OK, No NEW iPhone Model before Christmas, New iMac with keyboard, Updated iPod, but a New version of the iPod with a wide touchscreen, so there will be models of iPods, Leopard in October, But in the News Apple has stated about a Product transition, I have a hunch that this means that they will be realeasing OSX leopard for regulaer PC's. I really doubt it and I HOPE its doesnt happen. but thats what a thinks about hte next 6 months of apple!

Not going to happen. It's been said before, I'll say it again.

Apple will not release OS X onto grey boxes.

There are many reasons, not least their macs are a major source of income, amongst

Thankfully, we still have the OSX86 project.
macfan92
I know they SHOULD never do that, but nobody thought apple would switch to intel,

I think you have it backwards. Most people here are like "HELL YA BRING IT ON!" when it comes to getting OS X out for regular PC's. Apple ain't gonna do it though, much as I really, really, really wish they would.

Personally, I just want a cheap "beige box" (or whatever color du jour; most PC's are black these days anyways smile.gif) from Apple itself. Mini/Mid-tower system with relatively commodity non-laptop components. The Mini in a midtower case but with a few PCI-E expansion slots and a 3.5"/desktop hard drive is EXACTLY what I want.

Sinister side of me: maybe by Product transition they mean they're gonna dump Mac's alltogether and just focus on iPod, iTunes music, and iPhone sales wacko.gif . Or maybe just discontinue OS X and focus on selling high quality Windows PC's with bundled Apple application software. They did just port over Safari. iLife might not be far behind . . . Ok, ok, I'll quit. Put the rocks down guys biggrin.gif.

Agreed. Don't we go through this every couple months? wink.gif

As long has Windows has a 95% market share of desktop OSes this will never happen.
As great as it may seem for joe user, Apple has too much to lose doing this.

(The "they would sell so much more they would make up for the lost hardware in OS sales argument" doesn't fly. There's more to it then just money. Controlling a some what proprietary hardware set for your OS gives you certain advantages in not only the OS but also in other emerging markets. It isn't gonna happen.)

I think Apple should release a retro line of desktops. For example, imagine a sawtooth style powermac tower case but 3/4 the height, a different color scheme. but with the same shape and same accessibility to components. Give it the same guts as the current iMac line but add 1 PCIe x1 + 1 PCIe x16. Base price $800

***or***

Do a special barebones deal for gamers. The same retro case, mobo, CPU and OSX for $450. They could make it available at Best Buy, Circuit City, Tigerdirect,Newegg and hit all the usual places the gamers go to spec out their PC's. If Apple was to do all this, and also develop something that could outdo DirectX 10. Apple could win over legions of gamers over a relatively short amount of time and substantially increase their market share.

Just thought I'd throw in an idea or two since we're all armchair CEO-ing here. biggrin.gif

no way apple's making os x for pcs, they sell oses for $129, and can make $129 (not counting any expenses), but if they sell a mac, the can make hundreds and some times even thousands (expenses included)

I think in the end Apple ENJOYS their market obscurity.

Moving to Intel was a business move. The processor was probably better and cheaper to move over and more efficient.

the New Ipod will not have the touch screen for the 6th gens..apples confirmed that alrdy

how ever the UI and Apple OS they use on the Ipod is updated...

Apple will never let Max OSX go PC...
Here is a simple explanation to why...

Now if you want to buy Mac OSX, you need a Mac

OSX $130 and I am pretty sure you will want that fancy MacBook +1000, at least...

See where the market benefit here?
People want the safety and secuirty of the OSX, but are required to buy a $1000 computer to make it work perfectly...

Now what if OSX was not PC compatible?

Cheap Dell PC - $300
Mac OSX - $130

$300 + $130 = $430

See the different between $430 and $1130+?

And heck, apple will only be receiving $130 of the profit...

That is why it's stupid for them to go PC, because then everybody will avoid paid for their over priced computers and go with cheap Dells...

Apple is not stupid to loose the extra $1k they can get from their customers.

i couldn`t agree more with you empreality.

I got 2 words for you: power computing.

Those beige-box "clones" nearly put Apple 6-feet under. Apple just couldn't compete in the low-end market. I wouldn't expect them to make the same mistake again.

I do think Apple thrives on their relative obscurity as well.

Definetly, or at least they use it to their advantage. I mean, the whole sleek, cool, fresh Mac vibe. Y'know?
jglavin
Yeah, how sleek and cool would it be if everyone had one? lol

wait, i take that back.. everyone has an ipod... maybe if they made the ipods into little macs they could "trick" everyone into being a mac owner? laugh.gif

I would LOVE to see a proper expandable barebones Mac Tower so that you could kit it out with your own stuff, but its not going to happen. I would like to see a Mac Mini with a graphics card too. Maybe possible?

I do not know what Apple will or will not do.

I do know that there is NO WAY apple is making $1000 profit from the $1000 extra they are getting from their customers who purchase hardware.

cost to build, test, market, ship hardware, amongst other costs, cannot be ignored.

Definitely right...
Mac users are so proud of being Mac users, they feel so special and superior to other people...
I'm sure some of them would kill themselves if everyone had a Mac.
