i don't game.. very rarely.

Occasional video editing. But No 3d work.

i use logic for music compositions and shall use 30" screen later. i may also expand to 3 monitor setup with perhaps 1 monitor being 30" or bigger. may be projector.

I have HD3000 onboard graphics with which i am running ML right now.

Now, to expand to dual monitor i need a graphics card. Now, the most important thing is that Graphics Card has to be absolutely Out of Box and Stable without any issues.. Absolutely NATIVE.. cos i suffered a lot with my earlier gpu which crashed very often hence making my system highly unstable.. I want a card with which i can take updates to ML without any issues.. and just focus on work.. Something which is like install and forget..

Which one you guys suggest with my kind of requirement?

i7 2600k
gigabyte z68xp-ud3
16 gb ram
650 watt psu
corsair carbite tower.. big cabinet..

When I click ignore it stuck.. on black window... And then when I try to install it again when I chose a drive there is with 5 gb less..

I am thinking about to buy a macbook pro retina display, but in a video, the guy said that the macbook pro retina is get hot very easy. Can anyone reject this? And can you please tell me the advantages and disadvantages of this macbook pro?

Boot camp Windows 7 failed to boot after shinking

My Windows 7 installation failed to boot after I shrink it with GParted.
I have already sync the GPT and MBR.
Everytime I select the Windows partition to boot, a black screen with a blinking cursor appears. If I have a bootable disk inserted in the SuperDrive, my Mac just starts booting up the disk after few ten seconds.

I have attempted many times using Windows Repair Disk to fix the problem. The repair console found the Windows installation.
However, bootrec /fixboot, bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /rebuildbcd these commands have been tried for numerous times but don't help.
chkdsk show no problem.
I have also tried Repair Disk with Disk Utility and it said the disk is normal.
I have tried rebuild the MBR with gdisk without success.

Does anyone have any idea to solve the problem? Thank you in advanced!!!

EDIT: I am tri-booting (Mac, Win 7, Ubuntu) before the shrink and it worked. It just breaks after this recent shrink.

Bios don't detect HDD

I don't know if this is the right forum, in that case sorry

First off, i set my HDD as following:

1° partition: 100mb windows partition
2° 50gb windows
3° 50gb MacOSX
4° 50gb MacOSX clone
5° 300gb NTFS for stuff

My bootable partition was the 3°, and by chamaleon I was able to boot both windows or macosx.

I uninstalled windows 8 and reinstalled windows 7, obviously it changed /boot flag to 1°.
I used to use gparted to switch the flag back to 3°, but this time I tried with the diskpart and set 3° as active (aka /boot).

Now the HDD isn't bootable anymore, BIOS doesn't detect it. I plugged the HDD in another Windows PC by USB. It doesn't work: i can't see no disk nowhere! Nor in Disk Manager.

I tried to use gparted and plug the HDD AFTER gparted was running. I was able to see the disk and each partition as they used to be (that makes me think that there's any "physical" issue).

I would like not to format the disk (however even though I would do it, i can't because it's not detected anywhere).

What can I do? Can someone help me please?

Pixelmator 2.2 crash

Hi.

I'm a newbie so bare with me:)
I have Lion 10.7.2 installed on may pc with NVEnabler for graphics card (because Graphics Enabler doesn't work) and Pixelmator 2.2 is crashing on startup. Older versions of Pixelmator are crashing also. All other apps i tried are working fine (Adobe cs6 and Apple apps for example).
To be honest Pixelmator is one of the main apps that I use at work so it would be nice to have it on home computer.

My graphic card is showing as "Unknown NVidia graphic card 1024mb" but everything works. Could this be a source of problem or something else?
If it is, is there a way of fixing it?

I managed to make my nVidia card show in "about this mac" with right name and Pixelmator is still crashing. So i guess that wasnt a problem.

