QUOTE (systemgeek @ Aug 11 2008, 12:55 PM)

So over the past 2 weeks now I have done about 15 successful installs on my Dell XPS m1330. And at least 3 times that many failed installed.
BTW, to whom ever it was who asked above regarding Speed Step on the M1330. For some in explained reason it got it working using the Dell Package 35b. This also got my Dell Wireless 1395 card working and I think even my keyboard/trackpad.
Anyway, I now feel that I am in a place to make a few observations. (Feel free to flame me if you want.)
1. For my hardware OSS86 should be considered alpha ware at best. From reading all these posts I can see that for some people OSX86 is as solid as a rock. I wish that was me. But then I got into computers and managing systems because companies needed people to fix things when stuff did not run "Solid as a rock".
My problems seem to be that SOMETIMES when I reboot the external screen kicks in on my laptop. But most times I get the laptop LCD. Also, making small changes to even the kexts can cause the laptop to not work again on reboot.
2. From reading all these posts and trying it my self I REALLY understand why Microsoft OSes suck so badly and Mac OSX is so solid. The amount of effort need to make one driver work is tremendous. Multiply that by the number of devices and it is staggering. It really makes you wonder how Microsoft can even run.
So now I have a running system but I am scared of it failling. My confidence in the system is not very high and I have about 99% of it running fine. And since I want to use this machine for work I am doublly scared. I am really concidering going back to Vista or maybe retry Ubuntu again.
Before anyone says anything I do want to thank everyone who has contributed to this web site. The information has been very usefull and helpfull. And I really want to thank all the people who have worked hard at bringing OSX86 to the average pc. You all have done an amazing job.
Just my 2 cents...
Louis
I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say here, it's a bit convoluted and shows that you haven't really grasped the true nature of the problems you are experiencing.
Your External Monitor problem could be due to an incorrect NVCAP setting. What method are you using to utilize your displays? is it an Nvidia card? NVinject kext? EFI GFX Strings?
If you're scared of your system failing, use an OS that fully supports your hardware

It just sounds to me like you want a stable setup that you can rely on, maybe if you love the Mac so much you should save up and invest in a Macbook, that way you would not need to worry about anything apart from the possibility of hardware faults occuring

OSx86 isn't for everyone as it requires maintanance, driver updates, checking back to see if the latest Apple Software Update is compatible etc. A lot of these problems have been squashed because of EFI injectors, but yes, there are still incompatibilities. Things are a lot better now than they ever were though, and so long as Apple doesn't do anything radical, we should see the relationship between Generic PC hardware and Mac OS X get closer.

Yes I want a stable machine. No I do not want to purchase a Mackbook. Too much money for to little.
As for my problems. I have two right now.
1. Switching to an external monitor. My card is an Intel GMAx3100. I have used the kext from AppleX3100_QE_CI and from gmax3100_kexts. Both work on the laptop display. However, when I plug in an external monitor at best I see colored lines. If I switch back to the laptop I get the same result on the laptop. I am running EFI. I built my system using iAKTOS 4i and wingrunr21's method
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=119654 from wingrunr21.
2. The other problem is intermittent. Periodically when I boot up I will not see any folders, docs and HD icon on my desktop. When I open up Finder and go to my Desktop I also do not see anything there. But if I reboot every thing seems to come back.
I have not decided to quit trying to make this work yet so if anyone has any good ideas I would be happy to try them.
Thanks,
Louis

First off thanks to everyone for their hardwork, I am running a m1530 with everything working perfectly except for two things:
1) not a big deal, but I noticed sleep works if I am running on battery but if I am plugged into a power source sleep causes the computer to restart
2) After sleep, audio through speakers works but the headphone jacks will not work

macgirl, I have created a long tutorial on installation for an XPS 1330 if you would like to link to it from the first page:

I have an xps m1530 with leopard 10.5.2 installed through leo4all. The initial install and first boot work perfectly. When i turn it off and turn it back on later, the trackpad and keyboard do not work. I do not have an external keyboard and really could use some help.
Did you do anything to the machine when you first booted it?
QUOTE (shavkatov @ Aug 11 2008, 07:13 AM)

I get the same "Still waiting for the root device". By the way i see that my dvd rom halts on booting install, i suppose it's the problem, what can i do? :=)
Please try a newer version of iAtkos. The problem is most likely with IOAHCI or IOATA.

