Cyman Posted February 27, 2006 Share Posted February 27, 2006 Hi everyone, I was thinking about the possibility of changing the standard display which comes with the MacBook Pro with another one with UWXGA resolution. I am very sceptic that this would work, but I wanted to make sure and collect some of your opinions to this question. The reason why this is bothering me is that I am a bit dissatisfied with the relatively low resolution the 15" MacBook Pro offers, compared to what some other 15" PC notebooks offer. Sadly, I fear Apple wont release notebooks with 1920x1200 resolution any time soon. So maybe some of you know it better - if so, then well, just leave a post with your opinion! Ouch Posted February 27, 2006 Share Posted February 27, 2006 The problem is that the display decoder circuitry - which will be different for every unique panel - is normally hardwired onto the system board so you can't just go substituting any old display by connecting the data ribbon up to the mainboard as that ribbon isn't carrying a standard dvi or vga signal - its carrying the decoded signal that tells the display which pixels to turn off and on. ajw Posted February 27, 2006 Share Posted February 27, 2006 I have a MacBook Pro sitting right in front of me, and I thought that the resolution would be low, considering I was coming from a 1920x1200 Cinema Display G5, but honestly, I'm pleasantly surprised. The screen is very bright, and very clear. It's actually better quality than my Apple Cinema Display was, and the resolution is perfectly comfortable. If the resolution was any higher, it would be disproportionately high, which is not fun. Before you hack away at this beautiful product, do yourself a favor, and give the stock model a chance..It's really a device of brilliance. Cyman Posted March 11, 2006 Author Share Posted March 11, 2006 Well, I also hope for UWXGA resolution on future MBPs. At least the supposed to be released 17" MBP should support this resolution. I have a Dell 2405FPW and I got so used to this fine screen and its 1920x1200 that I can't imagine working on less - actually I would like to know if one can connect a MBP to an external monitor and display Mac OS X with the native resolution of this monitor (if it is superior to the 1440x900 the recent MBP offers). I've worked with LCD's in the past and the only thing that would change from one lcd to antoher would be the interface from the ribbon to the lcd itself.. the driving signal is the same.
