Hi all,

I have a computer running in my bedroom as a all-in-one server. It's specs are:

Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition R2
800 Mhz Intel PIII
384 MB of SD RAM (100 FSB)
NVIDIA MX 4000
20 GB HDD
30 GB HDD

It is ancient, I know, but it has done the job so far.

So as I said, it does everything. It is currently my webserver (apache), my ftp server (servu), my home server, my uTorrent server (managed by WebUI), my Print server, and even my Mulitmedia Station for my bedroom (connected to TV via SVIDEO).

The question is: Do I need an antivirus, and if so which one will be suitable? AVG, Avast!, other?

If files are being transfered onto your computer then you will need an anti-virus. I believe AVG is a good app. An alternative may be antivir (completely free for personal use).

At the first looking, I thought about Nod32 by Eset but that isn't free (if you see..). But AVG make a great job of titan and free . Flawlessly, you had Kaspersky very hot stuff!

Actually you don't need one, but if the server is idle anyways, it's not a bad decision.

Just by being saved on the disk, a virus does nothing...only when you execute it. It's more important to keep your server up-to-date. Especially for the httpd and ftpd.

Well, I use it every night as a Media Extender. Primarily to watch baseball games via P2P video programs (i.e. Sopcast). That is the whole reason I am a little scared because a lot of those online video P2P programs are made in Asian and may have spyware, trojans, and etc. built in.

I guess I will probably go AVG because of how little resources it uses, but I still think would put a strain on the server because of its lack of powerful hardware.