I'm back on my m1330 with OS X. My black Macbook was just to powerful for me to use, so I sold it.
Anyways, When I set my laptop to go to sleep, it sleeps... but when it wakes up, the screen doesn't turn on. I thought I applied all of the modified sleep kexts/installers on this forum... does anyone know what it could be?
Thanks
EDIT: Oh, my USB ports dont work... I think I installed something for sleep like USBHEI
I had the same problem with my usb ports this weekend. I found the kext in a backup created by the Dell Package 35b. The kext you want to find is IOUSBFamily.kext and you need to move it back to /System/Libarary/Extentions. I found mine at /DellLaptops/Backup/IOUSBFamily.kext.

I followed multiple guides including wingurns and no matter what I do on my xps m1330 using iAtkos 4i and disabling core, ata etc. I get it to boot I see a blue leopard screen for about a second then the display completely turns itself off, it goes black. I removed the NVDAResman.kext like suggested but it still did not work. I also used -x boot mode and I do not have a nvdia graphics on my laptop, just the standard internal intel graphics.

Try removing all graphics related kexts and see if it boots properly. Also, what does the -v boot mode tell you?

You could remove the PS2 kexts so that the trackpad isn't even detected.
Jake123, did you ever get your sleep working properly? If so, what did you do? I have the same "black screen" problem as you.

If you want to remove just the trackpad driver remove this kext:
/System/Library/Extensions/ApplePS2Controller.kext/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePS2Mouse.kext
You should be able to restore the ApplePS2Controller.kext from your installation DVD with no problems.

I did run the dell laptops post installer package but other than that absolutely nothing. I ran the post installer and then did what it said to do and then shut it off til later. When i got back on, only the external mouse works. The keyboard and trackpad do not work. I thought it was a problem with the post installer but i reinstalled the OS and then then manually patched the sound kext. The only other problem i could think of is that i installed it to a portable HD but it still doesnt make sense that it works the first time but not at all after.

What you have to do is to edit the file AppleHDA.kext/Contents/Info.plist and there find

<key>Boost</key>

Hi Everyone,
I've just followewd wingrunr21 (thanks wingrunr21, great effort :-)) m1330 tutorial and amangedto get everything working bar these documented issues:
sleep/shutdown/restart
inbuilt mic input
auto mute on headphone input (can mute manually through system prefs)
There is only one problem and it i haven't seen spoken about here and that is an iTunes anomaly that won't let me edit a smart playlist.
Can anyone confirm this behavior and does anyone know the cause or a solution?

Hi all, I've been browsing all over this thread and others for a way to fix sleep. Is there a way? I don't care much for speedstep; could someone walk me through removing speedstep and making sleep work?
I'm on a M1330, iAtkos4i install. Btw I'm using NVInject for my Geforce 8400M
Also, has anyone figured out how to make the headphone jack play sound without having the speakers play sound at the same time?

I've recently installed osx on my vostro 1400. My graphics card is an nvidia 8400 and I've used Punk92's installer to get it to recognize my card and give me my native resolution. I'm wondering if there is anyway for me to tweak things so that things aren't running slow and choppy, i.e. my dock and windows closing/popping up. I've googled and googled and searched the forums but I can't find anything specifically related to smoothing out my graphics.
Thanks a lot!

Ok, I've made the info.plist changes that Superhai suggested, and now the system does go to sleep and wakes, but the screen is blank and stays blank upon waking. Using ToH 9.2 kernel. Vanilla Kernel doesn't allow sleep at all (screen goes black but system is still running). This is a 10.5.4 iAtkos install. Help!
EDIT: I got the 9.2sleep kernel from the Kalyway disc and sleep finally works. Woohoo!

