My computer doesn't give me the chance to enter any kind of bootup options... it just goes right to "booting darwin" or whatever it says. any suggestions as to how else I can enter "-v"?
I know what it's supposed to look like because I used to dual boot OS X with XP on my dimension 3000, but this scenario is beyond my comprehension at the moment

I am trying to dual boot vista and osx I have followed the install guide to the "T" and i still cant get it to work.
My hardware:
DS3 rev1 board
E6300 OC 3.2
3 SATA Hard Drives (2 WD250GB & 1 Seagate150GB)
1 PATA DVD Drive
This is what i have done numerous times...Clean install of vista...during install set up 30GB partition and leave it as unallocated space...once Vista is completely installed I use the disk part command and prep the partition. I allready have downloaded the 10.4.8 reseed and the JMB patch. Patched iso and burnt it. Set bios back to factory defaults no OC... 0-3 ports enabled and in IDE mode. After loading the disc I use the -v option its starts to load and then i get the dreaded waiting for root. I thought maybe it was the wd Drive so i switched it to the seagate still same problem. Any Ideas on What the hell I am doing wrong. Maybe i have Dl the wrong file from demonoid but not exactly sure. I downloaded the MAC OS X 10.4.8 Intel Only Jas re-seed (SSE3 Only - NO AMD) and used the JMB patch.

You should set the 0-3 ports to native, and tell us the packages u selected @ install.. Did you manage to install? or you can't enter the install routine?

okay guys figured it out my dvd rom was in slave mode switched it to master and all good able to install...I am amazed at how well it worked out. couple of questions... software updating are we okay with taking the upgrades? Also I used Pions ds3-ds4 1.2 update and was wondering my audio in vista works through the optical out but i have no sound in osx any is it because of the optical out? And final question for the night is it normal during reboot for the system to hang?
This forum is great their is a wealth of knowledge available here... I just wanted to say thanks to all of you that helped make this possible.

Hello guys,
installed my system now with Dual Boot XP and OSX 10.4.8 reseed !
Also GForce 7600gs with NATIT and Sound with Patcher.
All function very well ! Quartz and 2D acceleration ... OK
Sound OK - USB OK - Gigabit OK -
Used this Manual for Dualboot .... the best i think ! Tested many !
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=6890You can do all stuff with "eXtended Fdisk",
don`t need Fdisk ....
Download Hirens Boot Disk, it is ideal for us.
But i have one problem, i think you can give me a hint !
If i say shutdown in OSX the system shut down,
but if i say restart it don`t restart my pc only get black screen and nothing happens.
Thanks for your work !

I'm a happy user of the OSX86 on a DS4 board, but I've got a very annoying problem. The system time seems to run faster than normal. While watching the clock it looks like 1 minute passes, but in real time it only took 40-45 seconds.

When the system synchronizes with Apple's timeserver, the time jumps back. Has anyone had the same problem? Please help, I feel I'm getting older too fast...

I`m already using it.
It instals perfectly without any gadgets (using IDE DVD).
Warning: there are a few bugs with most network cards.
Download or print your network setup before installing it.
I've noticed a performance improvement in HDD. getting 48 in x-bench test in a samsumg 7200 sata2 and that fsb stuff appears to be ok now.

at this stage you no longer need an sata/ide adapter. you can connect the dvd rom directly to the jmicron ide if you have the jmicron patch installed. I sugesst that you read the threads backwards since many problems were solved since the tread started this way you can get to the latest solutions first and avoid taking steps that are no longer necessary.

Pioneer drives don't seem to like the SATA converters. The worst compatibility with my converter was using a pioneer drive.

