Full Version: 10.4.8 FSB Video problem

First I tried to correct my clock that was running fast by changing the FSB. I put fsb=266 in as a kernel flag. As I was reading through the forums, I found that somebody was also having the same problem I was with VLC running too fast also. So I go to check VLC and now it stutters, clears up for a sec, stutters some more, loses audio, and then crashes. Quicktime and Divx player both do the same thing. But, sounds like from what other people say about FSB relations to multimedia, I should have audio troubles... but I don't. I can play anything in iTunes just fine.

So, why is my video screwed up if everything else (including the clock) is now perfect?

I think you might have selected the wrong FSB setting.

When using the Semthex kernel, you may need to set your FSB frequency. It is set to 200 by default.

At boot, type: fsb=xxx (where xxx is a number like 133, 166 or 200)
fsb is a frequency
fsb (freq) = fsb (speed) / 4
Find your fsb (speed) in your BIOS or:
(OSX) System Profiler -> Hardware -> Bus Speed (fsb speed)
(Win) PC Wizard -> Mainboard -> Chipset -> fsb (speed) and fsb (freq) are both avail
Remember to divide the speed by 4. If your FSB (speed) is 667, then your FSB (freq) = 166 because 667/4 = 166

At boot, type fsb=166 (use your value) or put the fsb in your boot.plist under Kernel Flags:
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>cpus=1 fsb=166</string>

(Win) PC Wizard - where is it?
thx.

Google: PC Wizard

Should be the first hit.

Google is everyone's friend!

what version of the semthex kernel are you using? if you're using with whatever came with the JaS 10.4.8 dvd, you should upgrade.
Rammjet
Also, some core duo users suffer from "stutter". To fix that, turn off one core. It doesn't have a large effect on real-world performance.

At boot, type: cpus=1 or enter that in boot.plist under Kernel Flags

I will reinstall OSX 10.4.8 tonight. So after that will update kernel from this link: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=33039
Or i need to get semthex-beta8 ? If yes, please give me a link.
Rammjet
That link should get you beta8.
Xopek
Now OSx works fine.
I download beta8 autoinstaller of run it. After few minutes it asks me to reboot OSx. ok.
Need I make any other actions to install beta8 or it is allready installed?
Rammjet
Should be all installed. You can remove any fsb=xxx from boot.plist if you put it in there.

Sg,

Thanks for the tip of updating the kernel, it appears that everything is working fine now. My clock runs right, and my video is back. Gosh, I guess I don't have anything more to get working on this box.

Thanks everyone,

Stephen

Sorry for the errant link in my signature. Thanks for pointing that out, should work now. It now links to the forum topic that has the download in the first post.
