Funny story: At my town's dump there's a place that we call the "Duxbury Mall" where you can drop off just about anything for someone else to scavenge up. So my dad's making a dump trip the other day, looks in the Mall, and lo and behold there's an original (circa late 1997) boxed Powerbook G3 sitting there. 250MHz G3, tiny HDD, probably weighs about ten pounds; etc etc etc.

So for the hell of it, he brought it back. When I opened the box it was still factory sealed... who knows where it originally came from. Macintosh OS 8.0, booted up to the original setup screen. Never been used before. So far, it seems like a slow, useless piece of junk.

I've been trying to get it onto the Internet (Netscape 3.0, woooo!) but it refuses to work. I'm using a direct cable connection from my router to the PB, set up with DHCP. All the other computers in my house get an IP address and connect fine, but this Powerbook won't get an IP. Is there anything I can do to make this work?

I've been trying to find any software in my house that will work on OS8, but I don't think there's anything at all. Heh. Maybe I could get OSX running on it. That'd be a laugh.

that'd be cool to get osx running on it, my g3 300mhz runs 10.1. but you should leave os 8 on there, it is classic! that will be worth some major moola! $$ i will buy that for $100 including S+H

I might take you up on that... could use $100 or so. I want to see what I can do with it first, though. I want to make sure I have the OS8 discs, and if I do I'm going to try and install the 5-CD set of OSX I'm currently torrenting getting.

Any tips on getting the Internet working?

I heard this was once considered the world's fastest laptop.

the original PB G3 will run OSX if you use XpostFacto but as far as i know you can only get a 256 colour display with Tiger and the maximum ram it suports is 160mb so its not going to be too nice to use but do it just so you can say you did you will pay a lot for the memory upgrade though.

i have been thinking about putting some version of OSX on My 3400c, its pretty much the same machine exept for the 603 cpu and only 16 ram built in, if i can find 10.1 i may give it a try.

To get DHCP working on OS8 you may need to install some OS updates, Puremac has everything you need to get any classic OS up and running.