Narrowing down motherboard selection

Hello!
I'm currently in the process of finalizing my build for Mountain Lion. I have a i7 3770k, and I can't decide which motherboard would be the best choice for me.
I don't care about the size, or built in WiFi. I just want everything else to work OOB. I'm perfectly fine with flashing BIOS, sacrifices to the osx86 lords, etc.
I'm looking at these choices:

- MSI Z77MA-G45
  - I heard that other users had problems with the onboard sound working right.

- Gigabyte GA-Z77N-WIFI
  - Haven't heard of any problems with this one... maybe USB 3.0 port issues?

- Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H
  - Overclock issues? Heard it wasn't super 100% compatible, but an install package is available... not sure what doesn't work after that

- GIGABYTE GA-Z77MX-D3H
  - No idea how this would be better/worse

My budget for a motherboard is about ~$130. I would like overclocking, but not a deal breaker. I would just like something hassle free and stable.
I read somewhere that OSX might be incompatible with certain ram? Is this true? I thought any mobo compatible ram would work just fine.

Is 10.4 Tiger is OK to installed in this kind of specs. I have tried 10.6 to 10.7 but it went to unsucceesfull installation, after installation it keeps hanging on Apple Logo and asking me to restart my Machine all of them used to be. Badly needed a Mac OS for my home based job! Please help me. And if ever I went to command something for start up it hangs on System Uptime In Nanoseconds please help!

Setting active partition & default boot - very puzzled

I'm in the process of migrating from Lion to Mountain Lion, and simultaneously from HDD to SSD for my system disk.

My SSD has two partitions, one with Lion, one with Mountain Lion (ML), the HDD also has two partitions, also with Lion and ML - I cloned the HDD onto the SSD, and will remove the HDD once I have everything working.

In the BIOS I have set the boot order so it boots from SSD first. This works fine.

Once the bootloader has started, I can manually select Lion or ML, from either the SSD or the HDD. All work fine.

I can select which OS boots by default by setting the Default Partition flags in org.Chameleon.boot.plist on the SSD Lion partition. This works fine, but implies that the SSD Lion partition is set active.

I want to eventually retire the Lion partitions, which means I want to boot fully from the ML partition. But I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make the Lion partition active.

I'm also struggling to relate the output of "diskutil list" and the partition tables I can extract from fdisk.

Why don't the partitions listed in diskutil appear in the fdisk output?

If there's no active partition, why is my system booting just fine?

Very puzzled, and I don't want to start messing around with partition tables etc until I understand what's going on...

I want to let you know about a competition I am running from Laser Hive Facebook page
Basically I am looking for the best videos of people installing my stuff and in response to that I am offering prizes.

I am looking for the BEST video instructions from my customers on how to fit one of our kits.

The winners will get a kit of their choice (you just pay the shipping) or a small hot swap enclosure (3 drive) or a custom designed laser part.

Entrants agree to their videos being posted on the Laser Hive website/facebook site and the Laser Hive YouTube channel and the winners will have their videos used as a resource for our instruction packs.

Migrating virtual disks to new datastore

So I've run into a bit of an issue that I need help figuring out.

I have a Mountain Lion Guest running on my ESXi 5.1 host. The OS is located on a local datastore, but then I have about 6.5TB worth of virtual disks attached to this machine that are stored on an NFS datastore. I would like to migrate all of these disks to a different datastore.

Now I know I can usually go an just migrate the disks individually, but Vcenter wont allow me to do this because OS X is not supported(?). Does any one know of a way that I can accomplish this? Thanks!

Is there a bootloader program like Chameleon/Chimera/Clover that can run on the Windows 8 Partition?

Like the title says, I was wondering if anyone knows of a "bootloader" that works on the Windows 8 partition of my dual boot system.

My OSX SSD cannot see the hardware RAID array that Windows 8 is installed on, so I thought perhaps a bootloader on the windows side could see the SSD that I have 10.8.3 installed on?

EasyBDC does not see the OSX drive and Acronis OS Selector does not run on Windows 8.

I thought I saw something about about a version of Chameleon for Windows but can't find it anywhere.

