Full Version: Security on a Hackintosh
InsanelyMac Forum > Apple World > OS X > OS X Snow Leopard (10.6)

I am completely new to this forum and to the hackintosh community. However, I was wondering if building and using a hackintosh would be a worthy pursuit for a user interested in information security and protecting their data from security risks. I am a longtime Windows user, mostly with XP, have dabbled in Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, but am somewhat restricted as to the third-party software I must use for work--and have never used a Mac before. Most of the software I use is compatible/intended for Windows or Mac use only, and often times has little or no Linux functionality. Has anyone out there made the switch from using Windows to a hackintosh specifically for security purposes? NOTE: I am specifically referring to those who switched from XP. I am not interested in Vista, and Windows 7 is still probably too new for a switch to have happened anyway.

Well...

I like to keep things short to the point that it hurts.

Windows (ANY!!!) = viruses, trojans, backdoors, malware, spyware, etc. etc. etc...

Only god knows why MS tried to make coding simpler and their software so vulnerable to petty 20 lines of codes.

Mac OS X = peace and tranquility.

I switched using mac since 2005 since hackintosh began on Intel processors... this being a hobby...

Tried out how well it works with just using a Personal computer for recreation and entertainment apart from 70% of the time getting work done.

Now I am not a guy who writes lines of code = neither for Windows nor for Mac.

So my "PC" (personal computing) requirements are easily met by this great Apple product.

Lastly, I always used Norton AV on mac to get rid of Windows "germicical infectious tendencies".

And Bang! Mac to the Rescue!

Moreover, I just tried the Snow Leopard; It works flawlessly.

You may give it a shot. It's the best Desktop Operating System, you bet...!

As it is UNIX based you can also use it for mid-range server purposes, firewalls, file servers, print servers, etc.

You can also go for the server flavors if your requirements are higher.
Or even Dual Boot with several Linux Distros tailored specifically for Apple Hardware.

Well.. gotta sign off.. Hope that solves your query. PM or post to know more.

I also am not a coder, but I am curious as the the "20 lines of code." Is this in reference to something specific? I feel like I am missing something here?

Welll...... Just after a long time

Oh that ..... was a simple rather ironical reference to the usual 20 or so lines of code from which most virus or worms out there are written ...
using VB code or VC++ code...

That's it... nothing much......!!!

So don't bother.... it was a humorous attempt at making a mockery out of the wasted efforts of MICROSOFT

and EVEN MUCH MORE ... troubling is the fact that millions..... rather ZILLIONS of USERS out there in the world,

who are forced to use MICROSOFT wacko.gif censored2.gif blink.gif unsure.gif rolleyes.gif crazy product instead of the much superior Apple Operating System,

usually waste so many hours in installing-configuring, RE-INSTALLING..RE-CONFIGURING...

their favorite applications... programs.. just because virus and worms and other things infect any WINDOWS Operating System almost instantaneously....wacko.gif censored2.gif blink.gif unsure.gif rolleyes.gif

Or whatever.....!!! Sheeeesh.........!!!! wacko.gif censored2.gif blink.gif unsure.gif rolleyes.gif

Last Thing I would like to say is that When I tried Windows Seven 64-bit... it takes up about 17GB of Disk Space

Even Norton 2010.... has improved a lot since the buggy and sluggishly slow Norton 2009

But not Windows..... Well... With Snow Leopard which doesn't take up more than 6GB of disk space at maximum.....

And gives so much more..

The best thing I loved was the voice commands that get things done....

Coz I suffer some sleep.gif genetic disability .... hence.... there are days that I need the microphone to work and get work done..

That's it....

I WISH and HOPE other read this and so Does wacko.gif APPLE INC. unsure.gif and makes future MAC OS X releases....

available for generic computers..... so that others can save a lot of time and be more human that robotic in

installing-reinstalling .... installing-reinstalling .... installing-reinstalling .... installing-reinstalling ....

Till next Time...

a lot of os x's protection is security through obscurity. but it certainly gets the job done. you can always run vm as well, as you can under linux.

just what do you mean by 'information security'?

Forced only because apple refuses to sell at a competitive price point.