Hey all!
So far I have everything running very smoothly on my Dell M1530 using Kalyway 10.5.2 installer, and upgraded to 10.5.4
I'm very impressed that most things seem to work (wireless with a Dell card, bluetooth, etc) but one thing I can't seem to get to work every time is the audio.
I know it's a well known problem that the audio doesn't always work on boot, but when it does work it'll stay working until I shut down. There have been suggestions that putting the system to sleep then waking it will fix the audio but I am unable to sleep with this install.
I've been trying different ways of booting (shutting down completely, removing the AC cord and reinserting it before boot) and trying to adjust the sound before OSX fully boots to see if it'll jumpstart the audio but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
I am using the STAC9228_0x83847616.zip file from the original post and was wondering if anyone knows of an updated/better one that works on boot, or another way of getting sound to work without having to shutdown and reboot until it works?
Thanks!

Sure thing, that clicking sound was driving me crazy too!
First, download hdapm from
http://mckinlay.net.nz/files/hdapm.dmgAfter mounting the image, you'll see the two important files:
hdapm and
hdapm.plistCopy
hdapm to
/usr/local/bin and
hdapm.plist to
/Library/LaunchDaemons to have it start automatically. Reboot and that's it! No more clicking sound. If you copy hdapm to any other location, you'll have to modify hdapm.plist to reflect that location.
Please note that this will make your hard drive operate at full speed. I personally haven't noticed any adverse side effects, but your mileage may vary.

My experience wasn't as easy as that. I've manually tested hdapm and sometimes it worked and sometimes not.
To try if works, run this:
./hdapm disk0 max
where disk0 is your hdd. (change it to disk1, disk2, etc, as needed)
Yo should see something like this:
disk0: SAMSUNG HM160HI
Setting APM level to 0xfe: Success
if this doesn't show, then hdapm may not work for you all the time. You may see something like this:
Setting APM level to 0xfe: FAILED: APM not supported
Personally, i've googled arround and found declunk. This is a program that reads and writes a file every X seconds, in order to prevent hdd from stopping. I've setted X to 2 seconds. After messing arround with this issue, i found that hdapm sometimes failed and sometimes didn't. My solution? I've wrote a script that runs hdapm and if it fails, it runs declunk.
CODE
#!/bin/sh
/usr/local/bin/hdapm disk0 max
if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
echo "HDAPM started"
else
echo "DECLUNK started"
/usr/local/bin/declunk --interval 2
fi
If i open Console and check the logs, sometimes HDAPM runs, and sometimes DECLUNK is running.

Well, a little guide to boot on retail installation wthout cd/usb.
At least, you still need a CD to boot the Retail DVD.
Requirement: - A Retail Mac OSX installation DVD
- A CD to Boot installation DVD
- A HDD partitioned as GUID
- files below
To do: ( Bootable ISO + Installer *: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=97966)- Burn .iso on a CD;
- Boot this CD;
- When Darwin prompt appear, eject CD and put Mac OS X Leopard Retail DVD;
- Install System.
Method 1: Once installation finished, you need to install chameleon on your system disk. Download Chameleon bootloader, then replace "boot" by the one from "additional files" below ("boot" comes from original Iso project). Install it.
Method 2: (another bootable system needed): download "OSX86Tools Utility". Then, right click on app —> show package contents —>Contents —>Resources;
Replace "boot" file with the one from "additional files" below. Run OSX86Tools, select "Install EFI/Run FDISK", "Reinstall Source files then "run script" and install chameleon on the Retail system partition.
Method 3: Install Chameleon then copy "boot" into your root folder.
- Unpack "extra" archive below into the root Retail system folder.
- Install NVinject and ClamShellDisplay in System/Library/Extensions/
- Eject CD, Reboot your Retail System and Voilà, (almost) unmodified system with easy boot kexts manipulations.
This also works for patched DVD's (Iatkos, kalyway...). You don't need to boot with ISO, just add Extra folder with kexts then Mod Chameleon; you will be able to update your system safely from official Apple updates.
Known Issues: - After 10.5.3 update; Nvinject or NVKush should be placed in System/Library/Extensions/ (or no QE)
- ClamShellDisplay don't works until you place it in System/Library/Extensions/
- AppleHDA still need to be patched, just reinstall it after updates (if you use an installer, remove ALCInject or HDAEnabler from System/Library/Extensions/ folder).
- If Airport is displayed as not configured, go to System Preferences—>Network—> Airport; Advanced—>TCP/IP—> Renew DHCP Lease.
Special Thanks to Chun-Nan and SuperHai, who created vanilla's compatibles kexts.