965P-DS3/S3 now support AHCI and NCQ!
just update BIOS to F8(S3)/F10(DS3), in CMOS setup, set AHCI enable and native mode enable.
WindowsXP use intel matrix driver (modified .inf to DEV_2824)
OSX use AppleAHCIPort.kext(modified Info.plist to 0x28248086)

Just a quick report on the Gigabyte GA-965GM-S2.
After a lot of trouble I managed to install JaS 10.4.8 on this board. With more trouble tweaking things, everything works. Sound, IDE, FireWire, USB, PS2. Well, no acceleration on the onboard X3000 graphics but I have this perfectly working 6800XT anyway.
The board is very similar to the DS3. Actually so similar that thedguy and this thread could solve most of the post install issues. I'll make a nice step-to-step guide later on.
Oh, and with JaS 10.4.8 the SATA disks work very fast on the orange ports with SATA native mode enabled and all legacy stuff disabled. Have a Samsung and Western Digital harddisk installed, no problems. I did install the ICH8 drivers on the JaS release, perhaps that made a difference.
The 10.4.7 install dvd and installation would give a "still waiting for root device" error, so I guess nothing below 10.4.8 will work on this board. The IDE doesn't work without a fix, so you'll need either a SATA DVD drive or to write the image to the harddisk for an install from the HD.
hey there. care to elaborate what initial problems you had with this board? I intend on using "JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3" with "JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSe2.SSe3.v1p ppf" patch. I am closing-in on getting this board before I buy. I am having a rough time with my present board (see sig) as OSX consistently crashes on desktop boot. I need to know what works and what doesn't on this board.
Thank you in advanced!!!

I love this forum!

Hi Folks

, first post on the forum ! i was doing some compatibility research in order to see if OSx86 can run on my PC !
When i first saw the x86 Wiki , i was very enthousiast everithings looks perfect !
here's my system and the compatibility i found
- Cpu : core 2 duo > OK with JAS 10.4.8 + last Semthex kernel
- Mobo : 965P - DS3 > OK with JAS 10.4.8 + JMB + Pions package - CG : 7900 GS > OK with JAS 10.4.8 + Titan or Natit drivers
- Audio : AC97 > Ok with the realtek driver
- Lan : Yukon > Ok with foredeth driver
- DVD : Pionneer IDE DVR series > Ok by default
- HDD : Seagate IDE 120go > No informations ...
Yeaar ! piece of cake ! that's what i thought at the begenning ... But i try to read all the topics related to my hardware ! and i fall on this very informative topics !
It looks that most people here are good coders from the linux world ! And i'm afraid after reading the 24 pages that install OSx 86 is now impossible for me . In facts
i have an IDE HDD and it looks that there is no way to solve this pb ! Can anybody confirm this information ?
My motivation for running osX is to
work with high end graphics appli like Shake and Maya !
- so i'm not here to try to port os X for the challenge
- i need a
reliable system with a Max of 3D Perf and CPU + Ram optimisation !
- i know basic unix coding but i'm not a computer moguls
So here is my second question : Does OSX 86 suited my needs ? Shake and Maya also runs on Linux , maybe it's a better OS choice for me ? Does Mac OS X use on pc is only reserved for those who Rocks at solving computers problems, who are entertained by the challenge of trying to break apple limitations ?
Thanks for reading me !
Sorry for this wordy post in a pretty bad english !
Best regards

Well i don't know if you can install OSX on the ide drive.
HD's are very cheap nowadays, get a samsung (works perfectly), hook it up on the jmicron, download jas latest release + patch and you are all set.

- Lan : Yukon > Ok with foredeth driver
- DVD : Pionneer IDE DVR - 107- HDD : Samsung Spinpoint P120 SATA - 250 Go - 8 MoMac OS X will be abble to run perfectly on my PC ! The things i have to do is just
- Catch on demonoid the JAS 10.4.8 last release ( AMD + INTEL ) NOT the reseed
- Catch the JMB patch and apply it on JAS DVD ( clic and drag , i assume )
- Follow the dual Boot XP / OS X with Acronis tutorial
- Install ONLY the SSE3 for intel package + ONLY The Titan 1.0 Package provided in JAS DVD
- Install the AC97 driver provided in the x86project driver section
And in theory i'm quite OK !
I need an new HDD so anyway i will give a try to this !
i just need a confirmation of this ! i don't want to have to much trouble when true action will begin

