Hello to all!

First of all, i'm new here.

I'm Pedro and i'm writing you from Portugal. I'm a interface designer and been working with a Win machine since ... ever.

Now, i'm really thinking in getting a MBP. The problem is that i got a i7 machine in the beginning of the year ( pretty powerful, running at this moment @ 3.8Ghz, 6Gb ram and GTX295 )

Well, the problem is that, as we all know, MBP are pretty pricey ... I tried to install OSX86 in my machine but it was a no go ...

So ... now i'm facing a dilemma: Buy the MBP now or ... just wait a little more for a refresh.

I know they had a refresh last june ( or july ... i really don't remember, but it was somewhere that time ) , but i've been reading that Apple may be coming out with a refresh in the Q1 of 2010.

As i'm using a i7 machine, i can't say i "REALLY NEED" a MBP for "yesterday" .

So, i would like like to, first, know your opinions about if :

a) go for it ... the MBP won't be refresh that soon
cool.gif wait ... i have a good machine and the next refresh is going to introduce a new platform
c) we really don't know nothing about new refreshes coming out in the near future
d) Just buy a EFI-X and plug-it
e) Just wait for the EFI-X PRO
f) EFI-X is a "fake" ...

ehehe, i know there are lots of options but ... i've been reading a lot.
The reason i got EFI issue to this post, its because when i really thought it was great i read an article where i understood it was a scam ... true?

Thank you for the support.
Pedro

I'd wait. There are many changes in computing market in relatively short time. You have a powerful machine. No need to change it to Mac unless you need to use one for OS X apps creation.

What motherboard is your i7 system based on?

Opes
I would say "F", and the MBP will be updated Q1/10, so if you really need it, go for it, if not, wait.

I agree with Opes, If you really need a MBP, then don't wait. I bought my wife a used Macbook (1.83 Ghz Core 2 Duo) I upgraded the HD and Ram, and she loves it it is plenty fast for her. I wouldn't do any video compression or editing on it, but for most other things I works great and fast. The reason I am saying this is cause OS X is much better with older hardware than Windows is so Mac does not really benefit as much with the latest and greatest hardware as much as Windows does. And now with Snow Leopard (10.6) it runs even faster and better now.

As for EFI-x I wouldn't waste your time with it. Almost all of the people that bought the thing are having all sorts of problems with the units dying. I bought one about 9 months ago, it worked for 3 months and died. I went back to using the Chameleon boot loader and some kext files and I have not had any major problems since. I used mine everyday and it works just as good as any real Mac.

I hate my macbook pro. It is very high res and all the fonts that can't be preference changed and macmail are tiny. Move and copy are unnecessarily difficult. The leading edge, where you keep your arms as you type are sharp and the lip to open, even sharper. The computer locks up constantly with the beachball spinning for as much as two minutes and the nonsense about an 8 hour battery is more like three even with everything turned off except email.

I wish I hadn't spent $3000+ on this computer. Support is available, but the folks on the phone can't even tell me how to move my address book from outlook express to the mac address book with the names included. I feel like I work on a brain damaged computer.

You won't hear this sort of thing often, but it's all true. If anyone has ideas on how to fix the fonts issue without changing the resolution, I am all ears. Keep in mind, I did use all the preferences options...there are still many places where the font is tiny, especially in finder and search windows.

Thank you all for the replies.

I was "almost" decided on waiting until the Q1 2010. And today, i'm 100% sure i will wait.

i "don't neeeeed" a MBP that fast ... and i'm going to be honest ... i don't need a macbook pro At All! I need a Mac OSX ... i work in interface design and there are so many tools in Mac OS that would make my day to day life so much better smile.gif

That's what really pisses me off ... i really don't need a 2300USD MBP ... i just need the freaking MACOS ... the problem is, to get the MACOS problem free ... i need a mac ... and to buy a mac, i must get a machine that will run photoshop, illustrator, Indesign, Aftereffects, Cinema 4D ...

So ... i need some good specs ... and that costs a lot of money ... i just can't feel good with myself buying a laptop that costs that much ... i think people should stop and think for a second ... 2300USD ... that's a lot of money ... and the problem is that i'm from Portugal > Europe ... here the MBP costs 2300EUROS ... so, i guess, its something like, 3390USD!

Oh well, sorry... i'm talking and talking ... it's the way i fell for sometime now ... frustrated with 2300USD meaning so much to me ... ( if i was wealthy ... it was peanuts i guess ) ... and the fact that it's not the MBP that really takes my attention ... it's the MacOS .... so, in the end, i will pay 3k USD for a MacOS ...eheheh

Oh WEll

Dude don't get EFI-X it's a waste of money! You can get Snow Leopard working on your system. Check here.
