dahmooser (with me) has released an excellent set of flowcharts that easily explain how Mac OS X, and also Mac OSx86 work. These flowcharts explain everything, from how it boots, what parts the kernel and the kexts come into, what is layered on top of the Darwin core to make OS X what it is, and everything. For a beginner looking into learning the basics of OSx86 and OS X on the technical side, these charts will help a ton.

A ZIP containing the flowcharts in PDF and the original MS Visio project file (if you want to make changes) can be downloaded here.

If anyone has any corrections/updates please feel free to download and repost as needed by using the visio files.....which I think only a PC can open?!

The process of doing this flowchart truly helped me make sense of what's really going on, and I say that as an absolute noob!

Nice work you two. :( This should help give noobs a little spatial awareness if nothing else.

Very helpful and informative, thanks!

If it's not too much to ask, would you mind posting a flowchart of what happens during shutdown? (and sleep, restart, etc).

This would be helpful to those of us trying to troubleshoot why our systems are not shutting down, sleeping, restarting, etc.!

Thanks for your consideration!