You don't need the JMB patch or the network driver, just download jas 10.4.8 latest release and ppf patch.
Plug the new HD to the purple (j-micron) port , select IDE mode from bios (ahci should also work) and install.
For the audio to work download ALC883Audio.pkg from

hi guys, I have a ga-965g-ds3 board and i'm running the latest JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSe2.SSe3 including JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSe2.SSe3.v1p ppf. Its the most complete release I have used. However I am encountering strange freezes. When I'm running a few heavy apps like AfterEffects and Photoshop... and some minor apps like firefox and messaging my "mac" tends to freeze. The system doesnt stop responding completely but no window responds properly at all. And I'm not even able to Force Quit anything either. My cursor just changes to the spinning rainbow wheel and thats it. I was really just getting settled and wanting to do some serious work.
Maybe I am not the only one? Does anyone have any experience with this? I don't know if there is a history of what the system has been doing whilst its not responding normally... and if that history is available after a cold reset.

it seems that wine can correctly emulate photoshop now ! so loosing many hours in order to understand those new Kext, Titan, Natit, ppf name , for running a non reliable system ... it's not the better way !
I'm gonna stay with Linux !
Anyway Chelhydra thanks for your great support !

SebKaine, thanks for your reply.
It is kinda hard to start working with OS X on a PC if you are not sure if the system is going to be stable. I put quite some time in OS X, and I'm glad I have. I find OS X far more inspiring then XP. I really want to enjoy its stability. I checked the system log but unfortunately it doesn't save the last events when you do a cold reset after it becomes unresponsive. I am going to go with it a little longer, maybe write a script which emails the system log every 5 minutes to my email so I can maybe find out whats up. I mean.. if a application screws up then I want to kill it. I could live with having to kill it...

I try to monitor the processes as well to see if something is eating up all my memory or cpu.
90% of all hangs in XP are easy to track through Task Manager and so on. Of course I understand that OS X is not supported and all is experimental... but I would love to stick with it. Linux is not going to do the trick for me because I want a well thought out GUI without having to tune it too much underneath.
Any tips for monitoring OS X when it becomes unresponsive are most welcome.

What kernel are you using? i'm using the daemon version, that is as close to the original as possible , no emulations etc

chelhydra,
My kernel is: Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.1: Sat Dec 9 22:18:27 AZOT 2006; semthex:/nebukadnezar/BUILD/obj/RELEASE_I386 i386 i386
Install DVD: JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSe2.SSe3 including JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSe2.SSe3.v1p ppf

Guys, check this out
http://www.techspot.com/review/40-core2-e4...0-overclocking/I think the serious bang for the buck is the new DS3P from Gigabyte, with the e4300 which has a multiplier of 9 so you don't even need expensive RAM to overclock at 1:1 memory ratio. If I were building an overclocked hackintosh from scratch this is definitely the setup to use. Also to save some hassle, there are now some SATA DVD-RW's showing up that are cheaper than Plextor or HP. I'm not 110% sure of hardware compatability, anyone try the DS3P yet, its sort of, all the features of the DQ6 but retaining all the overclockability of the DS3.

I just used the new 10.4.8 install disc and everything seems to be working great. In fact, it seems to have fixed most of my graphics card problems that took me months to figure out. It's amazing how good these new installers are getting. We started off hacking every part individually and now we there are installers that can do most of the work all at once for a large variety of computers. I will update soon on the progress of my install.
One problem I had this time was that my keyboard was not being recognized. It's very strange. If I take out my PS/2 connection and plug it back in, it works fine. Maybe there's a shady connection there. =/

Trust me... I'm running a DQ6 right now and its just as powerful as the DS3.
I've got my E6300 running at 3.2GHz on STOCK cooling rock solid stable with temps never hitting 60 under full load.
There's still some more room to go but 60 is my stopping point until I get the energy to rip the board out and put my CNPS 9500LED and some arctic silver on there.
That said... I'd assume that all the DS3 workarounds apply for me with a DQ6 too then?

