With the release of Mac OS X for x86 processors, Apple has chosen to not release source to key components of the OS, such as the kernel and all drivers. This means Darwin/x86 is dead in the water; Darwin/ppc has many closed source components and is a deprecated architecture. One has to wonder why Apple even bothers to release non-GPL'd source at all, if it is unwilling to cooperate with external developers to increase their return on investment and accept external bug fixes and features. dataworm Posted March 3, 2006 Share Posted March 3, 2006 One thing I don't understand about that x86 source VS PPC source... Is Apple keeping 2 source tree??? Normally you would make good code that will compile on both PPC and x86 in 1 single tree. If you look at the removed modules: Let's take this one as example: Apple3Com3C90x-10 This modules have been remove from the modules in x86. It's not just the src that is removed but the binary also... What is weard is that in PPC they include: AppleI386GenericPlatform-5 AppleI386PCI-6 AppleIntel8255x-18 AppleIntelPIIXATA-17 Does't make mutch sense to support Intel hardware on PPC...