After a few months of use you may notice that your Mac OS X installation is not a fast and efficient as it once was. Mac Keeper is a Application for Mac OS X that optimizes the system in 4 specific areas which are Security, Data Control, Cleaning and Optimization. Testing Configuration:

Installation:
Installation was very simple after downloading the latest version found here and was no different then any other package installation. Within 5 minutes the install was complete and I was ready to start using the application.

Interface:
Mac Keeper has a user-friendly interface that will be very easy to use and to navigate. On the left are the tools that the application provides for various tasks and each providing a brief description of what each tool does, a link to the user manual, as well as user tutorial videos that are YouTube based but play in the application. All of this information is helpful and makes the user aware what and how the tool is to be used before using it. On the right side of the application there are 24/7 Customer Support information as well as feedback reporting.

Using The Application

After looking over the interface I performed the scan.  The timer was a not accurate at all and took around 5 minutes to complete the scan from start to finish.

During the scan the application used a lot of my system resources and started to bog down the system. The picture below is from Activity Monitor showing the high CPU usage during the scan.

Once the scan was complete the Cleaning Section showed an astounding about of files to be removed from my system.  3.5 GB of files shows how even a lightly used system can create a large amount of junk files.

After the fixes were applied I was asked to enter my Serial Number, which I did.  Mac Keeper allows you to install and scan your system before having to purchase the application. This allows users to have a hand on experience prior.

After activating the software Mac Keeper completed in fixing the issues that it had found and I began using the system. First thing I noticed was how fast finder was working and how launching applications was faster as well. CS6 launch time was dramatically improved seeing a 50% faster load time.  Overall Mac Keeper was proving to live up to my expectations and creditable in regards to there claims.

I then continued using the software once a day to see if the system performance gains could be retained. By the end of the week it was clear that the gains were still there and that Mac Keeper was doing exactly what the claims were.

Conclusion:
Over all Mac Keeper is a solid optimization tool, which was easy to use and smooth in the implementation of the application. Mac Keeper did live up to my expectations. However the system files it removes could be done manually so if you were looking at this application just for that then I would not recommend Mac Keeper.  For users who want a worry free quick solution to optimization of their Mac OS X installation then this is exactly the software you need.

Hi everyone, I normally run Windows 8 on a RAID0 array of 2 SSDs. I have a third SSD installed that is blank so I decided to install MacOSX on it.
I disconnected the 2 SSDs in RAID and installed using one of the well known distros on the third SSD, and it works great!

So now I wanted to have a bootloader show up which allows me to choose between Windows and MacOS... but no matter what the RAID array isn't seen. It boots directly into MacOS.

I tried Chameleon, Chimera and Clover, but none of them see the Windows RAID array. And when MacOS boots, it reports that the 2 SSDs in the array can't be read. I tried EasyBCD on the Win side and it doesn't boot into OSX (just shows a black screen with a blinking cursor).

However, if I set my BIOS boot priority to the RAID array, Windows boots fine, and if I set it to the third SSD it will boot MacOS with those two errors.

It seems that OSX and OSX Bootloaders cannot see my hardware RAID. If there isn't a solution for that, is there possibly a bootloader for the windows side that I could install that would see the SSD with OSX on it? I thought I read something about Chameleon for Windows, but I can't find a recent version.

System Specs (MacOS detects everything just fine):
i7 3770K @4.5 GHz
16 GB Corsair Dominator RAM @ 2400MHz
Gigabyte Z77-UP7 motherboard
Dual GTX 690s in quad SLI

I tried deleting some loops using Finder, but when I reindex my loop library in Logic, I enter my password then the loops go blank, and I have to restart logic to get my loops bhack in the library.. (including the loops I deleted using finder)

How can I re-index my library? It doesn't seem to matter where on the disk my loops are, Logic just goes blank after clicking "Reindex loops"

OK, so long story short, I'm trying to create a stress script for some work

that script will play up to 12 quicktime videos at any one point. It can organise them all via tiles based on the # of windows and thats all fine. But I also want them to use quicktime x's presentation feature to set them all to full screen.

