Ok, Here's a short and quick foolproof guide to making a SL-DVD leopard install disc for 9a559... And this method works across the board for all other builds also..

What you need

1. Original Leopard developers seed (.dmg)(6.55Gb)
2. One blank DVD (+1 backup blank just in case you screw up)
3. Mac OS X 10.4.X Tiger (This is important, cos leopard screws up disc burning)
4. 6.55Gb+6.55Gb+4.7Gb=17.8Gb of harddisc space

Method

1. Mount the Original Leopard DMG (jus double click u idiot!!)
2. Open Disc Utility (under Applications -> Utilities)
3. Click on New Image (at the top u fool!!)
4. Name the image as dump (save on desktop!!)
5. Put the type as sparse image
6. Put the size as DL-DVD (8Gb), and click create

7. Mount dump.sparse
8. In disc utility, select the dump image and click the restore tab
9. Drag the mounted Mac OS X Install DVD to the Restore from field
10. Drag the mounted dump to the Restore to field (or equivalent)
11. Click Restore and wait.. (have some patience... ZEN...)

12. Once that is done, open up the dump mounted image
13. Remove the Developers Tools under Optional Installs
14. Use finder's Go to Folder option and navigate to /Volumes/dump/System
15. Go to Installation -> Packages
16. Proceed to remove anything that has Printer in it (u can always get from vendors)
17. Proceed to remove languages that you do not need (like french, german)
18. Verify in Disc Utility on the size of your dump (should be 4.3Gb or less)

19. Return to Disc Utility
20. Click on New Image
21. Name the image as burn (save on desktop!!)
22. Put the type as sparse image
23. Put the size as SL-DVD(4.7Gb), and click create
24. Select the burn image and click the restore tab
25. Drag the mounted dump to the Restore from field
26. Drag the mounted burn to the Restore to field (dont mix up!!!)
27. Click Restore and wait.. (have some patience... ZEN...)

28. Once its done, burn it to DVD (in Tiger, not leopard)

PS: Mods please sticky this as a resource for people who wanna make their own SL-DVD leopard install discs

Will this DVD works on OSX86 platform?
rathalos
NO... this is strictly for people who own AUTHENTIC apple hardware...
krassi Vassev
Ok, I see. Thanks for your reply.
dvd
by "developer's tools" in step 13, do you mean "xcode tools?"
rathalos
Yes... the Xcode has to be removed...
dvd
hmm... i followed all the instructions, removing the xtools as well as getting rid of a few languages all to fit in one dvd but when i try to install, it tells me that installer could not be started because not all of the needed files were found.. help...?
rathalos
u're burning using which dmg? and which system u r using to burn?
dvd
Mac OS X 9a559 DVD.dmg
went through dump.sparseimage to burn.sparseimage
Platform: Mac OS X 10.4.10
Using Disk Utility
rathalos
hmm... u got it off where? thepiratebay.org or the one from oink? try unmounting the burn.sparseimage first and burn the image without mounting it..
dvd
i got it off a site where i pay per megabytes of download for ultra-fast speeds

but anyways, i'll try to do what you suggested and wait a long time for my mac to read the cd and finally install it
rathalos
anyway, if u do this method of creating a install DVD, the boot time is 15min before it reaches the installer... thats the downside of this method... YMMV...
dvd
hmmm nope, it still doesn't install. i unchecked printer drivers, X11 is still checked
looks like you can't erase as many languages as you like. It seems that you can only erase Brazilian Portuguese, Portuguese, and Polish. Can't erase German or French cuz it's necessary for an "upgrade" for the Mac OS X operating system.
any way to get around this problem? if i don't erase more than those 3 languages, i can't reduce my file size
YoMuS
It worked for me by deleting XCode, Printer drivers and the three pdf's in the mounted dmg window.
zeebe
I have the same problem, the DVD I burned boots just fine, but after I get through all of the Install instructions, it says it can't install because it is missing parts, please restart and try again. The one I burned I erased ALL languages. Going to try another one without removing languages, just what YoMuS says above. Maybe you could post it on Usenet or the Pirate Bay or something (your disc image). Just an idea.

Anyone know how to modify it so it will install on an 800MHZ powerbook G4?
rathalos
for me, i removed all my languages except english, and in the installer screen, i deselected all the languages... if u need some specific languages, do keep them... note that this has only been tried on clean install... but i think it shouldnt be a problem for upgrade... try removing really odd languages that u will never understand like chinese and korea and jap (i know all 3 languages anyway... but i dun need them on my os anyway)

EDIT: There's no way u can modify it to install inside 800Mhz PPC unless u hack into the installer and disable the hardware checks... And in that case, even if u did install, like what apple has said, the experience for 800Mhz PPC is terrible... So u might wanna consider sticking to tiger for now and wait for 10.4.11... thats my 2cents...
georgiworld
I am actually using an older build now and it runs fine.

dvd
note: if you've already installed certain languages for tiger os x, you are forced to upgrade it in the leopard installation. so is there a way to "uninstall" languages from the tiger os?
rathalos
u might wanna try fiddling around with /Library/Reciepts and see how far that can take u... cos leopard might read the base system's installed method through the receipts generated...

