It seems like all the hardware lists I find are for old hardware. It seems like this should all work, though I haven't found a thread anywhere that didn't list problems, and certainly not a vanilla install. I read this thread - http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...176155&st=0 and it seems to have a lot of good info.

If you have seen a report somewhere of someone getting this working perfectly, please let me know. I need a new PC, if I can get this to run OS X that's even better. (I do most of my work in OS X, but some of it requires Windows.) Thanks.

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD4 (one of the cheaper boards with Firewire, plus it has 12 phase power)
Video card: MSI N250GTS-2D512-OCv2 GeForce GTS 250 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 (has a good cooler.)
Proc: Intel Core i5 750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz LGA 1156 (don't feel like spending an extra $100 to get a slower processor like the life hacker example.)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) (will upgrade later)

For the mobo I've seen a couple reports of those working. For the video card, it seems like ATi offers better bang for the buck right now, but I also can't seem to find much in the way of reports on latest cards. Even still, I can't find an ATi card with a decent (eg quiet but good) cooler.

I would prefer not to have to run a custom kernel, but it seems like that's not going to be possible with this build, at least for the time being.

I have an x25 Intel SSD I'm going to use to boot from, then probably a 320GB SATAII drive for files.

best of luck to you. i want to do the same thing because all the builds on here are "safe" and old stuff and the few people who have built the p55's are smashing their faces into their desks trying to get them to work.

from what i've heard from a guy who built one on youtube....he can't get anything right with the graphics. he said its not even worth it due to the frustration of graphical problems. HOWEVER, some genius Koreans got it working on another site i've heard. there's a translated walkthrough on here and a guy even tried it but so far, no luck....

i want to know how it turns out because i'd rather not have a computer than have a regular PC again. windows, no matter how much you deck your computer out with the best gear, is the worse OS i've ever used (and i'm a video editor, once die hard PC guy).

i do however really like your hardware choice. your psu and ram choices are awesome and it looks like you've been reading or talking to right guys on here.

I have to thank a good friend who knows PCs very well for helping me with my choices. I combined that with what I read here and elsewhere.

I need a new PC as much as I need a new Mac. Since I game a lot, a Mac Pro isn't really worth it. So the worst case scenario is this is my main PC (VS.NET, virtual test machines, pc games...) and I figure something else out for a Mac upgrade.

On a side note, I'll probably change the RAM to G.SKILL Trident 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 as there's a bundle deal on NE which saves me an extra $15 - and it's better RAM.

If I get it running OS X, I'll bump it up to 8GB if not more RAM.

I'd pick an 8800 or 9800 video card for compatibility, but since I plan to game I need to get the 2xx running at some point.

I'm going to try a similar build.

I just ordered my parts today. I waited until after the weekend since stuff wasn't going to be shipped then anyway, and a guy I know got me wholesale pricing.

I'm updating my original post as things changed a tiny bit.

It's assembled and running. So far the only issue I've had is some slow network performance, though I can't be sure that was this machine. And I'm running into that issue where it sometimes hangs on reboot.

But I've also got to get work done, so not a ton of testing yet. I've got Photoshop installed and am using this machine to get work done.

I did get Windows on it first and ran some tests. I maxed out the CPU (all four cores), the GPU and 3.5GB of RAM running some stress tests. The highest power draw it had was 220W. I even cranked the fans all the way up.

I'm interested in what method you used to install on the P55 board? I have a MSI P55-GD65 and every method I tried causes an infinite reboot loop.

I use iDeneb. There is a mention, I think in the p55 thread, that the MSI p55 board is a no-go.

Thanks for the info on your install. I couldn't get iDeneb to install either. I decided to go with an X58 setup and it was a much easier go at it. Thanks again.

Well, if you go X58 then you need to buy a new processor too. You could get another p55 board (eg gigabyte) and save a few bucks.

Hi! I'm curious about your success wit P55 mobo.

Its much cheaper alternative to the i7 processors solutions, but better than LGA775 or LGA771 solutions.

Witch iDeneb you used? Why didn't tried the snow leopard USB retail install with DSDT patch?

All hardware which is working with efi-x should work too with patched boot loader and DSDT patch.

Seemed like people were posting better results with iDeneb. Plus I'm no expert.

I looked at that before I bought. They didn't have any newer hardware on there. I see they now list the i5, but don't list any mobos for it.

Thus far I seem to be geekbenching lower than others, so my exact software config may not be correct. I'm trying to figure out a good install pattern so I can easily do multiple installs.

What issue are you running into? Dual booting is a little tricky, IMHO. First thing I would do is pull the Windows drive. Just put one in for OS X and deal with dual booting after you get the system running.

Boot from the iDeneb disc, when it says hit F8 to enter commands, do that. enter busratio=20 -v