I'm running a hand-built Core 2 Duo rig. I want to get OS X 10.4 running, with Parallels (I just cannot give up on Trillian) and I'm a gamer, so I guess I'll have to dual-boot into Windows and game my heart out.
It this a good idea, or even possible? I would love to get some advice and initial thoughts from you crazy OSX86 badasses before I dive into this. Here are my specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 - overclocked to 3.06Ghz
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Motherboard
OCZ DDR2 PC2 6400 - 2GB RAM
eVGA 256-P2-N516-RX GeForce 7800GT
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic 7.1 sound card
250 GB SATA Samsung Spinpoint Primary Drive (in 2 partitions) - “Rocky” and “Colt”
250 GB SATA Samsung Spinpoint Secondary Drive - “Tum Tum”
How should I go about installing OS X AND Windows for a dual-boot? Do I have to do Boot Camp, or just a bootloader? None of the tutorials cover all the hacks and workarounds that you guys have freaked in this thread. Can I get my video/audio cards working with this mobo?
Thanks, you guys are awesome.

Install on two separate drives. Easiest and safest way to go. Then just use the boot-time HD selector to decide which to boot from. I've been doing it like that for over a year now after fussing with chain loaders, GRUB, LILO, and Acronis crap... its just much easier to keep them separated.
Video should work with Titan but audio will not work no matter what you try as there are no kexts to support it.

I just wanted to thank EVERYONE from this thread. You guys and gals have helped me create a so far rock solid box with the following specs:
Intel e6400 OCd to 3.0GHz on stock cooling
512MB Crucial Ballistix DDR 800
GA-965P-DS3 ver 2.0
Lite-On DVD Burner(burns like a champ)
160GB Seagate HD
I had issues with a bad DVD burn but all is well now. The only issue is I tried to save my Acronis MBR by doing skip=63 but that made it so it doesn't load now with the DVD in the drive. I have tried rewriting the boot loader but I just get a blinking _ . In fact, my Windows partition has disappeared as well after the install even though it was in the Disk Utility during the install. I don't know or think this is fixable but I just threw in an old DVD ROM drive and I keep the DVD in there all the time and it doesn't both me. I should have tried to reinstall when I first did it but I have taken so much time now to edit everything that I will just live with it. I wonder if I could back up the entire partition to an external and then reinstall and restore... maybe.
Anyhow, THANKS EVERYONE! If anyone has any suggestions on my little issues please fell free to chime in.

Alright, I have established a triple boot!:
1. Max OS X
2. Mandriva 2007
3. Windows XP
Now I can relive some of the problems I had with OS X on Linux... yay!
@BIOS PLUG
Oh and I had some trouble updating the BIOS recently. It could be because I was running a modified bios trying to get my video card to work. At any rate, I want to put a plug in here for the @bios program which works great. Atiflash would not flash my bios (not even with a force flash -f). @bios is on the cd that comes with the motherboard and you can download it on the gigabyte website. Just make sure that the server you connect to has the most up-to-date bios at the time. When I updated recently, only F7 was available on the American server. I used the Taiwan server and am now running F10 which comes with a nifty splash screen.

