So I've used Azureus for a year or so now, and I've always been pretty happy with it, except for the fact that it uses a lot of CPU resources and is a little slow as a program.

I tried uTorrent a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

For Windows or OS X, which client do you use? I've also tried Transmission on a Mac, and it seems good as well, although I do sorta miss the cluttered UI of Azureus that told me a ton more than I needed to know. rolleyes.gif

IMO Azureus for multiple files, BitTorrent for single file, althou I use eDonkey2000 with a BitTorrent plugin on XP tongue.gif
cyrana
I've never found much of a difference between any of them, other than some crashing more or using more RAM. Then again, I only use BT for the occasional TV show that I missed.

I like Tomato Torrent on OSX, though.
jfn
Tomato Torrent on OS X is my favorite as well. And man does that Dock icon look juicy and delicious...
blackentangled
i agree, tomato torrent is the fastest i have got my hands into. is there a bitcomet like app for mac os x? coz i like that option wherein you can choose not to d/l the whole torrent but pick just the one you want...
Colonel
I've always used Azureus. I've tried others, but none seem to be as good. But that's just my opinion.
Nickhamm
I used Bits on Wheels on MacOS and am pretty happy with the interface. It seems to run fairly decent even though it is not Universal yet. On Windows I used to use Azureus, but now I am using uTorrent because Azureus had major memory leakage and ate up my CPU cycles.
rohde
On OS X I use Transmission. Quite good.
jfn
I use Transmission now, instead of Tomato. Great program. Wish there were a non-Azureus full-featured program though, like uTorrent.
Colonel
What's so bad about Azureus?
jbjonas
Azureus is the best. Hands down, no issues... I don't know what memory leak you are talking about Nickhamm. What version of Azureus? dev.gif

No contest.

Azureus is the only decent client on OS X but it's laggy, resource intensive and basically java bloatware.

If you need a really lightweight feature packed client and have a Windows box to host it off then try this.
ABC Torrent

If you want to use it from your mac (or from anywhere for that matter) simply set up the Web based interface and put this up on a web server somewhere.

For extra security you should password protect the directory using .htaccess if you can.

I host this at mydomain.com/abc and I set up a user/pass for getting into that folder.

The "leakage" is a pun, for those who aren't in on the joke. Azureus' problem lies in the Java engine it depends on, which just makes it gobble up system resources like a fat kid on Value Meal, hence the "leakage".

For a no frills BT app, I'd recommend Transmission, as it has proven time and again to be the fastest bit-guzzler in the Mac Galaxy. And it's written from ground up to be system resource friendly. However its biggest problem right now is that it doesn't have DHT (Distributed Hash Table) layer support. As a result many torrents simply don't work on this client.
Colonel
For Mac I use Transmission and for Windows I use Bit Comet.
snackole
If you fine tune Azureus it runs real smooth. Open the preferences, go to Interface/Display change update gui from every 1 second to 2 seconds and change update graphical bars from 4 to 5.
A Nonny Moose
Use Opera (the Opera 9 beta) and get web browsing, IRC, and torrent support all in one package
blackentangled
is it just me or torrent support in opera9 beta is slow? anyways it's still beta...
miranda
Transmission works really great

I'm very impressed with utorrent for PC. It's lightweight and quite powerful.
XanthraX
I'm verry impressed about BitComet on Windows (but without Bitcomet accelerator that contains spywares).
On Mac, I like Bits On Wheels
Hitesh
utorrent for windows
azureus for mac ..pretty good never crashes and i download a lot wid good speeds
johnniecarcinogen
utorrent on windows
ktorrent on linux (kde ofcourse, as good as or better than utorrent)
azureus on OS X (I'd like to find a better one though)

the key to using any of them is to manually forward a port on your router rather than use upnp
macprodan
to be honest, i used to be a Big fan of Azureus back in my Windows Days.. lol. i find the UI on Azureus horrible in OS X.

No i would like to promote Transmission, nice more mac'ish UI. Works just as well as Azureus in my experience.