Using this method to try and do a retail DVD install on my new 1330. I've not been able to actually boot into the installer yet, the laptop hangs somewhere around initializing the LAN port (not connected), but I didnt get a picture of it yet at its hang point.
My question is, in order to do this type of install on the 1330, do I need to be changing BIOS settings for anything, such as turning off AHCI mode, or speedstepping or force a cpus=1 or anything etc? Right now the BIOS are sitting at the default from Dell (version A12).
I was able to get iAtkos v4i to install on the machine, and the drive is already formatted GUID style. I am trying to install RETAIL over this, as I prefer retail installs. Plus my retail DVD is old, 10.5.(0 or 1), does that make a difference? Just looking for any pointers from anyone that happened to do a retail install using the method above and was successful.
M1330 specs: T8300 cpu, 4gb ram, Nvidia 8400GS 128mb, Dell 1505 wireless, Dell 355 Bluetooth, after-market hard drive (so I could return it in original condition if I wanted). I dont think there were any other options/specs out of the norm.

Ok, found an easier way altogether.
Since I couldn't boot my retail DVD (REALLY bummed about that). I went ahead and installed my old kalyway 10.5.1 disk.
Once up I did an apple software update and rebooted.
Running apple vanilla kernel. Had to use sonotone's dell post installer to get sound and proper video.
Question:
Am I running 32 bit or 64 bit?
I read something once that I'm supposed to boot with -64 and I have been doing it ever since. Was that a good aprils fools or am I running 64bit?

Thanks!

For me, I start my system just using the battery and after a minute my sound clicks on, then I plug in the power and I'm good to go! Putting my system to sleep also gets the sound going, but also causes my m1530 to overheat and shut off. Hope that helps!

Hey guys, I installed via iATKOS 2.0 on my XPS M1530 after the install my fan was not running, ever..
I used this bundle and it fixed my problem, I just want to put this up for anyone that runs into a problem like me.
Thanks.

Did anyone get it to work using a retail dvd and that provided boot123 ISO? The disc hangs early on after booting and doesn't even get close to the installer for me.

Not supported, most of us have purchased another WiFi card and plugged it into the spare slot next to the existing card

My wireless card is a: "Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-card"
It worked out of the box after my initial iATKOS 2.0i 10.5.2 Install.

I found that it is possible to get a louder volume for the mic input (in Sigmatel 9228). (+20 db)
What you have to do is to edit the file AppleHDA.kext/Contents/Info.plist and there find
CODE
<dict>
<key>NodeID</key>
<integer>21</integer>
<key>Boost</key>
[b]<integer>1</integer>[/b]
</dict>
and replace by
CODE
<dict>
<key>NodeID</key>
<integer>21</integer>
<key>Boost</key>
[b]<integer>20</integer>[/b]
</dict>
Regards!
^ Desiderio's AppleHDA.kext + ALCInject.kext =

(Sigmatel 9228 on XPS M1330)
"Internal Speakers" = Speakers + Sound through first headphone jack
simultaneously"Headphones" = Sound through second headphone jack
only"Internal Microphone" = Microphone jack
onlySound works without having to use the reboot/sleep method. (You must
not have HDAEnabler.kext or any Apple Azalia audio kexts installed for this to work.)

I just wish I could get my sleep and shutdown to work...
Is there ANYTHING I can try?

Thanks Lofn,
Your solution also worked fine on my Dell XPS M1530 with Sigmatel 9205, while the installer from sonotone didn't work (9205 and 9228). However when I repaired the permissions on the ALCInject file, sound didn't work anymore without a sleep solution :S
The AppleHDA file alone doesn't work either btw.
EDIT: Anyone got a good solution for clicking on the trackpad? I used sontone's package but now it isn't working as good as before :S
