It's not in September as previously announced, but maybe a little better. The devs at Apple have pulled through for an early launch of their latest creation, Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6).

With the worldwide downtime of the Apple Store this morning Apple added a pre-order page for 10.6 with the delivery date set for August 28th. The single user pack is available for $29 while the family pack (5-users) is priced at $49.

Said to be the next great step in enhancing your Mac experience, this next version of OS X comes with the latest version of Safari 4, out-of-the-box Exchange support and Apple's next generation media player, Quick Time X. Among the next generation technologies Apple has included 64-bit support, Grand Central Dispatch and the technology to "unleash the power of graphics processors", OpenCL.

Included in the box for this release includes the normal installation DVD (you would hope so eh) and documentation. In your box Apple is requiring 1GB of RAM and 5GB of free disk space. Also rumored to be required is an Mac computer with Intel processor, but we shall see about that!

I will going to stay with Leopard, because I have been reading OSX86 SL users and looks more difficult than Leopard to configure a stable system with QE & CI. I will stay with Leopard and maybe in the future I will just buy an Apple system with SL installed or buy it separately SL and an used Apple computer.

I wouldnt mind running SL on my Hack but will stay with Leopard for now until I am 100% convinced SL will run on my system flawlessly

Isnt difficult at all m8 its as easy as leopard

On the contrary m8, its far easier to install once you got the right method, requires less modding (kexts and the lot) and runs a lot faster (64bit)

Does anyone know if the retail disc that Apple will sell of SL require Leopard Install disc? Because it is suppose to be an upgrade retail disc.

Not sure but i wouldnt think so as the pos retail 10a432 is 6.13 gigs bit large for an upgrade i think

Apple has changed it's position on 64-bit.

I'm running the retail now and 64-bit is NOT default, in fact its bad enough that Snow Leopard contains a 32-bit kernel.

They said that 10.6 would be 100% 64-bit and it's not.

If you can't even support 64-bit on my brand new MacBook Pro 13" then there is no hope.

in Xserve onLY with more than 32GB of ram. So if you need more than 6 or 8 GB of ram, you need the server OS.

it doesn't look like the menu bar is transparent anymore according to the screen shots . I like the transparency.

it's easy enough to enable 64-bit; holding the 6 + 4 down while booting, or adding args=x86_64 to your boot.plist does the trick. They probably didn't enable it by default because of all the conflicts with 3rd party apps. My guess is after the 3rd party apps have a chance to update and such they will release an update to enable 64-bit by default. But who knows, we'll just have to wait and see.

I bought it, don´t know anything about programming so I guess I´ll be back with lots of questions. But if it´s as easy to install as someone said here guess I´ll be back in no time with my first Snow Leo post Good luck to us all.

4890 running fine here Not sure about 3850, but there's also a 4850 silent from gigabyte for example, if some money is in the piggybank.

oh, oh. there have been people who thought that 128kb will be enough for everyone. no one can tell how much we can use (need ) in the next 2 or 3 years. at the moment i have the problem that the software i'm (we) are using won't take advanteg of my 8gb ram, parallels won't configure over 1,5gb i could easylie profit from more, eye tv won't do time shift with over 1,5gb (timeshift for only about 30min is a joke). itunes usually takes up around 1gb. add all this up and 8gb would be gone and you are back to using hard disk space as cache.

if it's the case hat x64 won't bring other advantages then more then 32gb, i really don't need it else it's infact a let down

The world's most advanced OS? Good joke! Point is, that Apple still has no support for playing BluRay's and editing HD content is much more complicated if you compare it to MS Vista, where you work with the content from the camera and burn it w/o the need of converting the content.

Without a proper solution for HD content, Apple doesn't provide with SL the most advanced OS from my point of view.

It works but needs better kernel. Currently available kernels are actually patched original binaries, not built from sources. Now when source is available someone will make stable kernel for unsupported CPUs with on-the-fly cpuid patching and 64-bit support I hope.

Grr snow leopards bootcamp is giving me problems installing vista!!!

I have no problems with the drivers.

However few programs required Vista Compatibility Mode to install or run. But it worked at the end. :-)

if nothing changes in 64bit kernel support people will be using 32bit anyway. vmware fusion tells me to boot up 32it kernel, tempmonitor don't show tempretures, parallels hangs. i'm forced to use 32bit by software i need

From what I hear it's totally worth the price, but I'm waiting until all the inevitable kinks are worked out.

I'm running it on 64bit and had no problems with any applications, so far. It is a lot faster then leo, IMO. At least Finder and Safari. And I think there is some improvements in graphics too, or maybe is just me being overenthusiastic after successful instalation
