Full Version: upgrading from 10.5.2 to 10.5.8 panic

As the title says... every time i try to upgrade/update from 10.5.2 (kalyway) to 10.5.8 (through the apple update), I get a kernal panic around 14% when "writing files" and then am no longer able to boot...

-Background-

I only need OSx for school (video), so i run it on an external USB 500 gig HD. I stopped using it over the summer and now i need OSx again (for school)... But when i tried to boot from it i was not able to... I figured it was because i updated my biose and added/changed a few things on/in my comp since last running it... But when it ran it ran AWESOME, i was able to get ALL the update, EVERYTHING worked..

-Where I am now-

So i figured i would just wipe the drive and start over.. ALTHOUGH i gave the DVD to a friend who no longer has it... So i was unable to find/remember the EXACT version i was running before.. SO SO SO I just downloaded Kalyway 10.5.2 and installed and seem to have a majority of things working EXCEPT being able to update to 10.5.8... But what i don't know is if 10.5.8 was even out when i was running it... if it WAS OUT then i know FOR SURE i AM able to run it... If it was not... then i need to know IF I EVEN CAN run it...

-So, my question....-

Do any know WHY or what i need to do to upgrade?

-My Set Up-
CPU: AMD X64 6000+ (dual core 3.0)
MOBO: Gigabyte Ga-Ma69gm-s2h
RAM: 4G of DDR2 OCZ
GPU: nVidia 8800gt 512 (EVGA)
HDD: 500 gig USB external device.

EDIT: I feel as though i included enough info, but if i have left ANYTHING out, leme know!
-Thanks again!

Doing some MORE! researching, i found out the 1.5.8 was released August 5 1009.
So i don't believe i was running this version last summer (So i don't even know if i can run it). Does anyone know/how would i find out...

Also, I think the next thing i am going to try are incremental updates... because you can download them one at a time.. (would you suggest this or no?)

-Thanks!

The thing is.... when ever i TRY to upgrade; it crashes around 14% DURING the install...

So i am unable to finish the install and then run what your suggested...

Also... I downloaded the 10.5.3 update to try and update form 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 and i even crash during that...

I am thinking about fallowing one of the snow leopard install tutorials but am not sure if i need 10.5.8 running in order to do it.. (I wonder if it will work from 10.5.2).

So basically i have NO idea what to do next...

ANY HELP is appreciated!!

-Thanks

Anyone.....

the only thing (not coming from an expert) that i can see is that you're using a Kalaway install. If you were to use a retail install with let's say a boot-132 method, then you'd be able to upgrade fine. I think you need to change your install method. Follow either weaksauce's guide or BlackOsx's guide. You can find them if you search.

Thanks for the reply!

But i did stumble across those guides, but from what i read and understood. Is that, you only want to do a retail install IF your running on an Intel. So all the AMD people are outa luck with the retail install...

But if im wrong PLEASE PLEASE let me know... becuase then i will try those.

-Thanks again!
