Atmosfear
Hi,

just wanted to notice you, that you should be able to get proper Composite or S-Video TV-Out using Apples DVI to Video Adapter sold for about 20 EUR. The adapter says "requires Mac mini or Power Mac G5" but it works fine on my MacBook Pro 17" aswell as my 10.4.8 Hackintosh w/Natit Radeon X1900 XT.

The adapter is detected as second monitor "NTSC/PAL" and offers these interlaced Resolutions in both PAL and NTSC-Refreshrates:

640x480 VGA
720x480 4:3 SD NTSC
720x576 4:3 SD PAL
768x576 Square-Pixel SD PAL
800x600 SVGA
856x480 16:9 SD NTSC
1024x576 16:9 SD PAL
1024x768 XGA
1280x720 HD 720p

I suspect this will also work fine with Dual-Screen capable Nvidia cards using Natit and also with GMA900/950 if a PCIe DVI-Connector-Card is installed.

The output quality is pretty good and I'll be using it as control monitor out for Final Cut Pro HD (or for watching movies ;-)).

Although my device is labled for PAL it supports NTSC as well, I guess it just uses PAL as default when used as bootup screen.

Edit: Seems not to work with Nvidia Cards for now ...

Have Fun,
Atmos

Cool. Thanks for the info!
Anyone else try it?

I have but I have an ATI X1600 Pro so I cant get dual dispaly to work I get mirroring but not dual display

Great news! thumbsup_anim.gif

I think I need to get one of those to try this out biggrin.gif (To bad it is such a expensive cable, but I wouldn't hurt to give apple some support pirate2.gif )
Atmosfear
Well it's not just the cable, it inlcudes the electronics and logic to convert from DVI signal to analog out, so I think the price is quite ok.
ooZberg
Got myself one of those cables in the local apple store today, and now, FINALLY, tv-out works like a charm biggrin.gif

(However, ntsc dident work at all, pal works just great, but when I tried ntsc the system just freezes, and i had to remove com.apple.windowserver.plist to get my system running again, weird..)

And I also want to say, thank you Atmosfear for this tip biggrin.gif

I can only find a miniDVI cable to tvout, is there another one?
ooZberg
Yes, this one http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/uk...LearnMore=M9267

Has anyone tried this with an NVidia dual-dvi (or other) capable card????
japhex
Can someone try dvi+this adapter and check for dual screen
skippyretard
The topic should be changed to "TV Out-Alternative" as it is not a solution for the mentioned cards. This can be very confusing to people.
tomtefar
Plus that Apple's site only mentions using the device together with ATI cards... do we know that it works with NViDIA cards???
Atmosfear
@skippyretard: ching the topic would make it much unfriendlier for searching (IMHO)

@tomtefar: AFAIK this Device is advertised for G5 Mac and Mac Mini (the Mini-DVI-version), with the first having NVIDIA card and the latter one GMA950 (at least the intel mini). As the device even works in windows, I dought it's hardware specific, as long as the card supports the needed graphics modes.
tomtefar
This seems to indicate otherwise???

Anyone actually try it with an NVIDIA card? Which one??
tomtefar
I've got confirmation from a local Mac store (where they did try it) that the adaptor does not work with the 7300GT in the Mac Pro. Anyone tried on a hack with NVIDIA??

Hello, i've buyed a DVI -> Svideo adapter and tried with my geforce and no lucky.

I have a Geforce 6600GT PCIx... product id 0x0140 has 2 DVI port and one TV-OUT my firse monitor is connected through a DVI -> VGA adapter working, but the SVIDEO adapter is not working... I've tried all the Natit drivers with no success... still got 'no monitor connected' on the monitors info...

In windows XP using the adapter the geforce driver recognize it as a 'PAL/NTSC Monitor' but can't display correctly... appears as a timing problem...

anyone has some ideas?

Many thanks in advance!

Apple DVI-PAL adapter worked fine for me too smile.gif
with my asus x1900xt

Interesting. Anyone know of any successes using either GMA900 or ATI X1800 ?
munky
Well, I just ordered one.... wink.gif

And received it. Works great with my MBP. However, I rather stupidly forgot my hackintosh doesnt have DVI, only a VGA port.