Maybe it's changed in the year or so since I used it, but as much as I like KDE (KDE WOOOOOO!), ktorrent stinks (stunk?). It starts downloading at the beginning... and goes through each piece little by little, till it gets to the end. Naturally, it goes very slow and I was wondering what was taking it until I opened up the torrent in Azureus....

But my favorite BT client in Linux by far is rtorrent. Simple, lightweight, console-based, extremely efficient (read: bandwidth go boom and argh), and fast as you'll let it be.

I haven't gotten rtorrent to build on my macs ever (I've only tried it on the MacBook, so support is probably still not there yet), so I've used Bits on Wheels because it's really cool. I haven't tried it on my MacBook just yet (it isn't Unibin right now), but I'll look at Transmission even though it doesn't seem to have all the features I want, just because it has nice aesthetics to it.

In my opinion, Azureus is the best on any platform, but since it's a resource hog (JAVA GAHHH) and I don't have any computers with RAM to spare, I don't use it.
johnniecarcinogen
I used to never give ktorrent a try but I can assure you it is nice now. It does seem to download the first half of the torrent before the end half but It didn't seem to compromize speed. (i stopped ktorrent and resumed with azureus and kt was faster). the options allow you to choose memory imprint size, etc. but for some reason you have to enable the sys tray icon blink.gif

I just gave Bits on Wheels a try. Its ok. User friendly I think. Azureus wont start here, dunno why.

Sorry to be a nag, but I believe you mean, "What's the best torrent client." BitTorrent is a misused term. I'm using BitLord in Windows XP x64 right now, Azureus in OS X, and BitTorrent for Linux I believe.
henbjo
BitLord here as well. Very nice client. Very user friendly and quite powerful.

On Windows µTorrent
On OS X Azureus Altough the UI is terrible and I hate that the app closes when one closes the window)
on Linux Bittorrent but I haven't usen it in a wile
BaselineAce
Long time Azureus user.

I like µtorrent on Windows, very powerful and Lightweight, on Mac i'm not decided yet, I like Transmission but it has not much info about the torrents, like tomato torrent but it's very CPU consuming.
Pantalaimon
Transmission runs greater and faster than azureus and it downloads faster too and doesnt speed down de broadband biggrin.gif
amdprophet
I could be wrong, but I don't think torrent downloading speeds is dependant on the software you are using. I believe it all has to do with how many seeders, and how much upload bandwidth they've dedicated for us to use.
Pantalaimon
yep, but strangely transmission download files (at least for me) faster than azureus

its weird O.o
u1m2
another vote for the utorrent for windows

Bad torrent clients can make you download slower than your bandwidth can handle. Also, some trackers ban certain clients because they do bad things (like poll the tracker too much).

uTorrent on Windows and Transmission on OS X
U.C.
Bitcomet on Windows. I hate tracker handling in uTorrent. In OSX i cant find the right one. I need one with which i can select which files to DL from a torrent.

Azureus, none other.

And those who think Azureus is fugly, so it is. But you can make it look a little more OS X-like by checking off "Use closeable tabs" and "Use Faggoty Tabs" under Interface>Display. Makes it at least a little more tolerable.

Remember to update your Java to J2SE 5 Release 4.

Azureus FTW!
tha_toadman
Transmission FTW!
Swad
Transmission .6 is out and has some nice improvements. Check it.

Azeurus!

RobNyc
Transmission, always
Easiest.
bptba93
If I feel like doing some torrenting in os x...um i use Tomato Torrent.. if i'm in windows i use uTorrent...seems to work quite well for me ..i tried Azeurus but it seems to complicated for me...
pew138
i like uTorrent, after a long use of BitTornado
mintmocha
bitcomet for windows
Kiko
Bitcoemt is evil, it doesnt conform to bittorent standards and it adds speed on top of your download thus making it look faster.

Azerues XD rocks
Genix
Azureus is the only torrent client I can use on OSX simply for the fact that it is the only torrent client that will allow you to choose which files to download. Also when I used Transmission it would slow down my internet to a crawl almost making browsing impossible while it was running, but with Az this doesn't happen.

On XP I use uTorrent.
UnknownGuy
Azureus and uTorrent FTW.