Worked great on my G4 - look in my sig - but as it is running a little slower than my OSX 10.4.10 installation I have kicked it off the second drive and am back to 9.2 and 10.4.10 again.
Probably will install Leopard - gold when new software demands it. But for me there is no real need to switch to Leopard for a while.
Nice eyecandy, different from OSX 10.4, not sure if I like all the changes though....
probably have gotten used to the 10.3 and 10.4 look for years now. Time for a change....not yet wink.gif

Hi, can anyone help me here please.

I have followed all the instructions and all ok for burning the dvd. I get to that last minute of installation and it crashes. I have even downloaded another copy of leopard burnt to SL DVD and the same thing happens at the end of installation.

In the log error I get,

localhost /Volumes/Mac Leopard/private/tmp/scripts.RzeB/ ./postinstall[426] File does not exist, Will create /Volumes/Mac /leopard/Library/prefernces/com.apple.pcast_integration.plist

Then I get

Could not save crash report to disk

Then I get a huge list of the crash report.

Like I said I downloaded Leopard again in case I had a problem with the first download. I have burnt several DVDs and have also gone through the process of creating a SL DVD several times, and I get the same thing happening.

I have the new (only couple weeks old) iMac 2.4 ghz C2D with 3gb ram. I am running Tiger on my iMac

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Your 'couple of weeks old iMac' probably is no PPC machine but an Intel machine, this only works for PPC real macs.
End of this month Leopard will be released so perhaps it's better to wait for the official release and put that on your mac!

Yes - it works. I'm on 9a581 now - installed from a single layer dvd.
nikolas
What else did you delete other than Xcode and the printer drivers to get it down to 4.3gb? I could only slim it down to 4.5 like this with the GM build.
complex
9A581 from a single layer DVD here too.

I removed Xcode, all printer drivers, and all languages. The final size was 4.2 GB I believe.
uwaterloo
OMG, I just bought DVD+R DL today~~after that, I saw this topic
karishbhr
and you guys are using the method in the OP or a different one?

Is there anyway i can burn it on a Windows PC? My Macbook doesn't burn DVD : (

Can anyone tell me if this is still true as of the GM? I tried this and I thought the system was hanging, but maybe it was just taking a long time. (I doubt I waited more than 15 minutes.)
karishbhr
I can confirm that this method works... just make sure you follow it step by step and dont take any liberties

Anybody? I think mine is going on a half hour now... should I give up, or let it keep going?

(It's at the part where you'd be at the grey Apple logo with the spinny thing. I started it up with cmd-V, so it's showing me the console... the last messages are something to do with Bluetooth, though they don't look like error messages.)
rathalos
Well, if u have a spare tiny hdd lying around, restore it to a hdd... that one i seriously die die recommend...

took me 15min to install 9a581 from first start.... blazing fast if u do it from a hdd....
saare2000
It seems like its not possible to get the size down to 4.3 with GM!.
I only managed to get down to 6.1 gigs
rathalos
u can remove xcode, u can remove all languages except english.... and u can remove all forms of printer drivers... that should already save u lots of space and squeeze it down to a small size of about 4.2 or 4.3 Gb
jmhays3
im working from the 9A581 build... is it possible to use these instructions?? i cant seem to get this method to work that is described here it always has an error regarding it cant find the disc or somemthing right at the end..... thanks again everyone

######## REAL GUIDE HOW TO BURN ON SINGLE LAYER DISK######
##############################################

The other guides give an large image. This one is the real deal.

Look for a program called Carbon Copy Cloner on google.

Open the image in the program and deselect
Xcode Tools

Under System/Installation/Packages you will need to deselect some Printer Drivers and some language files.
I only left the one I really use.

Use disk utility and create a new image, size 4.7GB (SL DVD) and use this image as the destination in Carbon. Otherwise you might end up with a big file (7GB) with only 4GB of data on which isn't burnable on a SL DVD.

Remember to deselect the same files under the installations options or the install will fail.

IF YOU WANT ALL THE LANGUAGES FILES JUST INSTALL EACH PKG AFTER.
Erhnam
I removed Xcode, Language files and all printer files. DVD size is still 5.2GB, not enough. Do I need to remove the *Additional*.pkg files from the Installation directory as well?
complex
Make sure you empty the trash after deleting the files, otherwise it won't reflect the new size properly in Disk Utility.
bofors
Thanks guys, but I also wondering if it is possible to rip the PPC binaries out too (and vice versa), to make the disk smaller (like maybe half size).
kuchdawg
you could try somthing like trim-app...I have never used it...but it might work

hmm, after i finished doing all of that, i burned the dvd and inserted it. i restarted my computer and the blue screen comes on with the little circle thing in the middle. my laptop keeps having these beeping noises, i've waited probably 20 minutes now and it still hasn't changed. so i guess i didnt something wrong?
henky
This guide did not work for me!
It might be because I burned wrong
this is how I did it: In disk utiliy I selected the burn image, clicked burn(upper left corner of the utiliy)
and let it burn at 4X(I couldn't select any other speed)
now when I boot my pc with the cd, it reads the cd for a moment, and then continues booting my normal system:S
In windows the cd shows up as audio-cd with one file in it: track 01
the only files I deleted: everything with printer in it, and all languages except: french german and english

How the hell do i get this right?
thanks!
(I downloaded my leopard, it's no beta, this should work on intel right?)

f1n3st
This failed for me also, it has

Install Failed

The Installer could not locate the data it needed to install the software. Check your install media or internet connection and try again or contact the software manufacturer for assistance.

Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again.
