was a quick/easier way to sort through everything on these forums.

Thanks again,

PS- feel free to add any knowledge you may have about this subject that may help me or others with this "no device" / usb drives not mounting problem.

Alright, did a reinstall of Kalyway 10.5.2 and used the vanilla 9.2.2 kernal. This fixed the usb sorta.

Now, the usb does seem to work just fine, works on boot up, and on just pluging in while the system is already on (hotplugin).

However, the d-link wua-1340 usb wireless-g adapter still won't work after a restart and must be replugged in after every startup.

The D-link driver from their support website does work really well, and I am going to use it.

Now I know I can use this install, and with the " -f " boot flag everytime I don't have to replugin the adapter.

But there must be a better way!

---

I am going to try some things found in this thread http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=95789

It has a solution to some usb problems and a restart problem, which I had with the vanilla kernal installed.

Please add any info you may think could help me or others.