I have now ordered a DVI-I to VGA adapter (supposedly to use a monitor which has DVI-I only ports with a VGA output). This should, in theory, work, because (presumably) the Apple DVI to Video adapter only uses the analog pins. I really hope it does... :S

Will keep you all posted.
MrBryan
I just want to point out that this will only work for certain Radeon cards such as the x1900xt.

The part from Apple is not a converter, it merely activates a switch on the cards to use the pin-outs. On normal DVI outs you'll get garbled crap, as I did with my x1600xt.

And that x1600xt has a great s-video out that doesn't work at all with OSX (as far as I know...)

Boo-urns.

Don't waste your $30.

Speaking of which, anyone want to by an Apple MiniDV/DVI to NTSC/PAL?
Panik
nVidia 7900 GTO

I have dual DVI working with Natit Dual 0.02
Internal s-video does NOT work

I purchased one of these adapters and tried it with the dual DVI.

No luck.

The problem I suspect is that some cards only produce DVI-I signals therefore getting a DVI-A is near impossible.

If anyone has this working I would love to know

Works great. advanced options as overscan compensation for full 4:3 image.

I've got gma 945 , got the cable but it wasn't working...

Anyone tried this with an x1800 XT?

ok... i have just built a new computer on the p5k-e motherboard with a 2.2 dual core processor and 4gb ram, for graphics i use the geforce 7300gt and my old fx5200 card. Everything workes fine with vanilla kernel and 10.5.2 update but something strange is happening when i try to get the s-video to work. i acctually got it to work in mirror mode with changeable resolution on both my tv and my monitor but when i restart or try to start up with the s-video cord plugged in it all goes bananas!
than i have to remove NVinject witch i used and reinstall the whole thing.. very strange i think.. any1 have any ideas? plz help!

knytet:

Hi I have a P5K and I have a PCI-E 7800 GTX 512, the same thing happens to me!

I can get TV out by plugging in the s-video plug AFTER starting the osx86, I then have to unplug my monitor, and that forces a picture to my TV, I then plug the monitor back in to the opposite DVI port than before and it works, but as you said it goes mad when I restart.

I'm close to buying some DVI and s-video extension cables so I can do this hacky cable madness without groveling around on the floor, selotape them to the side of my desk or something!

I've tried changing around with my info.plist and I get more or less the same thing happen. (plug tv cable in after, change monitor cable aroun, etc etc. 13 0C works best for me. and yields the results mentioned above. Weird.

Any ideas on why this is?
doobiebro
I wish i had read this topic earlier.

my mediacentre has a GMA 915, and an Asus 7300GS. Native TV-out gave kernel panics so I bought a DVI to S-video converter at the apple store but it doesn't work. I see the bios screen (garbled) and when it should display the apple boot screen it just gives black screen. my video preferences look like this.

and the about window says this:

As you can see I cannot switch to PAL/50Hz display. Resolution switching works but it just doesn't give ou tput to the TV, i can control the computer with screensharing so I know the computer hasn't crashed.
Krazubu
@ doobiebro : I think it needs the NVCAP to be edited so that you tell the driver to ouptut TV format to the desired chanel
Uncle Leo
still no solution for s-video tv out on tiger or leopard?

I've a GMA 950 on my laptop. OS X starts booting but stalls at blue screen after apple's logo.

hey folks,

does any ATI X1900 XT card work with the dvi to svideo adapter or only special editions only for mac?

greetings
richrard
somebody said that that a switch is activated to change the signal output on ati cards to set it to s-video, which is why it doesnt work with nvidia, but isnt s-video just analog?

if thats the case cant i just use my dvi to vga thing that came with my card, and pick up one of those vga to s-video cables ive seen floating around the internet for $1.99, or would the signal be off? or if dvi-i to s-video doesnt work, would dvi to vga not work under osx? i havent had to use it since my windows only days...
weaksauce12
Has anyone tried this on a 2600XT? Apple says it's compatible, I want to be sure before dropping $70 on a card and another $20 on the adapter...
Roal2488
hi guys!
Is there any way to make the s-video out port work? i have one on my laptop. I have intel x3100 graphics btw.
Thanks!