Sorry, if this isn't allowed, but I also posted this in the "[HOWTO] Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 + osx 10.4.7/10.4.8 JaS" thread.
I've studied the forums before building my new rig (see sig). I am having a hard time getting a stable 10.4.8 load (JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3.v1p ppf). First attempt was smooth-I have 2 separate HDs, 1 for Vista and the other for OS X. I had my 2 SATA HDs and my SATA DVD all hooked up to the yellow ports (ICH8). Both SATA settings in the bios were enabled and set to ACHI/native mode.
I was able to boot the DVD and successfully install OS X (I already had Vista installed on the other drive along with EasyBCD). It booted up fine (dual boot was working great also) I still had to patch my Yukon network controller, and add Natit for dual display. I also installed Pion's patch. So far so good. I tried everything to get my ALC888 to work through SPDIF. The only way to get it to work was to install the DaemonES kernel, and use the AppleHDA patcher. Now everything was working great.
I started having problems with an IDE drive and my external Firewire drive not mounting (they would be mounted till the next restart). I would be fine till maybe another restart, then I would get the white screen hang (waiting for boot device). So I decided to reinstall OS X, only this time I had to move my HD to the purple port and leave my DVD drive on the yellow otherwise I would get the same "waiting for boot device" error. I just installed over my previous install and was back up running.
This time I decided to update to the latest Semthex kernel after fixing my audio problem. I was working fine for a while until I had the same problem with drives and booting. I've reinstalled about 5 times trying different things (for instance, without Pion's patch) and still am having no luck. This is driving me insane! I can sometimes startup by switching to the backup kernel in verbose mode, other times not. Does anyone have any ideas of what to try? Are there patches I should have stayed away from with the version of my install disk?
Another thing was weird, at some point during my first install, my SATA read "ICH7-M ACHI" in system profiler. All of the other installs I did they listed under "Generic ACHI". Could either of these issues be a cause of my problems? I also have an Sil 3132 SATA2 controller coming from Newegg that I will also try. I've also read somewhere that this could be a corrupted partition causing this problem. Should I reformat? Sorry for the long post.

I don't know if anyone has posted this yet but you can get a SATA samsung DVD writer at Micro Center for $49.99. part number is 868638, its not listed on the website but we carry them in our stores. Great drive, does lightscribe and its cheap enough to make it worthwhile not to use the adapters.
They are hard to come by, we get in 40 and they are usually gone in 3 days so call your local store to verify it is on hand first.

I also posted this in the "[HOWTO] Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 + osx 10.4.7/10.4.8 JaS. Sorry if i am not allowed to post here.
Ok ... Here the specs for my rig ...
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
GA-965p-DS3
EVGA nVidia 7900GS
WD PATA HDD
1GB Cosair
DVD-RW DVR-109
PS2 Keyboard and USB Mouse
Ok here is my case ... i used an external 3.5" HDD drive to change my IDE DVD Drive to usb so that i can install this OS. Note: I didn't change my PATA HDD to usb or sata because the disc i am using is patch beforehand so that it can boot into OSX after installation.
Then, i have set “Sata Port0-3 Native Mode” to “Disabled”, Onboard SATA/IDE Device” to “Enabled” and Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode” to “AHCI.”
After that, the problem is why do I still get the message
“System config file ‘/Library/Peferences/System Configuration/com.apple.Boot.plist not found’ when i am trying to boot my cd during startup to format my hdd and install the osx.
Thanks in advance..

It sounds like your problem is related to the fact that you keep switching mach kernels. Maybe you should keep the original mach kernel and edit it manually rather than switching.

Thank you for the tip. However, I would note here that if you are using the newest Jas 10.4.8, it is not necessary to use an optical drive that is SATA or SATA-converted.

I am confused by this section. You used a hard drive to change a DVD-Rom drive to USB?
These are the important questions:
What install disc are you using?
What type of HD (PATA/SATA)?
How is it connected?
What type of DVD drive are you using?
How is it connected?

I was able to get a stable boot by putting my OS X HD on the first orange port. I have my Vista load on a PCIe SATA card. Once in a while I still have problems with some of the NTFS drives (internal and Firewire) not mounting. When this happens, System Profiler beachballs as does Disk Utility. Unmounting them brings those utilities back to life. Sometimes a reboot fixes it. Anyone else with this problem?

Updated my OSX 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 and nothing more functions!
Can´t boot and I just can´t use Jas dvd installation; I´m trying to use Pata to usb converter but...nothing happens.
Be careful with this update.

Could you explain in a bit more details you are having with the update? Also what method did you use to go to 10.4.9?