I have a ghetto script that fullscreens them all very poorly, but I'd really prefer something more efficient, as well as getting them to close.

I am a obj-c/c++ programmer. In the past my macbook pro got stollen allready two times. The biggest problem is that when the harddrive is removed, the anti-theft software is gone. I am researching right now if there's a possiblity to modify my firmware and add a plist file that's installed when the OS is installed.
I want to know if EFI (where all the plists are) is in the firmware and how to modify that. I am thinking to make a plist file in the EFI of a mac that sends data to a server when asked. And I want to know if there's allready some research about this topic.

Hi everyone,

I am faced with the (almost classic) boot0:GPT boot0:error problem but my case is somewhat more complicated. You see, the problem appears on a former dual boot Win7/ OSX machine with both OSs on the same physical volume.

When I say former, I mean that for some time I had it dual boot through Chameleon, but at some point I decided to ditch the OSX partition and return the free space to the boot partition of Windows using GParted. All was working well for about a year or so, until about 2 months ago, when all of a sudden I was faced with the boot0:GPT boot0:error message.

After searching through the forums most solutions, including the boot1h file solution, assume that there was still an OSX installation present on the disk whereas in my case there isn't one anymore. For all intents and purposes, this is now a single boot machine with only Windows on it. In any case, I used Universal Boot CD which contains a Linux distro with various tools to fix and restore disk issues. In particular, I used the TestDisk tool to try and locate and recover the missing Windows boot partition. This was unsuccessful even after a detailed scan, so I gave up, formatted the boot partition and re-installed Win7 64 from scratch and the problem seemed fixed.

That was until yesterday when the same error appeared again. The entire drive space appears unallocated in GParted where there should be 3 partitions C, D and E.

Can anyone propose a solution that will permanently fix the problem (i.e. completely remove any traces of an OSX bootloader) because I don't think re-installing windows all over again will fix the problem once and for all.

Hello All,

I recently came into possession of a MBP with a broken hinge/bezel and decided to throw Mountain Lion and Ubuntu on it.

Mountain Lion install was the easy part, took a bit longer than expected, never the less done and over with.

I installed rEFIt
Partitioned my 500GB drive (100GB for Ubuntu)
Used unetbootin on 4 different USB drives (Sandisk 4GB, PNY 4GB, noname 1GB, Corsair 8GB) as I read that Mac hardware doesn't like USB drives often. Got 4 bootable USB drives (working on a separate Win laptop)
Burned the x64 ISO to a DVD as well just for safe measure.

Restart into the rEFIt menu, run partition tool, and choose Boot Legacy OS from HD/CD/DVD/"ubuntu usb" etc whatever the media is and every time this is done, I get a "missing OS" message and a blinking cursor.

I even tried booting the boot img and get to the grub screen choose any one of the 2 install options as well as the live option and just sit staring at a blank screen. Let it sit for hours on one drive and still nothing.

Tried holding C to boot off CD instead of rEFIt, cleared NVRAM, reset SMC, MacOSx works flawlessly. Linux installer just will not load.

What am I doing wrong here? I cant possibly have THAT bad of luck with USB drives. Thanks for the help.

Hi all,

Another project in progress for me since last week is this one.

At the moment it feels like I may have bitten off too much.

Background

I've done a few Cubes already, the last couple used the original CUbe heatsink to cool them and worked well.

This time I wanted to go for something different and I took it on because I already had the parts for it here.

Bits being re-used from other builds are:

Zotac Z77 wifi board
Corsair RAM,
Corsair H80,
160W PicoPSU,
mSATA drive,
Old Cube bits.

New parts:
i7 3770k

I'll admit this is a bit of a silly power crazed build. Having done a Cube with an i5 2500K I wanted to up the Geekbench scores and see whether the unused H80 I had could be used in a Cube.

Of course, it couldn't be fully enclosed, so the first thing to happen was this:

No laser cutting here, just good old dremeling - this case eats dremel disks!!!

The discolouring is as this particular old case originally had my old Mini in a Cube inside it that my wife has had for a number of years. It was re-sprayed white at one stage and after being knocked about by me it now needs stripping and painting again.

This great big hole is for the radiator to expel heat out the back of the Cube - the plan being that from the front view the Cube looks pretty much normal.

The same Cube case had a cut down casing and was used on its side, so I cut that case up too:

Here you see it and the removed front plate of the Cube sitting in it as a trial.

After this, I did a dummy fit up with an old ITX board inside the Cube cage:

Shown here is a Noctua 120 PWM fan (for quiet cooling) mounted onto the radiator of the H80 and held by the original hard drive cage.

As a first fit I was happy that this would be a good place for rad mounting and with a bit of luck just the one 120 fan might do the job if I can get a good air flow in from top and bottom of the Cube. If I am not so lucky I can put another 120 fan on the outside at the back of the Cube and make it removeable.

So, as the drive cage is normally front mounted and I want to move it to the back (and Apple did not make these things symetrical) I needed to do some mod.s to the cage and the inner can.

Basically, the Cube switch is usually over the motherboard side but is a squeeze there. So I ended up spinning the Cube and re-cutting the inner cage.

So first job was cutting another hole for the touch switch and making some fixings for it -using my favourite thing of the moment rivet nuts.

Needed to do the same thing to the can:

The hole was cut using a hole saw and turned out better than I had hoped (one slip costs a lot of time!).

I went on to cut the tubes from the H80 - as there was no way it would fit with the long pipes - and drained the fluid.

Help me win a ukulele photo contest I entered a few days ago!  The theme was "anything related to or involving a ukulele", as it's sponsored by Hawaii Music Supply.

As a college student, I could never afford the instrument they're giving away as the grand prize (a Kamaka ukulele) and so winning this contest would mean the world to me both as an avid photographer who hasn't had much time lately to indulge in the hobby due to school work (which thankfully will end soon!) and as someone who has now played ukulele for a few months, loves it, and would appreciate the grand prize immensely.

I entered the contest pretty last-minute and know my masking isn't spot-on, but I'm pretty happy with my idea, the composition, and the general result.  I took 6 images (two 3-image HDRs one with high depth of field and the other with low depth of field), and combined the two HDRs with some masking to keep the strings sharp all the way up the fretboard (as well as the outline of the body).

If this helps you, in 10.4.8 I applied combo patch and my notebook specs (2002)

My primary concern here is the CPU and the GPU because I'll only be using the integrated GPU, and in 3220, OSX doesn't natively support Intel HD 2500. Are there workarounds here? Or do I need to buy a discrete GPU? (I don't like buying underpowered stuff because I'd like to maximize the lifespan of this PC as much as possible so I chose a 650 Ti if ever I would need to buy a GPU.

Another concern of mine is the SSD which will be the boot drive of both OS. I'm not sure of its format so I'd like to know if I can install OSX to it afterwards.

Last is the motherboard, I'd really like a cheaper alternative but I opted for a Gigabyte board because most said that it's easier to deal with. Does it apply to all Gigabyte boards or only those specific boards? Also, if I could buy a cheaper board and modify some files or something so I could save money. (Although this would be my first time building it but I really would like to save more and do more tinkering that the other way around.)

I forgot about the RAM. Are the RAMs compatible? Or do I need to buy a Corsair kit? Because I see Corsairs all the time in the buyer's guide. Sorry if it's a dumb question, just making sure.

So that's my problem. To sum it all up, I'll be installing ML, Mint and/or Ubuntu in the future. For now, I'll just start with Windows 8, but I want to make sure that all my parts are compatible for ML, Mint and Ubuntu, so that I won't have compatibility problems in the future. I'm also worried about the order of installation because it seems that Mac OSX should be the first one to be installed and I don't want to go to the trouble of backing up my files and reinstalling Windows 8 when I install the other 3 OS. This would be the most probable order. Windows 8 then Ubuntu (because I'll probably need it for my studies), then OSX then Mint (if I still decided to install it). And I plan to use the same SSD for all of the 3 (or 4) OSes. I saw some forum posts and some had trouble with Windows and OSX when they installed Linus on the same drive so I'm worried about it too.

Don't recommend me buying an i3-3225 as I tried to search for it everywhere but I found nothing.

This is my first time building a hackintosh. Actually, this is my first time building a PC as I'm still a 16 years old boy, going to college this coming June. I'll be taking up an Engineering course so I'd do a lot of programming in Ubuntu, that's why I feel that I need to familiarize myself with it, not only at school but also at home.

Ok so I am only 13 don't think im an idiot I passed test one and test two. So I am looking at buying this stuffs listed in the picture, but as I am only 13 I have an extremely limited budget . Dual-boot two OSX on one Drive

So I finally installed SL on one HDD with ML. Now I can either boot with MBR record (Chimera on ML) or with bootable iso image (i*Boot - SL). But I want to install bootloader on Snow Leopard too. The problem is you know - how to handle which of the 2 OS to load? Using either bootable image or MBR do the trick but I don't know if my Extra directory (I manually created on my Snow Leopard partition) is loaded. Any ideas?

I have made a modified installation disc according to Jowie's guide,and I tried running Chameleon 2.1svn-r1921.pkg to emulate the 64 bit environment,but whenever I go through the windows installion I get to where I partition the drive,then it creates the 200mb space for system files,then it throws up an error code and I cant continue??? Sorry if this is not the right place to ask. I work in a computer shop and recently I sold a cheap noname USB keyboard to an Apple user. I don't know which model his Mac is, but he told me it originally had MacOS 9 installed and he upgraded to MacOS X 10.4 Tiger which is the maximum supported by the hardware. The new keyboard works fine, except for the numeric keypad. It is always off and I wonder if there is any way to enable it so he can type numbers from there. I went to his place, had a look in Settings/Keyboard but could not find anything relevant. I also tried Google, but I didn't manage to find anything useful. I hope you know which setting or key combination or third-party utility can enable the numpad in a non-apple keyboard at a real Mac. If the keyboard where Microsoft or Logitech, I could try the respective driver, but as I already said this is noname.

Any help appreciated.

I will start my 2nd G5 Mod in the near future.
For this project I will use the knowledge I got from my first mod and all the great inspiration from you!

My plans are:
- almost inaudible cooling
- keep the components dust free
- two 3,5" HDDs + two 2,5" SSDs in the upper part
- 120mm fan in the back
- mATX MB
- two 140mm fans in the front with simple detachable dust filters. Easy access after opening the G5 side panel
- no blocking of the airstream -> better GPU cooling -> quieter cooling (biggest issue of my first mod, maybe I should reactivate the water cooling)
- mod a PSU to fit inside the G5 PSU case

What I already have:
- 2x 140mm Enermax Cluster fans (front)
- 2x 140mm fan dust filters
- 1x 80mm Enermax Cluster fan (HDD Tray)
- 1x 120mm eLoop-P (back)
- Lian Li HDD tray for two SATA drives, I hope this can fit @ the G5 HDD tray location

For the two 140mm fans in the front I will use the acrylic glass and create a 4 layer front panel.
The acrylic glass will be laser cutted at my local university for free (FabLab + bring your own material + bring the vector graphic files = you can make an appointment for 1h and use every machine).

The first two layers will keep the dust filters in place, which is also hold my four magnets/filter.
The third and fourth layer will contain the magnets for the filters, more magnets to apply some stability to front by holding on the PSU case and the screws to attach the 140mm fans.

The second layer will be opend to the accessible G5 side and by that the filters can be removed.

The fan panel is done. The laser cutting itself was extremly fast!

I made a video of the cutting, but unfortunately the quality is not good, because of reflections and the black material.

The result of all plates is exactly as I imagined them.
The only downside is that I made too many "safety dimensions" (like +0,5mm extra cutting) to make sure it fits for sure.
